What is an opinion?

We are supposed to be going out tonight to a do, nothing heavy just a local club for drinks and a meet with newish friends. When I reminded him of this just now, he said "Oh no, I had forgotten about that! God!" I replied, Oh it'll be fun, we haven't been out out for ages! (We haven't been out out on a Saturday since last year)

He then said. "Yes we have - don't start. It's my opinion, I'm allowed to have one" I said, "That it's not an opinion, if its factually not true."

AIBU?

It led me to believe, what an opinion actually is? And, whether I'm right or he's right?

Do you always bicker like this?

BettyButtersBatter · 01/03/2025 16:39

This is a new thing!

Have you tried looking it up on the internet?

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 01/03/2025 16:41

I think defining ‘ages’ and / or what constitutes as going out would be an opinion.

if you haven’t been out since last October for example, that might be ages for you, but not for him. You’re thinking about going out as a Saturday night thing, he might be thinking you went out for a pub Sunday lunch or saw a film midweek recently (for example).

NovemberMorn · 01/03/2025 16:41

Maybe his take on what a night out is ,is different to yours.
In that case, you both have an opinion and you are both right.😀

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 01/03/2025 16:42

(But his response sounds a bit arsey though)

I agree. I hate it when people say 'Don't start'.
It usually means they have had their say... but don't want to hear yours.

KrisAkabusi · 01/03/2025 16:48

You said "we haven't been out in ages", but you're thinking "we haven't been out on a Saturday since october". By mentally adding the Saturday, you're moving the goalposts - you might have gone out every Sunday. Also 'ages' is subjective. So in this case, yes I think he's entitled to consider this an opinion.

JLou08 · 01/03/2025 16:49

"It will be fun" is your opinion.
"Ages" is subjective.

Coconutter24 · 01/03/2025 16:50

I think in this case his opinion is it won’t be fun and doesn’t want to go

YourEagerBiscuit · 01/03/2025 16:51

The 'don't start' would be unacceptable for me.

It seems it's a tactic men use to shit women down by saying it's their opinion on something and you aren't letting them have it etc..

In terms if what an opinion is, and if this is an opinion. I think this is something where there's facts and your individual views on them. So the frequency of nights out is factually a thing for example you last went out on a Saturday 10 months ago. But then expectations and preferences dictate if you see this as ages ago or not in your opinion. As there's no standard definition of what counts as ages between nights out.

The fact he came back at you like a petulant child makes me think there are poss bigger issues than what counts as an opinion.

Agree, sounds like he’s grumpy/wants to start an argument because he wants to stay in.

AcquadiP · 01/03/2025 16:55

He's speaking "his truth". Does it make it factually accurate? No. I'd just quote the late Queen:
"while some recollections may vary..."😂

MrsSkylerWhite · 01/03/2025 16:55

A person’s take on any particular issue. Which can be wrong: see Nigel Farage, for example.

GreyCarpet · 01/03/2025 17:01

We haven't been out for ages is a subjective statement not factual. It comes down to semantics.

People will have differing opinions on what constitutes going out out; the duration of 'ages'; and whether nights out on different days of the week count.

"We haven't been out on a Satirday since last year" might be a factual statement, but that isn't what you said.

Anyway, it's a pointless argument, and it's going nowhere. Go out or don't go out. Go out with him or go out alone. Don't waste time arguing over semantics.

I don’t really get what his opinions was.

But opinions are subjective viewpoints and an opinion based in untruth isn’t valid as an argument against a fact

Cucy · 01/03/2025 18:45

Not sure why my post was deleted.
It wasn’t offensive in any way.

I assume some people don’t like not being right.

JHound · 01/03/2025 19:04

Can somebody explain this to me like I am a 3 year old?!

SwanOfThoseThings · 01/03/2025 19:08

It is an opinion because you didn't specify a time period, you said 'ages' which can mean different things to different people (and in different contexts). For example, if you normally went out once a week with someone, you might say a gap of three weeks between outings was 'ages' but you probably wouldn't if your normal frequency was once a month.

Here are two opinions. They may be incorrect (opinions can be wrong).

Your relationship is a little toxic and both of you seem pedantic.

I reported it. Person attacks aren't allowed. It's doesn't have to be offensive MN clearly felt it was a personal attack as they deleted it.

There's no need for rudeness or getting personal. You could have said what you said without saying op sounds exhausting etc.

Can they? An opinion is entirely subjective. It can be ill informed, based on erroneous information or unpopular.

But, if someone believes it then it is their opinion whether you agree with it or not.

BeaAndBen · 01/03/2025 20:02

There’s a scene in a Woody Allen film - Annie Hall, I think - where it intercuts between Annie and Alvy discussing sex. He says “almost never” and she says “constant” and they both say ”twice a week!”

Your ages and his ages are different.

BettyButtersBatter · 02/03/2025 00:01

To update.
We went out and fun was had by all!
