Incessant cough

Has anyone else had a never ending cough following some type of viral infection?

I was given antibiotics for a chest infection which I finished last week but I’m still coughing so badly sometimes almost to the point I can’t breathe?

of course I’ll seek medical help if needs be but I’m wondering if something has been going round im or if it’s just me

Yes and it was whooping cough.

DrNo007 · 25/02/2025 18:22

Yep whooping cough and once you have had it as an adult it can recur or turn into a chronic cough ( my own experience).

Not so far. I get a bad cough most winters, the last time it got so bad I developed a bacterial infection and needed antibiotics but they sorted it really quickly. If you’re still coughing that badly after a course of antibiotics I would be back to the dr.

AllHisCaterpillarFriends · 25/02/2025 18:28

I got it with Covid, prescribed an inhaler and cleared but took a few months.

LegoHouse274 · 25/02/2025 18:29

I'm on day 9 of a cough/chest infection/bronchitis with associated cold symptoms (sore throat, fever, aches, fatigue etc). Haven't been to the GP though, just been managing it at home. My DH works in primary care though and he's not concerned. All 5 of us have had it but I have had it the longest and the worst - I'm still getting regular high temperatures even and feel utterly rubbish. Took the 4mo to the GP this morning as hes also got it and had temps since Thursday, GP wasn't concerned and said it's a viral infection.

I'd honestly think it was flu considering how ill we've all been if it were not the fact that all of have been vaccinated. Well, except the baby but I was pregnant with them when I had mine.

Alwaystired2023 · 25/02/2025 18:30

My daughter did and the doctor said it was a variant of asthma and gave her a blue inhaler !

sunshine237 · 25/02/2025 18:30

Yes. Been coughing since October. Had two more winter viruses in meantime as well 🤦‍♀️

Cunningfungus · 25/02/2025 18:35

@greekislandsparty I had the most horrendous post-viral cough a few years back (not Covid). It was awful - I had to leave work as bf go home one day because my colleagues couldn’t get any work done for me coughing!

GP said my “chest was clear” so I’d just need to put up with it til it stopped. 6 weeks is typical.

I got so depressed (couldn’t sleep, exhausted, sore ribs from coughing, couldn’t go to fitness classes and didn’t even want to socialise/go to cinema etc as I was so embarrassed by coughing) that I went to the of hours GP and burst into tears! They gave me an inhaler (salbutamol) which did help a bit but could have been placebo effect.

I hope you get some respite soon as it’s truly an awful thing💐

cramptramp · 25/02/2025 18:53

Yes. Four weeks now. Can't sleep, permanently exhausted. GP says it's a virus and didn't give me anything. I'm really fed up.

crocheteveryday · 25/02/2025 19:36

It's not uncommon to have a lingering cough after an infection. My daughter had it recently and it was caused by post nasal drip. Worth seeing the GP if it doesn't resolve. In the meantime staying well hydrated and steam inhalation can help.

Exactly the same here, it's exhausting! So much worse the minute I lie down. I genuinely wondered if it was whooping cough but the pharmacist was pretty sure it was unlikely. I've coughed so much I've been sick, argh!

LegoHouse274 · 25/02/2025 20:50

I actually had a cough for six months after my first bout of covid.

Dayfurrrrit · 25/02/2025 20:52

Yep, had whooping cough in November. Only stopped coughing in the last few weeks. It would settle but then any slight virus (I’ve got young kids bringing home all the bugs) would set it off again.

Itsallabouttea · 25/02/2025 22:15

For pp who had whooping cough was it diagnosed? My symptoms are textbook but the pharmacist I spoke to said it was very unlikely. My husband is fine as well and whooping cough is really contagious so I don't know. Just wish it would stop! I'm getting through a ton of over the counter cough syrup

Papadonut · 25/02/2025 22:19

Me too. I got covid in December and never coughed this long. I still have coughing fit 3 months later and I feel that there's something in my chest even though xray is clear.

ThinWomansBrain · 25/02/2025 22:23

I often get bronchitis after anything cold/fluey - mostly antibiotics will clear it, but I was given an inhaler on one occasion when it was very persistent, even though it wasn't asthma - it did help.

Bohoboo · 25/02/2025 23:34

Whooping cough! Husband has it and has also stopped him sleeping. On second lot of antibiotics causing more insomnia. I haven't caught it though.

Yes with a nasal swab but I’m not in the UK. Me and the two kids had it but DH didn’t. He did get given antibiotics tho anyway to reduce his chances of getting it.

In the end homeopathy was the only thing that worked. There’s an abbreviation, TEETH. It means, tried everything else, try homeopathy. Self prescribing is no good though, you have to go to a professional.
