Feeling of a veil over one eye?

Ricecakesaremyjam · 23/02/2025 09:40

Late last night, one of my eyes felt strange. Cloudy/blurry. Very briefly when I closed the other eye, it was as though the affected eye had a veil over it - I could see, but it was noticeably darker in that eye. This happened for a few minutes, I went to sleep, woke up this morning and all ok but that eye does feel like I have something in it but can’t nothings coming out or visibly there.
I’m permanently tired and stressed, would this affect my vision at random? Or does this sound like some sort of emergency?

It's something you should make an appointment with an optician about.

XWKD · 23/02/2025 09:46

Not to alarm you, but... My friend had dimming in one eye and the doctor thought it was a detached retina, but it was a stroke.

It could just be something in your eye, but get it checked out just I case.

wtftodo · 23/02/2025 09:47

This can be an emergency yes.

tpmumtobe · 23/02/2025 09:53

A veil over one eye is classic sign of a detached retina (my Mum had one and I'm at high risk so I know the symptoms to watch for) you need A&E asap. If it is a detachment they can fix it, but only if you're seen promptly.

Info here: https://www.moorfields.nhs.uk/eye-conditions/retinal-detachment

helpfulperson · 23/02/2025 09:54

Sound like a vitreous collapse but can be other things and is an emergency. I would suggest trying to get an optician appointment today. Some of the bigger chains are open on Sundays. Or phone 111 and see what they say.

This.

Ring 111 and they will tell you where to go to get checked. Sometimes they’ll send you to an optician who has the ability to check your retinas and sometimes they’ll send you straight to an an and e eye clinic. (I have retinal issues).

potatopaws · 23/02/2025 09:56

I’d honestly go to A&E right now OP, it could be a detached retina.

ETA If it is, waiting for optician appointment will just waste time. I’d go right away.

TwinklyRoseTurtle · 23/02/2025 09:56

If you have an emergency eye hospital near you need to be seen today, if not your nearest A&E as like others have said could be stroke, detached retina etc

Ponoka7 · 23/02/2025 09:56

I've deleveloped similar and conjunctivitis due to stress. We are lucky because we have an eye A&E, so wouldn't wait long. I'd book an optician appointment with the extra scan. I've also got a cold sore, so took a day off yesterday. It could be something else, or it could be your body saying enough is enough.

olympicsrock · 23/02/2025 09:57

This could be a detached retina or ocular stroke . Don’t mess around and go toED at a hospital with an eye department today.

tpmumtobe · 23/02/2025 10:01

I should add, tiredness and stress can also cause those symptoms, as can the jelly pulling away from your retina (annoying but mainly harmless). I've often ended up in Moorfields only for them to say it's something totally benign BUT they always tell me it's better to come in and get checked and they'd rather see me 100 times for it to be nothing, rather than miss the worst case scenario. Hope all goes well, it can be frightening but it's amazing what they can do with eyes these days.

Jollyjoy · 23/02/2025 10:04

I had something a bit like this and was diagnosed with dry eyes (blepharitis) and drops helped. But sounds like from pps there could be more serious explanations so better to get checked out.

Marylou62 · 23/02/2025 10:07

Happened to me and it was an eye bleed caused by a small retinal detachment..

Absolutely requires a trip to opticians or a&e..

Just an aside.. I had to have laser treatment there and then and I was very very anxious (I have an eye phobia). I nearly walked out..

But apart from a bit of discomfort it was actually fine..
Good luck..

OMG this is terrifying 😫

You can do it. ❤️

angelinawasrobbed · 23/02/2025 10:13

Ring 111 before gong to A&E - many hospitals have contracted their eye work out to Specsavers, where you will be seen urgently without charge

letslaughitoff · 23/02/2025 10:14

Do you suffer with migraines.

It is, I've been through it a few times and I feel physically sick every time with the panic but the quicker you get seen the quicker it's resolved. And if it is a detachment they fix it really quickly, it's a quick zap with a laser, doesn't take long.

I just remembered Moorfields has an emergency line you can call for advice, let me find it, you can talk to an eye nurse...

tpmumtobe · 23/02/2025 10:16

Annoyingly the number isn't open on Sundays but there's more info here:

In our area you need to be triaged by an optician first. Few A&E's have the expertise for eye issues and the eye hospital only accepts you if referred by an optician. This is why 111 or and optician is the best starting point, they will know the system.

Sorry - quoted wrong post but can't work out how to change it. This was in the person who said go straight to A&E.

Definitely this.

tpmumtobe · 23/02/2025 10:20

I've found the Moorfields retinal emergency number, they are open on Sundays until 12.30pm. Even if you're not in London they will be able to offer advice:

Our telephone number is 0207 566 2593.

Hobnobswantshernameback · 23/02/2025 10:20

Go and see an optician asap.
it's probably nothing but it might not be and needs checking

SavageGarden23 · 23/02/2025 10:20

Hi OP I had this and filled out 111form .they rang eye hospital AnE to let them know I was on my way.I had a huge floater and the feeling of veil over as well ,as I was constantly trying to move it away . If its the gel substance in the eyeball detachment, nothing to worry as it will subside, more like your brain will ignore the floaters etc. I just need to be careful on sunny days to use sunglasses as they are more noticeable. If its retinal detachment there has to be an Ops asap.I have been warned to go immediately if I start seeing a shadow coming over my sight.best of luck.

tpmumtobe · 23/02/2025 23:15

@Ricecakesaremyjam How are you doing, did you manage to get seen?
