Romanian dog rescue

Preciousmemory · 22/02/2025 17:30

I am in an awful situation that I can find no solution to. Please if any one could give me some advice.
i have rescued a Romanian dog which has turned out so badly.
He arrived 10 days ago and has serious problems I am not able to deal with so am asking if anyone can offer me advice.
The rescue have a policy that I must give him back to be rehomed but are not able to find anyone although it is a short time they are describing him on the advert as a dog that loves humans and children and dogs. A huge part of this is not right I have not tested him with a child but as for people he definitely does not like them , only me.
He attacks my husband in the morning, in the evening when he returns home from work and then randomly at any other time. The attacks are getting progressively worse. But yesterday he met my 80 year old tiny dad for the first time which I had also for the first time put a muzzle on him after 7 days of training with it.
The attack was so ferocious on my dad that he was foaming at the mouth leaping as high as his shoulders to grab him but because he was muzzled there was no damage. my dad immediately left. I despair to think what may have happened otherwise. My daughter turned up shortly after the same thing happened. I was thinking he maybe afraid of men but it seems not.
I have constantly tried to work with the Romanian Rescue which could take months for them to find a suitable home, the only option I have from them is to stick this traumatised dog into a kennel which will cause further damage to him, but I am not able to keep him in my home with this level of aggression.
Dog rescues are full up. I have contacted a few that specifically deal with dog aggression. I do not see how this poor dog can just be homed in a normal family environment as this will happen again. He is a large growing powerful dog that could cause serious damage to a person.
Thank you for reading , this is such an anxious problem that I see no solution to.
I am grateful for any advice possible .

My neighbour adopted a dog from Eastern Europe. It was very aggressive and bit 2 other dogs. If constantly snarled anx jumped up. I was terrified if meeting it.
Eventually it had to be PTS.

Sinkintotheswamp · 22/02/2025 18:46

forest yy, I'm sure a lot of these poor dogs had a better quality as a stray in a pack with other animals. Trafficking them over to the UK is nuts.

OP - I think you need to put the dog to sleep. The rescue will only sugar coat the situation to another family.

In the contract because I have asked for him to be rehomed they have said only they are allowed to handle this and I know longer am the owner. Also in their contract they write that if it does not work out then I have to keep him in my home until they rehome him. Or put him in a kennel which would just make his behaviour even worse and so cruel

This awful Traffiker has basically protected themselves against aggression and having to take the aggressive dog back.

It wants YOU to keep it - Or you to pay for kennels-

While they take on naive people’s money.

It’s a shame they can’t be reported.

Get it PTS rather than passing it on .

As soon as I said that he needed to be rehomed I was told he is no longer my responsibility that they are the owners , they are the ones the chip is registered to so he no longer belongs to me and they are the only one to decide what will happen. This is all in their contract that I am repeatedly being told I am In breach of as I let two of my family come to my house on the 10th day which has put him In a traumatic situation. Despite the daily constant attacks on my husband who he lives with. I very much am getting the blame for being irresponsible yet I have pleaded for help. Sent a video of my husband being attacked to be told for him to give him a high value treat

You kept the dog in your care?
I would have told them to pick it up in an hour. After that hour I would head straight to the vet.

Drylogsonly · 22/02/2025 18:49

The dog needs to be out to sleep. I don’t understand people taking in strays from other countries and having them shilled here when there are so many animals here in need of homes.
I suppose it’s because it’s harder to adopt animals here as the rules are stricter.

shewasasaint · 22/02/2025 18:49

Very cruel and unfair post. And the dog should not be rehomed by OP.

OP, please don't return this dog to the rescue. They've proved they are irresponsible. And please don't rehome him. Have the dog put to sleep by the vet. It will be a kindness to the dog and prevent some other well-meaning family taking him on and being badly hurt.

I know someone who adopted a small dog from Romania. She made huge efforts over quite a period of time but had to have him pts in the end as her child was bitten and she couldn't invite any of his friends to the house. It's a sad situation but that's how it is.

I'd argue that if you're having to pts on welfare grounds (for the dogs or humans welfare, probably both) then that's a different kettle of fish. But I'd still suggest ringing the vets first for advice. If the vet doesn't recommend pts then I'd contact the rescue and say the dog has to leave within 24 hours due to serious aggression. In the mean time, I would not allow the dog outside unless it's muzzled - you said you're not walking it and it can't escape from your garden, but no garden is 100% escape proof and if someone comes in unexpectedly then you need to make sure they will not be attacked. I wish you luck. Its a horrible situation to be in.

If its that aggressive have it put down. Its beyond me why people bring dogs here from abroad when there are plenty of dogs here in shelters already.

Because UK rescues have ridiculously high standards in terms of allowing adoption.

Dolambslikemintsauce · 22/02/2025 18:50

Have him pts.
Tell them he had a seizure and died at the vet. I bet my last dollar the vet would back you up. That poor ddog deserves some peace.. What is sending him back going to do?
I tried it rehome a relatives ddog. A kind mner got him a place in a very reputable rescue. They rehomed him to a woman with a dc. Against my suggestion.. Her dc got bitten on the face. Ddog was sent back. Where he had they told me a nervous breakdown and was pts anyway...

Romanian rescues are strays. Sure, you can get some who are really friendly and good natured, but by and large they are feral animals, not your typical house trained pet. Importing dogs for adoption is crazy.

DeepFatFried · 22/02/2025 18:55

If you call them, tell them you have given him a high value treat as suggested and it worked and he is now calm and friendly and you withdraw your request to have him re-homed, will they re-register the chip to you?

And you can then have him humanely euthanised?

So sorry OP.

This is a true cautionary tale about the ‘Rescue’ service in question that needs to be told far and wide.

oakleaffy · 22/02/2025 18:56

saladandchipp · 22/02/2025 18:17

I'm really sorry to read your posts OP.

Thing is once they're human aggressive (not just reactive) then there's just so much at stake it's kinder to pts.

I say this as someone with naughty reactive rescue dogs. It's no life for anyone with an aggressive dog.

I was bitten by a dog a few years ago and it was awful and traumatic. People would always say 'what if it was a child'. What about me? Why didn't I count. This dog came from nowhere and launched at me. It was awful. Why does my safety somehow matter less than a child - aggressive and unpredictable dogs shouldn't get second chances.

Exactly.
It’s painful to be bitten by even a small dog-

My friend is very good with dogs ( his own are lovely) but he dog sat a Labrador that clearly was unstable, and it went for him.
He still has the scars on his arm.

He said it has actually made him wary around certain dogs as the bite was so fast.

Most dogs love him- I only have to mention his name and my dog puts her head on one side and wags her tail
He doesn’t do treats either!
They love him for who he is -!
Any “treat” goes in bowl at feeding time.

Chuchoter · 22/02/2025 18:56

I have met at least six probably more Romanian rescue dogs that were incorrectly described/not properly tested who have fear based aggression towards men or other dogs.

Each time the owner has been distraught and put in the horrible position of returning the dog, sometimes that's not always possible or having the dog put to sleep as it's both on impossible to rehome them again here because of behavioural problems.

I have rescued many dogs but I would not take on a Romanian street dog.

I have of course met a few that have been fine but they are with people who can dedicate a lot of time in giving them behavioural therapy.

Because UK rescues have ridiculously high standards in terms of allowing adoption.

My son adopted a retired greyhound from a local place and they didn't have ridiculous standards. They also want foster homes so you can see how the dog is before you commit.

He is the sweetest dog imaginable.

God, I'm Romanian, and I don't understand this at all. Stray dogs in Romania are horrible. They traumatised my childhood. I spent every walk to school being terrified I may get attacked.

Do people really think Romanians are heartless shit humans who won't take in perfectly nice dogs? Have you stopped for a second to think why these dogs can't find a family home in their own country? Maybe because people there know they're hopeless and should be put down in the first place?

A dog that vicious needs to be put down. If you give it back and allow whatever dodgy charity you got him from to give it to another family, you are just as irresponsible as they are.

Why can't Romania sort their feral dog problem, by neutering or euthanasia for the most aggressive? They might be horrible to you but were all domestic pets once, abandoned.

To be fair, I adopted my cats from a local rescue and they were better. Some of the larger rescues were insane. My cats are loved and cared for very well but a few rescues wouldn't allow me to have cats because I have children.

whyamiawakestillitssolate · 22/02/2025 19:03

Where people say they have contacts which say they have to give dogs back if they want to rehome - do they regularly check up on dogs and owners? How would they ever know?

This is so interesting hearing the situation from an honest Romanian person.
We haven’t had stray dogs in U.K. for decades
( Thanks to dog wardens)
But there are places around the world where people and especially children are killed by stray dogs.

An aggressive Rottweiler caused a lovely older man to receive amputations after a savage unprovoked attack after a Rottweiler broke free of it’s owner.
He’s lost an arm and a leg.

( U.K.)
Don’t know if it was a foreign dog though.

TyrannasaurusJex · 22/02/2025 19:05

OP, why are you consistently ignoring all of the ABSOLUTELY CORRECT suggestions to have this dangerous animal put to sleep? Are you waiting for him to hurt someone or worse?

Beautyfadesdumbisforever · 22/02/2025 19:09

I am so sorry this had happened to you and like everyone else has said I would PTS.
if the rescue are saying that because of your contact they are now the owner of the dog but are expecting you to keep it until they can find an alternative home it might be worth quoting the dangerous dogs act to them.
A dangerous dog is classed as one that is dangerously out of control if you are worried that it might bite or has bitten someone.
point out it is a criminal offence for the person in charge of the dog to allow it to be dangerously out of control.
They are now claiming ownership and are in charge of the dog they can not force you to keep a dangerous dog in your house.
it might at least speed things up.
make sure you all stay safe and I am really sorry you must have been so pleased and excited to be getting another dog.

TizerorFizz · 22/02/2025 19:10

There is no way a caring dog owner would ever want this dog to go to another family. It’s utterly irresponsible. Seeing what’s it’s done to her DH, it is not safe. Therefore it has to be put down. Who cares what the lying agency says?! Get the dog away from human beings.

If the £££ spent on importing traumatised dogs were instead invested in neutering schemes over there the benefit to animal welfare would be immense.

Please don't take the advice to have the dog put to sleep as you will have a contract with the rescue, they will not respond well to you doing that.

I think you need to be really really firm with the rescue that they need to find a suitable foster or help raise money for the dog to be placed with a paid fosterer or boarding facility temporarily.

Please don't take the advice to have the dog put to sleep as you will have a contract with the rescue, they will not respond well to you doing that.

What is the rescue organisation going to do? Sue the OP? I don't think so. They would have to establish that they had suffered some kind of loss through her actions.

Newdoggo · 22/02/2025 19:11

I have 2 large Romanian Rescues and they are amazing, I followed the advice from the rescue and allowed them each time to decompress following the 3/3/3 rule - 10 days is nothing after the travel and a new environment. The rescue should be available and help as much as possible, also seek out a behaviourist. I know before I adopted my first they outlined everything to help with the transition period, I'm not sure I would have put a muzzle on either of mine within a few days of arrival. I am shocked that the rescue is advertising as safe with children given how nervous the dog is so I can completely understand your reticence to hand it back - I am angry on your behalf. Please see if there are any other rescues willing to help you x
