To demote myself?!

I just got a better job because I'm a single parent of 3 and I need the money! I've always been quite ambitious but have realised that I can't commit to the extra hours needed to move directly upwards in my field, so I wanted to work somewhere I'd have great up to date knowledge and keep developing myself whilst not heading a company or anything. Like a sideways (better paid) move.

I'm now doing a role which was done by someone who didn't work full time, so then I've got various extra responsibilities on top to justify the extra hours. I can do it all, it's all great, I'm enjoying it. It is a physically and emotionally demanding job and is a challenge, I'm not coasting along by any means, and I've been motivated by the new job.

BUT my personal life is hard. I'm always stressed about all the kids stuff going on and we have court proceedings regarding their father which are really emotive and mentally draining (also loads of admin!)

AIBU to ask to 'just' do the part time hours and sort of demote myself. As I earn more now I'd be paid the same for the lower hours as I was in my previous full time role (just moved jobs a month before Xmas) so I know we could just about survive on that.
YANBU- take the time off
YABU- you moved job to get more money, crack on with it.

I depends on the organisation, in mine we'd consider a temporary reduction for say 6 months if you're having those additional personal issues but might want to step back up later on.

YANBU. I would take fewer hours for the same pay any time that was an option.

@tilypu when you put it like that it seems a no-brainer. Thanks. I was overthinking all the layers of 'what people would think' as well as I should really follow the more money

More money is great when you need it - but it sounds like what you need, right now, is more time.

When the kids are older and life is less hectic, you can reevaluate.
