Does dd need a head scan?

Dd aged 20 fainted in the bathroom in the middle of the night a week ago. We think she just got up too quickly? She was otherwise well but had had a few drinks beforehand. She got up the next morning and had several lumps all over her head both front and back. From the noise it made I think she initially fell forwards banged her head on the radiator then kept trying to get up, failing and falling back. Since then she's had pretty much constant headaches. At the weekend 111 told her to go to a & e. She did and it was a 7hr wait so she left.
The headaches have continued. If it's concussion I know it can last over a week but I am starting to get concerned.
Is it worth trying a&e again? I could try a walk in centre or GP but I fail to see what they can actually do at this point.

Yes.

She needs to be scanned.

If she's not willing to wait in A&E, there's not much you can do.

Pebblesthepug74 · 27/02/2025 14:29

I'm hoping if we go now it won't be 7 hrs. It was a Sun evening before which may well be busier?

When she attended A&E before, did she explain the continuing headaches?

Any vomiting, double vision, further dizziness? The headaches alone are a concern. I'd rarely recommend A&E, but would on this occasion. Otherwise, if there is a minor injuries attached to a larger A&E, they could access and refer to the main A&E if necessary.

Regardless of how long it takes, isn't it worth the wait?

She's had constant headaches for a week after banging her head several times? And 111 told her to go to A&E? Then yes, she needs to go to A&E. No idea if she needs a scan or not, but she definitely needs to get further professional medical advice. It's probably nothing, but head injuries shouldn't be second guessed.

I am curious - she obviously wasn't alone when this happened, it seems she was drunk and "from the noise it made I think she initially fell forwards banged her head on the radiator then kept trying to get up, failing and falling back". Did nobody think of going to help her? Trying to get up and failing to do so, repeatedly hitting her head in the process, sounds like more than "a few drinks"

Pebblesthepug74 · 27/02/2025 14:49

Of course I went to help her. It woke me up! She wasn't overly drunk. Likely very disoriented since it was 5am. Like I was!

Is there an urgent care near you? I had bad headaches after a head injury and only waited an hour. Turned out it was just concussion but if I’d had other symptoms such as vomiting, weakness, dizziness they would have done a CT scan and the dr encouraged me to go back if I still had concerns.

bottlemom · 27/02/2025 15:06

She banged her head multiple times a week ago, enough to have multiple bumps on the front and the back. She's had a headache for a week, and was told to go to a&e but didn't want to wait. I think the solution is pretty obvious, OP - she needs to go to a&e

Northerngirl821 · 27/02/2025 15:07

If you google Nice Guidance Head Injury you can find the criteria used to decide if a CT scan is needed.

To be fair, that isn't what you said, and even at 5am I would have had someone to the hospital if they had fallen and hit their head several times.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 27/02/2025 15:08

She needs to go to A&E and I can't believe you haven't insisted beforehand.

Notgivenuphope · 27/02/2025 15:21

She is incredibly foolish for leaving A&E. Tell her to take a book and wait. Yes 7 hrs is a long time but you are much longer dead if you need lifesaving treatment (sure it won't come to that).

Pebblesthepug74 · 27/02/2025 15:25

We're here now. She's got adhd and is a nightmare in these situations. She's only diagnosed adhd but likely autistic too. She gets really overwhelmed and is panicking because people are going to the toilet alot. Because there's norovirus signs up shes convinced herself she's going to catch it and is currently outside. She rants and rants and is pretty unbearable so I'm glad she's in the car park!
They have said she's booked in with a GP there so no idea if that will speed things up or not?

stichguru · 27/02/2025 15:26

She needs to go to A&E and wait until she is seen and treated. If that's 7 hours or 27 so be it.

Pebblesthepug74 · 27/02/2025 20:18

So we're home and have had the all clear! Cannot fault the service in any way. She was seen by a GP in 50 minutes, then a nurse an hour later then an a & e doctor half hr after that. I mean he did have to deal with her in the corridor like many others as no cubicles but never mind! She was sent for a ct scan, an ecg and throughly examined. They ended up finding out she had a sinus infection!! So that was causing the headaches not the head injury. What a relief!! They did however tell us she should have gone straight in!! But with a strong willed dd who refuses that's easier said than done. But alls well that ends well
