For my 6 and 11 year old to watch a film at the cinema without me

They want to watch dogman and I don't think I can face it. If it was just the 11 year old, I'm thinking this would absolutely be ok. But with the six year old I'm unsure as he might get a bit scared and there's the worry that popcorn is quite a chokeable snack. Both of them just likely to sit and watch the film though. And I'd be next door watching something that doesn't want to make me gouge my eyes out.

No way can you send a 6 year old to the cinema by themselves. Stop being such a selfish parent and sit with them.

Sprogonthetyne · 20/02/2025 08:32

Sorry, I don't think any cinema would let you leave an unattended 6yo.

Justhereforthechristmasthreads · 20/02/2025 08:32

Sorry OP you'll just have to grit your teeth. Your children shouldn't be unsupervised

Smartiepants79 · 20/02/2025 08:32

Absolutely not. You can’t leave your 6 year old alone in the cinema. And you can’t leave your 11 year old in charge of him. Would you leave them at home alone for that length of time?

Winterscoming77 · 20/02/2025 08:33

Get the aisle seat, book a recliner and take a blanket.

Jellycatspyjamas · 20/02/2025 08:34

If you’re watching another movie, how would they find you if they needed you? Sometimes we just need to grit our teeth with kids movies - if you really feel you can’t stand it, wait til the movie is on a streaming service and let them watch at home.

whatsgoingon2024 · 20/02/2025 08:34

Sorry but no, leaving the 6 yr old under the 11 yrs old supervision isn’t reasonable. It’s not ok for the 11yr old to be responsible. The reasons you’re quoting just reinforce that. You either go and suck it up or don’t take them and wait for it to come out when you can watch at home. I have walked out of a cinema a few times when my kids have struggled, it’s annoying but part of the job.

Favouritefruits · 20/02/2025 08:34

Just suck it up and go and watch it, it was crap and uninteresting but it’s not even two hours long. Have a nap

femfemlicious · 20/02/2025 08:35

You can sit at the back and watch something else on your phone😁

stanleypops66 · 20/02/2025 08:35

My 11 year old and 8 year old niece has gone into the cinema on their own. I didn't buy a ticket but was able to sit outside the theatre and do some work on my laptop.

Greenwallpinkwall · 20/02/2025 08:35

Another self centred parent

Westfacing · 20/02/2025 08:35

The cinema won't allow it.

I sat though many terrible films with my children and then grandchildren - sometimes you just have to do what yer have to do!

crappymeal · 20/02/2025 08:36

You have to go with them while they're still little.

I took the kids to see dog man the other day, I've seen worse.

Newnamesameme · 20/02/2025 08:36

Do you think all of the adults who go to see Dogman are doing it because they're huge fans? 😂 we go because it's part of being a parent, suck it up

Lovelysummerdays · 20/02/2025 08:36

My kids have been going into the cinema since they were about 7 with an older sibling. Local cinema is tiny just one screen so I sit in the cafe and they go watch minions or whatever. They know where I am, they know where loos are. It feels very safe. I’m not sure I’d go and see something else though.

I was really hoping someone would say the film was actually ok to watch.

I've seen it. It's quite funny. And the style is a bit different.

Just go. It's your job to make your children happy

StopStartStop · 20/02/2025 08:37

Neither an eleven year old nor a six year old, and not two of them together, should be in a cinema without adult supervision.

I am sixty-seven years old. Even in my childhood, we did not go to the cinema without parents because cinemas were hangouts for 'bad men'.

Ddakji · 20/02/2025 08:39

Depends on the kids but on the face of it I think it’s probably fine as you’ll be in the cinema. Is it a big cinema, or are the different screens close to each other?

mikado1 · 20/02/2025 08:39

YABU OP.

But to pp above, we defining without parents at 11. It's the 11yo with a 6yo that's the issue imo.

Adhikv · 20/02/2025 08:40

The film isn’t awful; sometimes cinema trips like this are a good opportunity to just let my mind wander I find and think of ideas for birthday presents, holidays etc

Moonshine5 · 20/02/2025 08:40

Sprogonthetyne · 20/02/2025 08:32

Sorry, I don't think any cinema would let you leave an unattended 6yo.

Plus you never know who is in the cinema with them.

DazedDragon · 20/02/2025 08:40

Welcome to parenting!

Send their dad with them instead. Or pay for a ticket for another grownup to go!

crumblingschools · 20/02/2025 08:40

Fine for the 11yo but not 6yo. I’m assuming some cinemas wouldn’t allow this.

I slept through parts of many children’s films when DC were young

This! I'm off to the cinema today for a wee nap
