To go to bed at 8pm

I work normal hours but I’m always tired and if I’m not doing much in the evening, like tonight, I like nothing better than getting into bed to read or browse online. It’s warmer and comfier than sitting on the sofa and I don’t go to sleep until around 10 but it feels a bit wrong - I used to hide in my bed a lot when I was going through a tough time and I suppose I worry that it’s similar.

Edited to add I live alone so I’m not offending or neglecting anyone.

Why not …. Be comfortable … (typing this in bed!! … been here for 20 minutes already).

CuteEasterBunny · 25/02/2025 19:56

I’ve just brushed my teeth and jumped into bed to relax. I do it often during winter and never feel bad about it.

Hellskitchen24 · 25/02/2025 19:57

I do this literally every night unless there is something pressing on the telly. Nowt wrong with it.

Abigaillovesholidays · 25/02/2025 19:58

When I lived alone, I felt the same so I got a duvet for the sofa- was just as snug as being in bed!

mumbruh · 25/02/2025 20:00

Family of four here. We often come upstairs at about 7.30 and watch tv in bed together (kids are still smallish) then kids go to bed at 8.30 anyway

JesusH · 25/02/2025 20:01

I do it all the time. I love to go to bed early and just get cosy and relaxed.

me too!

Coatsoff42 · 25/02/2025 20:29

It’s winter, it’s dark and cold outside, it seems completely natural.
You’ve persuaded me into an early night!!!

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 25/02/2025 20:29

I’m in bed.

Once the sun goes to sleep it’s fair game.

Coatsoff42 · 25/02/2025 20:30

Would also add: if you’re always tired get the GP to check your bloods for anaemia or low vit d or something like that xx

hardtocare · 25/02/2025 20:35

Not at all unreasonable. If you'd said you were going to bed and leaving a partner to put kids to bed then you would be unreasonable if doing every night but you do you! I used to love my bed when I was young and childless

valder · 25/02/2025 20:42

What exactly is wrong with going to bed say before 9pm please? Because I'm in big trouble if it turns out I have some sort of problem 😊

In Summer it's different, but in Winter what's the point of sitting on a sofa and nodding off, then having to get up from that warm cocoon to go to bed anyway?

I live alone also and I am off to bed soon to watch Apple Cider Vinegar on Netflix (on my tablet), lying on one of those V pillows, heated blanket on full blast and I can't wait.

The only thing I do is make sure the kitchen is all cleaned up, dishes washed and all is ready for morning, that's a habit my late mother bashed into me back in the day. Then once the clock goes a minute beyond 8.30 I am ready to go.

Just live the way YOU want to live. As long as it's not a selfish act like leaving someone else to clean up or sit on their own (even then .....lol) it's absolutely one of the joys of single living.

themaskedcat · 25/02/2025 20:44

I do this as early as I can during the colder months. Sometimes as early as 6.30. It's comfier and warmer than the sofa

TheDandyLion · 25/02/2025 20:46

I'm already on bed. The cat shouts at me if I'm not in by 8.

PassingStranger · 25/02/2025 20:53

Nothing wrong with it.
Although if there's lots of you in different rooms with lights on and heating it's.. more expensive.

Laserwho · 25/02/2025 20:53

I'm normally in bed by 8. I have older teens so they can manage themselves in the evening

Oblomov25 · 25/02/2025 20:54

I do it regularly. Put blanket on, jump into bed early, read Mumsnet, go to sleep.

RockStarMartini · 25/02/2025 20:55

Haha I’m glad to know I’m not alone! I’ve only lived by myself for a short time since my DD left home and it feels a bit self-indulgent but when you think about it, it makes perfect sense!

I’ve got V-pillow, phone, Kindle, tea and mostly importantly no bra! The house is tidy and sorted for the morning and I’d rather be here than channel hopping on the sofa. When it gets lighter in the evenings I’m usually in the garden but until then I’ll enjoy my hibernation and hope you all do too ☺️

I honestly think if I lived alone, I would live in bed. In my dream world, that would be a super king with fresh sheets every night.

Downtoearthandsinksthesun · 25/02/2025 21:21

I do it every night. It's a form of self care. It is my safe and happy place after the madness of the day. You enjoy every min of it OP.

Reframetheguilt · 25/02/2025 21:36

Um! Yes! What they said! Why not!

Pussycat22 · 25/02/2025 21:41

I sometimes wonder if 7.00.pm is too early!!!!

CherryBlossom321 · 25/02/2025 21:44

If I could, I totally would. I don’t think there’s anything at all wrong with that.

Violashifts · 26/02/2025 06:59

I do it all of the time.

If it's particularly cold and I have a good series to watch. I will go at 6pm.

maximalistmaximus · 26/02/2025 08:50

I don't really understand this as a question.

I spend most evenings in my room/bedroom.

It's more heat/fuel efficient as the duvet is warmer than a throw on the couch.

I have a tv in my room so it's not like I need to be in the living room to watch it.

I have what I need right next to me and no one else's clutter.

Who invented some rule that you should be in the living room until sleep time????
