So I just have to live with this noise…

New neighbours moved upstairs and they are very loud.

Bang, bang, bang all day long. Ok, it’s a flat, I will take it in the daytime.

But it goes on all night from midnight until 5 am. Jumping on the floorboards over and over.

I left it a few days thinking that they would hear us downstairs and maybe realise how thin the floors are but no.

One particular bad night when it sounded like a metal bar was dropping on the floor, I went upstairs and knocked on their door and said I could hear them and my children were trying to sleep, this was about 11.30pm. The neighbour apologised and asked her dd to stop.

I haven’t been back up there but the noise hasn’t stopped. It startles me awake and I don’t understand when they sleep if they do it all day and night.

Yesterday was really bad, someone jumping up and down and arguing, children crying. On and off until 6am. I had been up with my 11 month old in the night also.

I texted my landlord (he owns the block) this morning and mentioned the noise and that I had previously gone up there to ask them to keep it down. He rang me straight back and said that he doesn’t appreciate me harassing his tenants and that they have a right to walk around, if I want a place with no noise then I should buy my own! I was shocked and said I’m talking about banging in the night time or dropping something over and over. He didn’t care but said later on he will speak to them.

I think he has told them because now I hear purposeful banging on the floor almost spitefully and I’m guessing they will OTT do it at night.

Am I just expected to suck this up?

No. You report the noise to the council, they can assess the noise levels. Are you all renting from the same landlord.

Quitelikeit · 25/02/2025 14:54

Sounds like a nightmare situation that is not easily going to resolve itself

You should record these noises and send them to your landlord

Also send them in real-time so if it’s 3am you send it to him

Yes he owns most of the properties in this small block. The tenants before used to only play loud music now and then but I never heard this level of banging and I lived with them for 6 years above me. I never complained to the landlord about them. This is the first time.

This new neighbour has only been here about 2 months. I am getting no sleep. The council website says to talk to them first before you complain, which is what I tried but now it’s being seen as harassment.

Start making recordings of the noise and report it to the council.

He will probably evict me if I do that. I feel like they got in there first because where did this harassment charge come from when I only went up there once?

YANBU, it's awful living with noisy neighbours upstairs who don't care that their floor is your ceiling. Get on to the council and keep getting on to the landlord, plus if there's serious sounding violence up there like metal bars being crashed about, contact the police too. The trouble with these people is they genuinely don't care about anyone else. Don't get fobbed off by people claiming it's just "lifestyle differences" - that's the first line of defence you'll get from people who can't be bothered to investigate.

Bigfishes · 25/02/2025 14:58

Do you rent? When is your lease up? I’d be planning on moving out and telling your landlord why.

Kalteenbars · 25/02/2025 15:03

I can’t move at the moment.

I like the suggestion of real time recordings, I would certainly do that and send to the landlord!

Council complaint and what is your lease situation, is it impacting your work because that might also be an aggravating factor you can raise.

Not sure what you mean by harassment charge?

I can’t move at the moment.

If you can't move then realistically you will have to live with the noise as the landlord and tenants are clearly not bothered.

I would work on moving.

BarneyRonson · 25/02/2025 15:07

Earplugs. Work on moving.

HundredMilesAnHour · 25/02/2025 15:07

Your landlord sounds unpleasant. Maybe he had an existing relationship with the new tenants or maybe he’s just an arsehole but realistically, your only viable option is to move.
