I’ll go first… when I was about 12 or 13 (mid-00s) I signed up to a UK mum/baby forum - I can’t remember what it was called but it was a bit like Mumsnet but way, way smaller, everyone knew everyone - and created a whole fake life and made a load of ‘friends’ on there who were presumably women in their 20s-40s. This was when the internet was a very different place and everyone had their kids’ names and DOBs on ‘tickers’ I think they were called in their signatures. There was minimal anonymity. I had a fake husband and a couple of fake kids with names and back stories and then ‘got pregnant’ and tracked a whole pregnancy and birth. All of my online ‘friends’ were really excited to hear the birth announcement and helped me pick the baby’s name. I made up a fake birth story. There was actually an in-person meet up with all the kids that I was invited along to but obviously I couldn’t go, I pretended that one of my kids was sick.

I still remember some of the names of the women and their kids and think about how old the kids would be now (in their 20s!)

Anyway after 1-2 years, can’t remember exactly how long, a group of them realised I was fake and ‘confronted’ me online. I didn’t confess but deleted my account and never went back.

I had a difficult home life and I think I wanted to imagine the happy family I might have when I grew up. It was a bit of an obsession though and I spent so many hours on there, basically every afternoon and evening after school. I’ve never done anything similar since, my catfishing days were over after that!

Did anyone else do anything similar online as a teenager, pretending to be anyone else or something?

When I was 16 my mum and dad went away for a few days leaving me in charge of my 14 year old sister and her 14 year old friend from school who was staying with us for a few days. Because my mum wasn’t there to drink 60 cups of milky tea a day we had a surplus of milk so we wrote a note to cancel a few days, popped it in a milk bottle, and put it in the porch.

Instead of writing ‘No milk today’ we wrote what we thought was an hilarious poem, the jist of what I can’t remember. The milkman’s son found it and gave it to his mother who then thought the milkman was having an affair with my mother. The whole milk family arrived on our doorstep looking for my mum and we had to explain to them all (and my parents) that we’d written it for fun. I’m 55 now and I’m still mortified when I think of it 😳

Nothing, thank God. The internet didn't exist when I was a teenager.

MayaPinion · 20/02/2025 20:57

Sorry, that had nothing to do with the internet, it it’s still cringe 😬 😂

Baby greenhouse? I wonder if I was catfished by you if so.

Like a previous poster I'm too old to answer your actual question but it's interesting to read why people do stuff like that.

Hopefully your life is a bit happier now

I remember someone like that. Can't remember if it was BGH or UK Parents.

Baby centre? I caught a troll out there who faked a premature birth.

No I don’t think it was baby centre. I think it might not exist any more, I’ve just had a little search online and can’t find it. If I saw the name I’d know it straight away.

I remember the one and it did have the child’s gender and DOB in the signature. I’ll come back to the thread if I remember the name!

Becauseisaidsookay · 20/02/2025 21:05

It was only just starting to come in when I was a teen. I remember only one friend having the dial up thingy and having no real clue what it was. One day our group of friends went online and we were supposedly talking online to some surfer guy I think. I remember us all pretending we were one girl/woman and making her up from the best bits of ourselves 😂 Eg..my brunette hair, friends figure, other friends eye colour, so stupid, but it was fun.
I also remember getting my first mobile phone at around 19, an Erikson flip phone (I think!) it took ages to type out a message and didn’t do much else. I remember a guy (or said he was) messaging me by accident and we got texting and I made up lies about how I was an air stewardess 🤷🏻‍♀️really I was just a bored student

RejoiceandSing · 20/02/2025 21:08

I started reading mn in my mid-teens, didn't make up a fake persona though(or have an account for ages - I'm a much more normal age for it now!). Probably a bit odd for a teenager, but it did teach me a lot, especially about relationships and what's generally considered acceptable, sexual health stuff, different opinions on how to bring up children.

SneakyLilNameChange · 20/02/2025 21:12

I was groomed online age 13/14 or so. Added on MySpace by a ‘friend of a friend’ who looking back was clearly a paedophile. Never met him thank GOD but exposed breasts and was encouraged to masturbate on video cam (there’s was off obviously.)

Ive never told anyone that ever and haven’t thought about it for years. But yeah…not good.

Online didn't exist when I was a teenager. So glad it didn't...do miss the old dial up....drrr drr eeee drrr drr ..

GrandTheftWalrus · 20/02/2025 21:16

We only got internet in my house when I was 18. So 2002. First thing I done was look at rotten.com.

I also used baby centre from the minute I was ttc with my ex until the day after I had my 1st with my now dh. It was weird. I'd went on meet ups etc and I'm still in fb contact with them and they supported me through my divorce etc and cheered me on when getting together with dh and overjoyed when I announced I was pregnant. Posted my birth announcement and for some reason never went back on it!

SnapdragonToadflax · 20/02/2025 21:17

If nothing else, this thread just shows you can't believe anything on the internet!

It didn't exist when I was a teenager, thank fucking god.

verysmellyjelly · 20/02/2025 21:17

I emailed a murderer.

Soitis83 · 20/02/2025 21:18

I used a models picture and somehow ended up talking to Callum Best. I was 15 maybe 16. We exchanged numbers and talked loads. He wanted to meet but I blocked him when it got to that as I wasn't a skinny, adult model. I was a chubby, spotty teen 😂

Username73638 · 20/02/2025 21:18

@ShrimpBoil @Niknakcake nope and nope. It had the word baby in it I’m pretty sure.

@verysmellyjelly wow 🙊

I'm made a 'love website' dedicated to the guy I loved online (barf - I know!) we met in a chatroom 22 years ago. It was like a Myspace page but not quite.

He, in turn, made an entry into the now infamous 'urban dictionary' with an explanation of what my name meant. At the time it wasn't a huge site...

My name still comes up on there as does the 'definition' that he wrote 😂

A couple years after the 'love website', my first proper boyfriend found my page of love dedications and said I was fucking weird ended up dumping me....I hadn't realized those things lasted forever 😂 my friends couldn't stop pissing themselves over it!

DobbyTheHouseElk · 20/02/2025 21:20

There wasn’t internet when I was a teenager, we didn’t even have mobile phones.

I did record the Top 10 off the radio onto a cassette by pressing play and record at the same time though…..

verysmellyjelly · 20/02/2025 21:20

@Username73638 I really regret doing it, but the person in question has now died.

propllop · 20/02/2025 21:21

Had daily chats with an American man called Roger and thought I loved him. Stayed up all night once cos he said he would ring me, we never spoke on the phone 🤣 seems crazy now to think I was so invested.

Packingcube · 20/02/2025 21:22

The internet in it's early days was such a wild place 😆
I was always
18 F London Art student or similar I definitely was not.
Or
Mid 20s teacher from the North. I definitely was not
Had online relationships they used to send me gifts 😆
I distinctly remember an adult version of PayPal I had money pigs 😆
