Anyone else get a bit anxious at the change of season?

Frreshbeddingcosynights · 28/02/2025 17:26

I'll start by saying that I am longing for better weather, lighter evenings, flowers and leaves on the trees.

But there is also part of me that gets a bit anxious when Spring is nearly here.

I'm not entirely sure why. I think that I feel as though there's a lot of pressure to be outside having a good time and making the most of the weather. Which is often a big let down.

I get really really hot at night and it's so noisy with the windows open. Summer has always bought out more crime and antisocial behaviour round here.

Anyone else? Or anyone want to remind me of the positives of Spring/Summer.

”… for unaliving”

what does this even mean?

People think seasonal affective disorder is just about people getting depressed in the winter time, whereas there are a smaller group of people that have it the opposite way round. Whereas some people struggle with the lack of light in winter, others can get summer depression and anxiety because of too much light. It causes chemical changes just like winter SAD.

I don’t mind this time of year but by the end of July I’m usually plagued by insomnia, feeling very anxious and a little manic. Disappears overnight once the dark nights start drawing in. I do also struggle with the crowds, noise and constant socialisation of summer too, and have started drawing my blackout curtains in the evenings during summer so I can get some rest from the light. Sounds weird I know, but it was a lightbulb moment when I read an article on it as it was absolutely me.

It's a stupid word that you have to use on social media. I don't want to get OP or myself in trouble for using the more explicit term. It might be OK on Mumsnet but it's best to be cautious.

Do you have Google available to you? That will answer your question.

I find this really interesting. There was a thread about it recently which made me realise that it was more common than I thought! I LOVE the transition into autumn and really don’t mind the winter in the lead up to Christmas. However I find the transition into spring really unsettling. Makes me feel queasy. I remember noticing it one early Saturday evening in March / April while a child, walking up the road. It’s something about the weak light and bird song!

This. Im glad winter lasts longer

StripyHorse · 28/02/2025 23:08

YANBU

I absolutely love the start of spring.

However, I find the end of summer / start of autumn very unsettling. I was worse when I wasn't working in education - I think it was a sense of expecting change but it not happening, whereas now I am back to having a new school year.

Yes I feel very much the same as you do OP.

Me too 💜

I’m absolutely thrilled at the slightly longer days, the crocus, snowdrops and daisies blooming. Loving seeing the birds mating behaviour and feeling that Spring is around the corner. It feels like it has been gloomy, wet and muddy for months. Because it has. That has made me miserable.
Bring on the longer days, windows open, birds singing and eating outside when I choose to.

Agree 💯

BatchCookBabe · 28/02/2025 23:22

No. I definitely don't feel anxious with the change of season. I love new seasons coming in.

Spring tomorrow! Hooorrayyyy!😄

The onset of spring is the only season change that makes me feel unsettled.

I think it's partly because the weather can yoyo even in a single day, and partly because of the dratted wind. Comfortable, dark winter clothes feel wrong even if the day is cold, because the light is brighter.

Plus, it means summer is inevitably around the corner. Where I live, summer is a season to be endured a lot of years, with unpleasant heat and humidity.

This. Completely. Thank you for expressing it so well.

MadamePeriwinkle · 28/02/2025 23:29

Yes! I've had an issue with spring since I was 17 and I'm nearly 50 now...quite comforting to know it's not just a me thing.

That said I'm not an outdoorsy person. I hate the heat and get awful hayfever so that all has a lot to do with it I suspect.

Pinkchilli · 28/02/2025 23:42

Yes! I kind of hate spring into summer. I have always felt weird. I had a traumatic loss in my childhood at this time year so think it is linked to this. I enjoy autumn & winter so much better love autumnal colours and Christmas.
then when I had kids I find there’s more pressure in spring/summer long holidays with a child who struggles with lack of routine and hate light nights/early morning and the heat that all make for early rises and cranky kids 🙃

SALaw · 01/03/2025 00:04

Pressure from who?!

LindorDoubleChoc · 01/03/2025 00:12

OMFG earliest ever moaning about warmer weather thread!! How can it be?

Perhaps we can start threads fretting about the temperature going above 10 degrees in January.

cherish123 · 01/03/2025 00:20

No. Looking forward to it. Three weeks yesterday until the start of spring!

HauntedBungalow · 01/03/2025 00:25

I love it when spring starts. Today was the first day I felt it and I was thrilled to be wearing just a t-shirt. (And trousers. I didn't get my fanny out or anything.)

But, the clock change throws me. I just can't get myself together once that happens, so I'm going to enjoy these few weeks now and then feel like nothing happens at the right time of day/in the right light... for months.

blueshoes · 01/03/2025 00:31

No I am not at all anxious about the change of seasons. There are currently lots of things to be anxious about but this is definitely not one of them.

MedusaAndHerFavourites · 01/03/2025 00:33

You're not wrong because what have right now is false spring.

Exasperateddonut · 01/03/2025 00:51

The emergence of spring always makes me so joyful. The move to autumn from late summer makes me so incredibly anxious. It’s like a switch is flipped and I’m so ill at ease.

BurntBroccoli · 01/03/2025 01:08

It was absolutely beautiful outside today and my walk was a pleasure.

NewMarmiteJar · 01/03/2025 01:08

Redheadedstepchild · 28/02/2025 17:38

My seasonal anxiety revolves around clothes mainly. I have adapted to my winter plumage and then when I have to change my feathers as it were, metaphorically speaking, I find it a bit of a worry.

Same in autumn. When is it too cold to be wearing this? I live in Southern Europe and an outfit that looks, "light and summery" in August quickly degenerates into tarty after the first thunderstorm of September.

Beautifully put.

SnowyintheATL · 01/03/2025 01:17

I’m hot natured and hate bugs so I start getting anxious around this time of the year. I hate summer and I hate the long days. I want to get cozy in my bed around 8:00 and I can’t do that if it stays light til 9/10. I’m already looking forward to autumn 😂

Tumbleweed101 · 01/03/2025 01:31

I love spring and autumn. The transitional seasons are my favourites. Right now I am so happy that when I leave work at 6pm and it is just about light enough to see when I get home after months of complete darkness at that time. I also know it is only going to get lighter.

I concentrate on the garden in summer and indoors gets neglected but I do the opposite in winter.

I know what you mean - I long for it to be warmer, but I can't stand the pressure summer brings!

What pressure?

Ay, What pressure is there? Or do you mean air pressure or something?
