To ask for help for ND son re interview

SlinkiMalinki23 · 01/03/2025 18:22

18 yr old son is going for a bar job in a leisure centre. Bit of background - he's very tall, a goth, and ADHD, probably ASD too. He's desperate for a job, has applied for millions but never gets anywhere. He made it through a first round - group activity sort of thing. He now has a face to face interview. Any tips? He needs this. He has no bar experience but very willing to learn. Has confidence but can also be a bit black and white. I'm worried they will prefer someone more clean cut/mainstream.

Tone down the presentation and make sure he shakes hands/smiles.

Lots of practice interviews with friends and family

Meecrowahvey · 01/03/2025 18:41

He's not planning to turn up in goth attire, is he?

Soggydog · 01/03/2025 18:49

Reasonable adjustments are allowed for interviews which can include things such as seeing the questions in advance or for the actual interview itself. Worth reading up around what he can ask for. Ensuring he allows time to process what he has been asked and formulate his words is important so suggest he takes a slow breath before answering to allow himself that time can be good.

Well he has long dyed black hair, a nose piercing and only wears black, but otherwise not outlandish.
I wondered what questions they might ask oh someone young with no experience?

I know that u can do this but I wondered if it might disadvantage him for a casual role. I know it shouldn't but we all live in the real world where someone without requirements is the easier hire

Script script script. Ask ChatGPT to make a list of interview questions for a generic bar job (or whatever) and have him come up with appropriate answers and practice them.

Jade520 · 01/03/2025 20:05

It can be really tough getting through interviews when you're ND but if previously he never got anywhere and now he's got through the group activity then remind him that that's progress - and that the group activity can be a real struggle for ND people so he's done well to get through that.

Here's a list of questions that might give him some idea about what could be asked, Some might be irrelevant and the answers might be rubbish but it will give him some things to think about anyway. Feeling prepared can really help with confidence. I definitely agree with getting him to practise, he could record himself on his laptop answering questions and watch himself back and he could practise with you and you give him some tips.

They can't be completely against his look or he wouldn't have got through the first round.

Google online for typical interview questions, and practice, practice, practice.

He should turn up neat and tidy. Wearing black and being a goth isn’t a problem, but he should turn up neat and tidy.

Can he give examples of where he has been mixing with people? Used his initiatives? Used customer service etc?

Maybe tie his hair back neatly, as he should do in a food/drink environment? Perhaps research some drinks, check out beforehand what the bar serves, has he read the job description fully, so he can answer questions confidently.

stichguru · 01/03/2025 20:32

I would advise he tells them about his disability beforehand. I am disabled and I always think that some of the things I do look strange if you don't understand why I do them. They should also be able to make reasonable adjustments in the interview if they know, like give him a little longer to answer questions.

NewbieSM · 01/03/2025 22:26

Make sure he is wearing a smart shirt and pants black is fine, most bar staff wear all black anyway. Hair is brushed and neatly tied back. Eye contact, smiles and handshakes are important if he will be working in a customer facing role. Maybe google some common interview questions and role play with him to practice? Write down some key phrases for him to use. I would also tell them about his neurodiversity this should not be a barrier to get a role behind the bar if he is confident and keen to learn. Good luck to him, I hope he gets the job Smile

When I was this 16 and getting a part time job so no experience yet, they asked me stuff like did I like school, was I punctual, stuff like that. They might also ask him questions around talking to people, working as a team, taking initiative. They might give him some scenarios and ask what he’d do. Like I remember being asked what I would do if a customer couldn’t find a certain product. Quite basic stuff. If he’s passed the group stage that’s great!
