New washing machine. Can't cope. Urgent advice. (Lighthearted)

My old washing machine was about 17 years old and very good until it packed in. Time for a new one.

So got a new one. And I'm shocked at the washing times!!

Eco : 3 hrs 45 mins

Easy care : 3 hours.

Cottons: 3 hrs 20 mins.

Way, way too long! Surely that will wear out the fabric of the
things being washed, being swished about in water and detergent for hours on end.

The easy care and mixed wash programmes are less than an hour so not an option. It's just not enough when you include two rinses. Surely things can't be clean in less than 30 mins.

There's a 'quick wash' button you can press on most programmes but then it reduces the time from 3hrs 45 mins to an hour. Which isn't quite long enough
if half of it is rinsing. I'm at my wits end. I want stuff to be clean but 3 hrs 45 mins
seems hugely excessive. And one hour seems not nearly enough.

I've read the manual, tested all the many various programmes and options available, pressed all the buttons and I still cannot make my new washing machine get in line and do what I want it to do. Which is to complete a wash in one hour and a half. Not almost 4 hours, or less than one hour. One and a half hours all told is all I ask. One hour wash, 30 mins rinse, like my old one did, very well, for many years.

I just want comments really. AIBU?

My view might be skewed because I'm old, and never met a washing machine until I was 18 and my mother got a sort of 'drum' washer with an agitator at the bottom. It washed your clothes and took most of the hard work out of washing.
You had to fill it up with hot water via a rubber pipe from the geyser in the kitchen.
When the things were washed you had to drain the dirty water out from the bottom into a bucket in stages and empty it down the sink.

Then you had to take the stuff out and wring it out by hand and then fill the drum up with cold water and put all the stuff back in to agitate and rinse. And you had to do that twice because once didn't get all the soap out. Obviously draining and filling as necessary. It all sounds like a load of faff, and it certainly was a load of faff. My two brothers and I often got home from school and helped my mother with this and that. They were both much older than me by 8 and 9 years so probably much more helpful than I was. But I did my bit.

In those far off days though, nobody had social media or mobile phones to distract them, and take them away from the here and now.. We got off the bus from school and walked home with our friends if they got off at the same stop.
If not then you walked home alone. It was so normal it simply wasn't an issue.
Kids walked home quite happily without a screen to stare at.

It makes me so sad when I see young people so engrossed in their phone screen. They are missing out on so much of real life. It's limiting their overall development as a functioning adult human being.

Modern machines wash far better Op, mine weighs the wash and reduces the time if it's not a full load, a smaller loads less than an hour. Try yours and see, big time and money saver

I feel your pain.
I swapped my trusty Siemens washing machine with a seemingly nearly identical one of the same brand. I hate it.
The cotton wash is nearly 3hrs.
The eco wash is over 4hrs. The eco wash doesn't wash properly, clothes come out smelling unclean - like damp dirty water.
There is a fast wash button, but we found pressing this means things don't rinse very well. Lots of the programs automatically select a low spin speed, I can up this with the spin button, but often forget, so have to spin again when I realise the washing is soggy.
There's no prewash! so when washing really dirty stuff I have to run 2 programs.
So frustrating and I probably use more electricity/water by circumventing their eco measures.

Looking at the Siemens website, all their current machines have a Prewash button on the panel on the right of the dial - does yours not have this?

CarpetSlipper · 23/02/2025 07:57

I wash everything on a 28 min quick wash unless it’s visibly dirty. It’s perfectly fine.

Jemimapuddleduk · 23/02/2025 08:00

I use the easy care/mixed load one and press the pre wash button (you add extra detergent in) then it brings it to around 1hour 30. What make and model is it?

MyFlightWasAwfulThanksForAsking · 23/02/2025 08:01

So you want the quick wash to be...longer. Confused
I bet that one didn't come up in the market research.

Geneticsbunny · 23/02/2025 08:02

The eco wash is fine. You just get used to setting it to run at a time when you are about to go out or first thing in the morning. It is rare to actually need a wash to be done in an hour or less? Eco wash is less aggressive on the clothes so they will last longer too.

Mumdiva99 · 23/02/2025 08:02

As clever as the machines are......we all have that one button we use over and over.
Ours is a 45 mi ute wash at 40 degrees. It's fine for everything. Delicates, football kits, towels, work clothes, school uniform.....

GottaGetOutofDairy · 23/02/2025 08:07

Mine (also new) says it's going to take 3.5 hours but never does. It's normally about 1.5-2 hrs.

1apenny2apenny · 23/02/2025 08:11

My Bosch is like this. My old one used to weigh and adjust and I didn't check the programmes sufficiently when I bought this. It does have the option to reduce the time but its for half the load. Basically a large full load 9kg is a long wash 3.5 hours.

Phunkychicken · 23/02/2025 08:13

I do the one hour program then an extra rinse then an extra spin and that's a total of hour and a half. And everything seems to be clean and not smelly.

I do use bio detergent though which I'm sure helps.

At least it just beeps. The tumble dryer plays a jaunty tune when it's done and then every few minutes until you turn it off. It is incredibly annoying and attention seeking

Caspianberg · 23/02/2025 08:16

The eco is eco as washing sits longer at each stage.

Ours has a time save button. You can use on every setting. For example cotton is 3.20, time save once is 2hrs, time save twice is 1hr10. I use long one when not rushed as it hairs less water and energy, but just time save if I want it washed and hung up before I go somewhere

Most also weigh clothes now. For example ours is 9kg machine. It’s 3hr20 cotton, but if I start it one that and only put 6kg in then after about 5 mins it adjusts down and is faster

crazyday24 · 23/02/2025 08:24

I've got a Hoover washing machine: I wash nigh on everything, apart from towels and bedding (or whites!), on a 15 minute wash. Always comes out lovely and clean!

pizzaHeart · 23/02/2025 08:25

The latest machines have longer cycles because they are designed for bigger load. But I feel your pain OP .If you live alone or have a small family (as I do) it’s not what you are after. And by the way researching the length of time before buying is not easy.

I didn’t read your post about your mum fully ( too long for me) but mine had a similar machine with a hose and so on. She is on her second modern one atm, don’t remember the brand. She uses only two programmes though but otherwise manages fine.

Alondra · 23/02/2025 08:26

I haven't read all the answers but new front loaders have long programs to minimise water and electricity consumption. I have an AEG and the cotton cycle is 3.20 hours. The machine also has a 20 minute wash but should only be used for a 3 kg wash with minimal stains.

Washing machines have come a long way. They are maximising clean clothes with very little water and electricity consumption but much longer cycles.

Unless you want to switch to a top loader, I can't offer any suggestions.

JeremiahBullfrog · 23/02/2025 08:31

I wash most of my clothes for 30 minutes. That seems to be plenty to get rid of a day's sweat.

Muddy clothes, bedsheets etc. get longer. The long washes are annoying but it's not as if I'm never at home for a three-hour period.

Ilovemyshed · 23/02/2025 08:33

Mines got s speed button so a cotton cycle goes from 3+ hrs to 1.5 hrs. Mixed load is an hour though as standard. Its Bosch, non wifi, about 2 yrs old

Ilovemyshed · 23/02/2025 08:35

Ohyeahwaitaminute · 23/02/2025 06:57

Both my dishwasher and washing machine have eco programmes and both get ‘fired off’ before I go to bed at night or out for the morning… but I hear you!

They’re both about 10 years old, so I can only imagine any replacement would then take about a week to do a wash 🤣

Seriously, you should never leave a dishwasher on overnight, its one of the largest causes of house fires.

Strictlymad · 23/02/2025 08:37

Unless you are a mechanic I’m sure 1 hour is enough to freshen up clothes. I use the hot cotton cycle for bedding and towels and a quick hour for clothes

SleepyLlamaFace · 23/02/2025 08:40

I specifically bought our washing machine because it has a 28min speed wash, which I knew would be the default setting for everything bar towels and bedding. I have 3 teens and not enough time for 3 hour wash cycles!

Miffyisverymiffed · 23/02/2025 08:42

BertieBotts · 23/02/2025 07:57

Looking at the Siemens website, all their current machines have a Prewash button on the panel on the right of the dial - does yours not have this?

No. My previous two machines (both Siemens) had the button to the right of the dial, this one doesn't, it's not a basic model either. I didn't even think to check before I bought it as I've never seen a machine without a prewash.

Just1outof8billion · 23/02/2025 08:44

Hello
Havnt read your whole post, but wonder if I can help you find a faster cycle.
What is the model number of your washing machine? If you're not sure, there should be a sticker inside the door with it on.

AlisonDonut · 23/02/2025 08:45

Oh my god OP you've started a new washing thing.

Not just how often people wash but how long each wash is on for.

What were you thinking?

Miffyisverymiffed · 23/02/2025 08:46

And whilst I'm whinging🙈. If you use the short washes on mine it reduces the load allowance. If I use the fast wash button, it halves the load allowance, if I cheat and fill it full anyway it weighs and often adds time on. It's a 9kg machine, but only actually washes 9kg on the one cotton longest wash.

biscuitsandbooks · 23/02/2025 08:49

I wash everything on a 30 minute, 30 degree wash. Ours is actually a washer/dryer and it can easily do a full load in 90 minutes.

Tagyoureit · 23/02/2025 08:50

My machine has a 1 hour cycle which is what I use all the time except for bedding and towels.

1 hour is fine as clothes are not really filthy, they've just been worn a couple of times and need freshening up.
