To be worried about my son’s teeth. TW: photo of teeth!

My 8yo has never lost a tooth. He has a fully grown adult tooth behind his baby tooth on the bottom and the bottom teeth are only slightly wobbly. They’ve been wobbly for a couple of months but don’t show any real signs of coming out. Do I need to let nature take its course or does this warrant a dentist trip? P.s. they need a brush, this is just before bed!

My daughter had this exact set of teeth. She now has the most gorgeous teeth and they're perfectly straight. Teeth tend to sort themselves out when they're ready x

Hi, This is called 'Shark teeth'. Cool name right? It's quite common so don't worry! My son had it and the baby teeth eventually came out. Was your son a late teether?
I personally wouldn't worry as the baby teeth will eventually come out abd the adult teeth will catch up. Try to encourage him to give them a wobble now and again.

Ds had this. The dentist said something like usually adult teeth pushing up cuts/disrupts the root of the baby tooth which is why they get wobbly and come out. Sometimes if the next teeth are slightly out of alignment that doesn't happen. Iirc (was a while ago now) ds was like that for a few weeks before his dentist appointment. Dentist was happy to leave them to come out naturally (was sure they would even if it took a while) or to pull. Ds chose to have them pulled (happened to middle 2 lower incisors at the same time). Wasn't traumatic for him at all.

I think I was leaning towards having them pulled anyway as I was concerned he wouldn't be able to clean the new ones properly.

My daughter's were the same, she didn't lose her 1st tooth until she was 7 & only the front 4 (2 top & 2 bottom) came out. Most of her adult teeth came through wherever they could as the baby teeth were rock solid. She pretty much had a double row top & bottom. She's 11 now & all baby teeth have (finally) gone, she's had to have 8 out at the dentist over the last few years & we're on the orthodontics path for braces.
Get him to the dentist, although they won't do anything but refer you at the moment.

Forgot to say, dentist said there could be a genetic element to it - dh lost his final baby tooth in his late 20s Grin

RIPVPROG · 20/02/2025 19:01

This happened with one of my upper canines I had the baby one pulled, I was older though and I think that followed a period of watch and wait. DS goes to the dentist every six months, when is his next check up due? If it's soon just get it checked then

FuzzyPuffling · 20/02/2025 19:02

My DD still has a couple of baby teeth, and the dentist is now talking about dealing with it.
She's 40.

BooomShakeTheRoom · 20/02/2025 19:03

One of my sons had shark teeth, as soon as the baby teeth fall out, it will realign.

It does strike me as a bit old to not have teeth falling out though, my sons lost their bottom teeth by 6. Do you visit a dentist 6-monthly with him? If so, ask them next time you’re there.

RebeccaRedhat · 20/02/2025 19:05

My daughter is 8 and has only had 1 tooth fall out by itself. 3 my husband has pulled out, and 2 the dental hospital have pulled out. 2 more wobbly but no signs of coming out. It is so common. Her teeth are really wonky, but they'll get fixed with braces when her teeth are (finally) all out.

SallyWD · 20/02/2025 19:06

Very normal. Both my children had this, but their teeth were into place once the baby teeth fell out.

Kittygolightlyy · 20/02/2025 19:08

My daughter had 2 shark teeth, front teeth ! Very cute but the dentist took them out. Much better!

Hankunamatata · 20/02/2025 19:09

Had similar. Chose to pull baby teeth as couldn't clean adult teeth properly

annlee3817 · 20/02/2025 19:17

My 9 year old DD has four like this on the bottom, I've been encouraging her to wobble the baby teeth, dentist wasn't concerned

FilthyforFirth · 20/02/2025 19:18

DS is 7 and has this. Dentist has warned he will 100% need braces (and 'luckily' it is so bad he will get it funded on the NHS!) and likely sooner than later, so defo primary, not secondary. Luckily he has lost 6 so far.

Get DC to fhe dentist asap!

When did he last go to the dentist? If it's a while until his next appointment maybe ask for a check.
