19 month old son only saying mama and babbling

Hi I’m wondering if anyone could give me some advice. My son has not long turned 19 months old. He only really says mama baba dada, and babbles a lot of gibberish. He hums what I think sounds like round and round. He copy’s ms Rachael’s dances (up and down) round & round etc. he answers to his name most of the time but I have to say his name and say look, then I will more grab his attention. He looks to where I point. He points if he see’s something he wants or something that grabs his interest. He understands a lot of what we say for example I could say where’s Elmo he will look at Elmo or if I say give Elmo a kiss he will do it, and the same with his other toys. He gives me kisses sometimes but not all the time. He waves sometimes but not on que. Claps and overall understands a lot of what we say, he grunts for no like if I say mummy’s going to change your nappy he knows what I mean and grunts. Or if he’s at Granny’s house and I say let’s go home not he’ll grunt or moan or even cry! He loves his grandparents but can be very shy and turns his head a closes his eyes around new people. He also lifts his arms and wants held from people he’s familiar with. He’s been walking since 11 months but he was late with the babbling and clapping. Just looking for some advise as I’m worried he’s not got any proper words yet. He loves his toys he does like spinning toys but I wouldn’t say he’s obsessed

Do you have a health visitor or local children’s health team? Perhaps ask them for an assessment? This might put your mind at ease.

Yeah I phoned my health visitor and she doesn’t think I have anything to worry about and to focus on what he is doing and to read to him. I’ve been guilty of not taking him to baby or toddler classes and I feel so bad

That sounds sensible. It’s really hard when they are so young, all children do things at different rates.

They won't do much about speech until 2 or 3, I can't remember which - sorry! But I had concerns about both my children were late to speak. I'd really recommend getting speech and language help as soon as it's available though, as it really makes a huge difference. Not sure if this is what you are worried about but one child is autistic and one isn't. But my autistic child had other symptoms by 19 months such as rigid thinking and meltdowns.

My son didn't really take until about 20 months, then he suddenly picked it up. He's now 6 and very articulate. He's also autistic - is this something your worried about? It doesn't sound like your son has any of the early "warning signs" (as far as I remember them) - my son didn't really babble or point and was lining things up extensively at that age.

(I should also mention that my son is an empathetic, affectionate little boy with lots of friends who has defied my expectations of what autism looks like!)

They start to put together three word sentences about 2.5ish….. more milk mummy or give me Teddy etc. Both of mine have a stammer ( runs in family) so I was looking out for speech issues really early on - 19 months is still young - go back to the health visitor if you feel anxious but bear in mind that most of the time it’s nothing serious.

If your health visitor who has met your child can't reassure you then random strangers on the internet won't either, I would just keep doing everything you can and check in again with your health visitor of you have further worries
