To ask if you’d eat this food?

I’ve had a supermarket delivery this morning and within it ordered a salad type pot with grains in it. It had split all over the bag, and contents of the bag. I have notified the company but not sure if it’s safe to eat the other food? There was a pot of hummus and some fruit and there are grains of salad under the lid, and basically everywhere!

WWYD?

I wouldn't eat it.

Doggymummar · 02/03/2025 10:38

I would rinse everything under the tap, dry it and put it away and eat as normal.n

Changingplace · 02/03/2025 10:39

Yeah I’d just rinse/brush off the bits that were on the other items, I have no idea why that would be an issue?

I wouldn't eat it.

Why?

Sportacus17 · 02/03/2025 10:39

Yes - I’d rinse everything and then not think about it further.

onlineshoppingdelivery · 02/03/2025 10:43

I’m not sure what use it is to rinse stuff, then it’ll just go soggy? We had some pizzas in there too, which are covered in it and would be awkward to rinse

Why?

Oh, I meant I wouldn't eat the food that had spilled. I'd eat the other food.

SausageRoll2020 · 02/03/2025 10:44

You should get a refund on the salad as the packaging was damaged, but there is nothing wrong with the rest of the items.
Something has a seed or grain on it, so what? Just brush it off and carry on with your day.

Why on earth do you think it wouldn't be safe? You realise fruit is generally grown outside and will have likely had rain / birds / bugs etc on or nearby whilst growing.

FionnulaTheCooler · 02/03/2025 10:45

It's salad, not raw chicken juices. I'd wipe the spilled bits off the other food and put it away as normal. Obviously I wouldn't eat the burst salad and would be expecting a refund for that.

Pizzas are packaged, so there's a seed on the packaging, why is this a problem?

Surely if you're this anal you'll rinse fruit etc before eating it anyway....

Just brush it off?

B1indEye · 02/03/2025 10:47

Pizzas not in any kind of wrapping?

Just brush off the spilt stuff and crack on. Or do what you would have done if the internet didn't exist

CocoapuffPuff · 02/03/2025 10:47

Get rid of the broken product and ask for a refund. Brush the grains etc off everything else, wipe any dressing off with a cloth, dry and then store in the fridge as normal and stop being silly.

Kaminari · 02/03/2025 10:49

I have quite severe contamination OCD and it wouldn't occur to me not to just brush it off the packaging of the other things it's landed on? Unless the food it's landed on was completely unpackaged for whatever reason, in which case I'd struggle with it anyway. But presumably the pizza was wrapped/boxed?!

Why do you need to rinse it? Just wipe it off? Pizzas are packaged so it's not like there's a contamination risk.

Me too. Assume most food is packaged, and if not is fresh produce that can be washed.
If grains and salad got on fresh bread and made it soggy, then I'd want that replaced. If it was just a few grains, I'd brush them off and think nothing of it.

FacingTheWall · 02/03/2025 10:52

Grains aren’t going to ‘contaminate’ anything in this context. Brush them off and eat the other products.

gamerchick · 02/03/2025 10:53

Assuming you were going to eat the salad and not pick out the seeds. Just give them a wipe and carry on as normal.

FondantFancyFan · 02/03/2025 10:55

Just chuck the damaged cardboard packaging away, clean up & eat the other food.

ChiliFiend · 02/03/2025 11:12

I stress a lot about food contamination and this wouldn't bother me at all (from a food contamination perspective; obviously it's highly annoying from a life admin perspective!). Pizzas, hummus etc will be in packaging, so brush it off; rinse off anything that isn't in packaging.

What do you need to rinse?
If the grains are on cardboard packaging they are not going to affect the food inside. Same with anything tinned. Brush them off.
If they're on plastic containers like milk bottles or yogurt pots, rinse them under the tap. If they're on fresh fruit/veg, rinse them off.

If the outer packaging for something is soggy then bin it. You can write the cooking instructions on a bit of paper and tape it to the inner packaging.
