to wonder if I'm the only person who hates dark mode?

I've just been wondering about this after landing on a webpage that had been 'thoughtfully' served up in dark mode with no option to change the colour scheme. I've heard a lot of people say they find it easier on their eyes, which makes me wonder if I have weird eyes as I really have to strain them to read a page in dark mode. And yet it is so popular that it must help a lot of people.

Just curious, anyone else like me? I'm sure there must be...

YABU = I like dark mode
YABNU = I don't like dark mode

Dark mode is when the page is black with white letters ? I have my Kindle set up like this on my phone as I like to read at night, also it saves battery.

I don't mind either though. Dark takes a bit of getting used to it but I barely even notice which one it is now.

rosegoldsequin · 23/02/2025 14:13

My eyes are terrible in dim light and I really struggle with dark mode.

ShinySquirrel · 23/02/2025 14:14

I hate it. I'm ND and it's supposed to be helpful, but it's so difficult for me to read. I can't focus on anything, it makes all the information blur together.

Octonaut4Life · 23/02/2025 14:14

I struggle with dark mode. I have astigmatism and I understand a lot of people with astigmatism struggle with dark mode because of the halo effect.

DappledThings · 23/02/2025 14:14

I don't like it. Got a new phone this week and it was the default on loads of apps. No idea why. Had to change them all.

But then I'm also a big fan of the big light. Don't understand the hatred for it and the love of lamps which are just prissy and gloomy.

Same here

Meecrowahvey · 23/02/2025 14:18

I can't read properly in dark mode, the words sort of blur. Gives me a migraine.

DaveMinion · 23/02/2025 14:20

I only use dark mode. I'm extremely light sensitive and works best for me.

RampantIvy · 23/02/2025 14:21

I think most people find reading white writing on a black background more difficult. Why do you think schools have ditched blackboards for whiteboards?

I learned from this comment why I struggle with dark mode!

menopausalfart · 23/02/2025 14:23

The only time I use it is when I'm in bed. It's easier on the eyes.

menopausalfart · 23/02/2025 14:24

@Octonaut4Life I have astigmatism and find dark mode easier on my eyes at night.

ruethewhirl · 23/02/2025 17:00

Interesting re astigmatism. I can't remember offhand whether I have it or not, but I definitely get that blurring sensation when I have to read something in dark mode.

I hate dark mode! When I look away I can see lines in my vision, it makes me feel almost travel sick. I do like a very dim screen and often use the night mode which ups the yellowness of the screen but dark mode is such a struggle for me to read.

Youhaveyourhandsfull · 23/02/2025 17:05

It's awful, but like having subtitles on all the time, it's something The Kids all seem to like so it's becoming a popular default.
I can't use it.

Don't hate me but I'm in my fifties and I have to admit I have subtitles on all the time. 😂 There's just so much mumbling in films and TV shows these days, I'm sure it never used to be so bad!

Glad it's not just me re dark mode, though. There seems to be such universal assent these days that it's easier on the eyes, and that's been the polar opposite of my experience.

I hate it too. DH moans about the brightness of my phone at times because he loves dark mode but I struggle to read it.

BertieBotts · 24/02/2025 16:28

I only like it when it's dark in the room, and that's only because it makes the light from my phone less disturbing to others.

I remember reading probably about 20 years ago that dark background, light text is easier on the eyes/easier to read on a screen. And I used to have my computer set up like that and some websites as well - but that was when everyone had those massive CRT screens. Since moving to flat screen, the image is generally so crisp and clear that switching between dark and light mode constantly is really jarring and I hate it. Since light mode stuff tends to not have the option to switch, I usually stick with light mode everywhere and then on the phone, let it switch based on sunset time, since I don't use it to view websites in the evening anyway.

I also think that the myth about blue light from screens disturbing your sleep is behind some of the switch to dark mode, so people think they can't use their phone close to sleep but if it's in dark mode it's OK Grin

No judgement there - I am terrible for being on a screen right up to the moment I close my eyes - but I find it's the content I'm consuming that makes a difference, not whether or not it's dark or light. (Plus the blue light thing was definitely debunked yet it continues to be repeated forever).

AlmostAJillSandwich · 24/02/2025 16:36

I have astigmatism and light sensitivity, i LOVE dark mode when it's been properly implemented by the actual site rather than using a browser add on. I couldn't use youtube at all without it. As long as the text is white, its great. Can't stand when they make the text yellow though.
My screen brightness lives on 25% or lower regardless or dark mode or not, or i get headaches and visual auras.

AlmostAJillSandwich · 24/02/2025 16:38

On MN i hate the bg colour it makes OP posts though, i find that difficult to read.

SwanOfThoseThings · 24/02/2025 16:39

No, I can't get on with it at all.

I'm pretty sure you can change the colour. On my laptop the OP's posts are shaded in green.

I'm not bothered either way, but loads of people don't like dark mode so you're not alone. Equally, some people prefer to use it all the time.

I think that, given that dark mode is really easy to enable and disable on most people's own devices, it's stupid for websites and apps to deliver dark mode automatically. Much better to leave it to the user to decide for themselves and change their own settings to suit them.

Yeah, that was what irked me - a really text-heavy webpage, white on black. It wasn't something that was essential for me to read, so I didn't bother. Wouldn't be surprised it I wasn't the only one!
