To wonder what it's like to have nice hair

My hair is horrible, always has been regardless of what I've done with it. It's thick, brittle and frizzy. Tried keratin, tried curly method, it's also now more white than it's my natural colour so not only is it shit in style im prematurely white.

My whole life I've spent daily trying to style it, never been able to just wash and go or give it a brush and go. So, what's it like to have nice easy to manage hair??

I envy those that can just throw it up in a bun, I can't even do that due to how damaged it is around my face, there is loads of short bits that frizz up.

I ponder shaving it off to almost start again.

Don’t shave it off go to a decent hairdresser and get advice before doing anything drastic there must be something you can do.

Sinkintotheswamp · 01/03/2025 15:44

Same. I have partly cracked it at last by spending silly money on Philip Kingsley hair products. Curly girl method just made my hair look worse.
I spend a lot of time pondering why other people's hair doesn't fuzz out all over the place and swishes nicely

Not many have a glorious head of hair, the sooner we all shave it off the better.

Just offering solidarity- have always had fine and lifeless hair. All my DDs have great hair, so I think I must have passed the good stuff on and been left with the rubbish bit!

I have thick curly hair and I'm told weekly I have lovely hair . It's tricky to manage and looks minging if rough dry it but I know I'm lucky I have it .

Just spent a week on a glorious Scottish island where my near totally grey hair is soft, smooth and amazing... Heading home to fine, frizz and wild... Definitely a change of water.. Maybe rinse in Scottish water from Tesco??

Stickykidney · 01/03/2025 16:05

Same. Even tying it back the wispy frizz is so annoying... A girl at work uses brycream for hers... Swears by it and she has a sleek bun. Can bring myself to it yet that feels like a lot of product! Maybe more product would work but that would make me feel I need to wash it out too!

Stickykidney · 01/03/2025 16:06

I meant can't! Dunno how to edit

AnOldCynic · 01/03/2025 16:16

@Sinkintotheswamp what products do you use?

Thick and curly here, but quite dry and coarse at times.

Aparecium · 01/03/2025 17:20

Having had both, the only 'outside' difference is that people comment more when your hair looks good. More, not ask the time. As opposed to never commenting when your hair looks how it usually looks.

Sinkintotheswamp · 01/03/2025 17:42

AnOld the philip Kingsley yellow label bottles and elasticizer. It's horrifically expensive so I don't use it every week. It's much better than all the frizz ease and moisturising hair products. It makes my hair soft and gently curly.

People are envious of my auburn hair which is natural. It was more auburny as a kid and when return back from a holiday in warmer climates. Plus envious of its thickness and bounce.

Though its annoying because when its warm, the hair at the neck gets caked in sweat plus get hair growing near bottom of neck. Plus auburn hair does not go grey, it goes white - guessing about 5% of hair is white, which is embarrassing. Some people in their 80s are grey.

Newyeargymwanker · 01/03/2025 17:53

It’s expensive and takes ages.

It’s lots of little things….a great conditioner, a great heat protector, the right hair drier, sleeping in a bonnet (at least that what mine needs to flow).

Otherwise great hair turns to a dry frizzy mess in a heartbeat.

ramonaqueenbee · 01/03/2025 17:58

As a PP said...expensive and takes ages!

For years I hated my hair; thick, frizzy, not curly, just waves and kinks in annoying places meaning no haircut really worked.

I gave up for years but then did try some of the newer products eg living proof and elasticizer. They helped. Finding and sticking with a good hairdresser, who worked with the dry ends until they were gone was key. And finally, the most unexpected thing of all. I was late to work one day and dried my hair in the cool air con in the car. The difference to a hot hairdryer was amazing! Soft, normal hair!

Oh, and vitamins and drinking a lot of water...none of these things are a quick fix though!
