Pretty much it in the title. What is the easiest thing to buy/invest in for novices?

Stocks and shares ISA

OldGothsFadeToGrey · 19/02/2025 16:44

Premium bonds

Premium bonds after paying off any debt that's t interest free

bridgetreilly · 19/02/2025 16:47

For me, that would be my next car and other rainy day fund. So it would go in an easy access savings account, with some in an ISA.

MaryGreenhill · 19/02/2025 16:47

Not interested free

Topseyt123 · 19/02/2025 16:53

I'd invest in a stocks and shares ISA too, after clearing any debt as necessary first (like credit cards, or other stuff that is high interest or costly).

An education. @maria2bela1

okydokethen · 19/02/2025 17:22

I'd pay off credit cards and overdraft and get dental work done.

VolcanoJapan · 19/02/2025 17:24

Pay off debts first.

Rainy day easy access fund next.

Stocks and shares isa.

A small treat to remember the person by.

TwentyKittens · 19/02/2025 17:27

Fixed rate high interest time-limited bonds.

19lottie82 · 19/02/2025 17:27

Pay off debts then invest in a stocks and shares ISA

MaybeItWasMe · 19/02/2025 17:30

Premium bonds.

Sockmate123 · 19/02/2025 17:30

I would split 3 ways
Save/invest
Holiday/fun money
Home improvement

That way you can say that your loved one helped you make lovely memories/upgrade bathroom whatever

AlternativeView · 19/02/2025 17:30

As above stocks and shares isa.

potatopaws · 19/02/2025 17:54

If it was me, I’d use it to overpay the mortgage.

DoYouReally · 19/02/2025 18:11

I would add it to my pension.

Boring but practical.

Premium bonds

Premium bonds have just dropped their return rate so I’d go investment ISA if you already have other savings or shop around for a fixed term savings bond if you don’t have any other savings

snoopyfanaccountant · 19/02/2025 18:22

I inherited a sum a bit larger than that a couple of years ago. On the advice of a financial advisor I maxed out my pension contributions for the year and maxed out my ISA allowance for the year. I was in the fortunate position of being debt and mortgage free or clearing some of that would have been my priority.

Premium Bonds

Notsuchafattynow · 19/02/2025 18:24

My stocks and shares isa is performing at 14% and is tax free.
20k is returning 2.8k so far in 9 months.

My cash isa is performing at a fixed 4.6 % and is tax free
20k is going to return 1.4k at the end of the financial year.

My full holding Premium bonds are returning less than 4% and they are tax free.

I'd recommend out of those 3, tax free options the stocks and shares isa, particularly if you plan to leave the money for a good few years.

Ilovelowry · 19/02/2025 18:24

Give it to DC for university fees.

But if that wasn't a consideration I'd buy a lovely piece of jewellery.

Notsuchafattynow · 19/02/2025 18:27

I'm planning on moving out of PBs as the returns are so dire into S&S isa.

Used to regularly win over £300 a month but lucky to get £100 last couple of months.

Cookiesandcandies · 19/02/2025 18:28

Cash ISA

To be fair it’s not a return rate, it’s a prize fund. Might win a million. Might win nothing. Still have my money at the end of it. My personal return rate over the last few years is about 8%, so obviously I’m positive about them.

I don’t have masses in. About 3k up until last month when I was able to put an unexpected extra 5k in.
