To be bored by politics

I just don't care. I have an opinion but not informed enough to start a meaningful debate. It's not something I control and I'd rather talk about something else.
Dh goes on about it all the time. Loads of people seem to be constantly doom scrolling and responding to rubbish on Twitter. I just couldn't give a crap any more. Aibu ?

I presume you accept any benefits the government provides?

verycloakanddaggers · 22/02/2025 22:47

That's fine.

I think it impacts life quite a bit so I'm interested.

But you're allowed to ignore it if you want.

rOsie80 · 22/02/2025 22:55

@BlondiePortz interesting. You assume anyone not interested in debating politics is on benefits. Why would you say that? Do you also believe every keyboard warrior on Twitter has a masters degree?

I agree OP

I used to be interested as a young un but increasingly i know i can't influence anything

no idea what will happen next

the international stuff changes so fast i havent got time to keep on top of basics

also i dont want to discuss it. Life is short. I dont want to spend precious free time talking about things that will change tomorrow. Feels endless when i do look at it

Yanbu

I was heavily into politics as a teen/early 20s

I was a 'milifan'

Now I realise that there will never ever be the meaningful change we need to fix society

And I'm free. I don't care. I vote correctly and then that's it. I think about music, tv, fashion, make up, dd and parenting and that's it - and I'm the happiest I've ever been 😄🥰

I think you’ve stated the issue - you’re not well informed so don’t have much to contribute and perhaps don’t realise just how much there is to talk about. If you’re not clued up, you’ll have no idea how much is relevant to your life. In a way, politics is probably one of the most interesting things to talk about. It affects us all and often affects our feelings and lives so much that etiquette experts advise people to avoid it over dinner as there can be huge arguments. I’m the opposite to you: when people say politics or current affairs is boring, I wonder why they actively choose to be ignorant of what’s happening all around them. If I’ve not read the political news for the day, I wonder what I’m missing. Usually it’s loads!

At the news in the moment there’s been loads of things worth learning more about. The debates on adding tax to private school fees and on men being allowed to use women’s toilets and changing rooms are interesting, but I’m not just vaguely aware of what’s happening - I know what key people are saying about it on both sides. It’s good to know I can have conversations about all of this stuff rather than having to say things like, “I had no idea Trump just called the Ukraine president a dictator - what the hell for?!”

You don’t have to even be an expert or know loads. Maybe just look at a few topics that interest you each week.

It's interesting you assumed what benefits meant in this instance, I would say schools and the nhs is a benefit?
