To think a mattress topper is not really worth it?

I would like to hear opinions on mattress toppers. I have quite a minimalist Japanese-style bed with matching Futon mattress. I feel that it is fine as it is, though maybe just a little too hard possibly (which is no big deal for me). So will a mattress topper make any difference? It would need to be a pretty thin one anyway, otherwise it might end up being bigger than my actual mattress!

I am thinking of ordering one and returning it if I find I do not need it. But I would like to hear the opinions of others first.

We have one, the difference is incredible. Our mattress was expensive compared to most, probably close to £400, it's now 4 years old and you can feel every spring in it. If we didn't have a mattress topper, we'd have to get a new mattress. You can't feel any of the springs and it's so comfortable.

Our mattress topper was from IKEA, probably cost around £60

TonTonMacoute · 22/02/2025 16:45

I don't understand why you are considering buying one OP. What are your reasons?

I guess some people buy them for softness, we bought our lambswool one for temperature regulation, and it works very well for that.

We actually bought it for our old mattress, but we use it on our brand new ridiculously expensive new mattress too.

sevenIsNewEight · 22/02/2025 16:50

I don't think mattress toppers are typically used with futon beds. Not saying that you can't, just that experience of anyone with philosophicaly different bed is of limited applicability for you.

PeterPipper · 22/02/2025 16:51

We bought one when our old mattress was old and bumpy and we couldn't afford a new mattress It meant we could avoid buying a new mattress for another year or two.

BashfulClam · 22/02/2025 17:50

I bought one and it was the best money ever. I had constant neck pain and thought it was posture etc. a week with a memory foam topper and the pain disappeared, it must have been my mattress.

ChompandaGrazia · 22/02/2025 17:53

I have a memory foam topper on my sprung mattress. It makes a huge difference. I got mine from Panda. You get a trial period so nothing to lose.

MIL treated us to one, I can’t remember why.. so I’m not sure what brand it is (I can check if needed) but it changed my life 😂 I absolutely love it. It’s memory foam and nice and thick
We ordered a cheapy one to go on the spare bed which gets used a handful of times a year and mainly by me or DH when he’s ill and snoring and that one is awful 😅 you can feel the springs through it, the mattress desperately needs replacing but it’s not a priority at the mo

I have 2, one on top of the other. I was gifted one and there wasn't anything wrong with the existing so I just doubled up. Incredibly comfortable and cushioning. My mattress is quite old, over 10 years but still OK. It's part sprung part memory foam and the double topper has given it a new lease of life.

Arrggghhhhhh · 22/02/2025 19:24

Not worth it, unless you get a wool one, the wool one I have really helps my hips

JustFeedMeCake · 22/02/2025 19:33

We have an expensive mattress, so yes it's worth it for us, that covered with a mattress cover. We love ours and the mattress is immaculate.

Redcliffe1 · 22/02/2025 19:35

I brought a fairly cheap one for my sons bed as his mattress had got a bit lumpy and it's great - so soft!

Same here. When I got a new mattress, I didn't need the topper any more, but my bed with the old mattress was a lot more comfortable with it.

Every few years I buy the 'teddy' mattress topper from Dunelm, it's only about an inch thick but it stops me feeling the springs and makes my bed so much warmer in winter, I've just bought a new one this past month, they had 50% off so it only cost me £11 for a double. Well worth the money :-)

Oh p.s. I should have mentioned, if you buy one from Dunelm once it's open and out of the bag it's non returnable unless it's faulty

P.p.s. I just looked online and it shows they are out of stock for most sizes, but I know my local store still has them on the shelves

MumChp · 22/02/2025 19:51

We have a great one. Love it.

I have to disagree with that, I have a normal foam one and it's really comfortable. I dont have any hip issues though

AllTheChaos · 22/02/2025 19:56

I have a very firm mattress for my back (orthopaedic and expensive, about £1,200) but then my hip bones dig in and I get bruises, so a memory foam topper is brilliant as it means I get the support of the fancy mattress underneath but the comfort of memory foam.

Well it depends on your mattress I have a really good mattress but sore hips.

Abigaillovesholidays · 22/02/2025 20:00

Like others have said, my mattress was awful but couldn't afford another so thought I'd try a mattress topper and it has made such a difference! No longer need to get a new mattress! Would really recommend. Got mine from amazon was in the region of £90.

PerambulationFrustration · 22/02/2025 20:03

I'm thinking of getting a cooling one because my memory foam mattress makes me too hot.
Would love any recommendations.

AlteredStater · 22/02/2025 20:08

My new mattress was way too hard (and I couldn't exchange it) so I bought a mattress topper and that has helped somewhat! I avoided memory foam as I don't want to overheat.

Onelifeonly · 22/02/2025 20:09

Ours is really thick and comfortable (not memory foam). It makes the bed feel cosy. One side has a brushed surface and the other is smooth and cooler - we turn it over in the warmer months. I don't like feeling the mattress through the sheet - though our mattress is relatively new and also has soft padding.

AlicePottery · 22/02/2025 20:13

I have a really hard futon (by choice), I added one of the more expensive toppers from IKEA and it's great, you still have the hardness and stability of the futon but a thin layer of squish making it cosier.

B1indEye · 22/02/2025 21:09

Clearly I failed to see the depends on the mattress bit of your statement that they aren't worth it 😀

catscalledbeanz · 22/02/2025 22:59

I swear by mine! Our mattress is nearing 20 and it wasn't the best when we bought it ( fiscal constraints meant we buy what we can afford). The springs began to almost injure us about 10 years ago so we got a temp mattress topper whilst we saved for a new mattress- it was so effective that we still have the same mattress (and topper) and keep using the "new mattress fund" for holidays.
