Why do people need to shout on their phones when talking in a different language

It happens here quite often. Plus when on a foreign holiday, I hear the locals shout on their phones.

They're probably talking to Brits abroad, who speak louder and slower to non-English speakers.

Wishingplenty · 19/02/2025 12:31

The foreigners that are constantly on Facetime in supermarkets and shops are my bugbear.

thedogatethecattreats · 19/02/2025 12:31

many reason

because they talk loud
because someone is in a busy place and can't hear
because you don't understand so you focus on the noise level instead of the content

As long as they're not in the train or underneath my windows, I don't think I really notice.

but the locals are fine? 😂

GrandHighPoohbah · 19/02/2025 12:35

You probably just notice it at home more because you're not used to the sound of the language. Abroad, sure, some cultures are louder and more expressive than others so the people tend to speak louder.

Batmanisaplaceinturkey · 19/02/2025 12:36

Your ears are inflating the volume because you don't like it. They are probably speaking at the same volume as English speakers.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 19/02/2025 12:38

My husband insists on shouting at FIL on faceTime, they speak the same language but he seems to think that because he's several thousand miles away he needs to shout as FaceTime wont be able to manage the distance.

ohtowinthelottery · 19/02/2025 12:43

I think some nationalities just talk louder and are more animated when they talk, even when not on their phones.
I have a Portuguese neighbour and she never speaks quietly!
Having travelled extensively in Europe , I think the same applies to many Europeans.

arcticpandas · 19/02/2025 12:58

I hate it when they go on talking loudly at buses etc. Teens do from any country but adults I overhear are often talking Italian or Arabic.

Where is "here", @Mokel ?

I don't mean your exact street or district, but roughly whereabouts are you? Is this in the UK?

Squirrelseatcake · 19/02/2025 13:01

people shout into the phone for all sorts of reasons. I doubt they purely shout because they speak in a different language.

When you are on hol, locals speak presumably the local language and not a foreign one. Maybe holiday in the UK where you can minimise encounters with folks from different countries...🤷

East Midlands. Large pockets of Asian and European communities.

I agree. This thread is just going to yank all the chains of the xenophobes.

Edited

Or move to an area of the UK where you don't have to be in the vicinity of all these pesky non English speaking people. 🙄

I expect people will soon be claiming the country is full of boat people talking on their free phones.

Lol my partner is one of those people.

dizzydizzydizzy · 19/02/2025 13:28

OP, you know that making sweeping generalizations is racist, right? A few weeks ago, I was in my local cafe with one other customer, who I slightly know because we are both regulars. She is definitely British and had a very loud 40-minute FaceTime call in English with her son in Australia. It was extremely irritating. I was trying to read my book and enjoy some peace and quiet.

Goldengamer · 19/02/2025 13:34

Not so much foreigners but attention seekers who shout in their phones in Supermarkets. My job is a demonstrator in supermarkets so I do a fair bit of people watching while I’m standing around and if it’s not a builder moaning about a job, it’s a woman shouting at her ex about the ‘kids’ or even as I had the other day, a man going on about about how he had paid a bill with his card , it had declined so it wasn’t working properly as he had plenty of money , everyone in the supermarket must of heard …..it’s commonplace and such a cringe . You just want to tell them to shut up !

I'm not xenophobic but that is one of mine too. It's usually in somewhere like Savers where I've popped in to buy something like Germolene only to find someone regaling the wonders of themselves shopping in the UK and blocking my way.

I'm assuming they are foreign because I don't think anyone else would choose to facetime from a bog standard shop in a crappy high street.

I'd probably find a similar shop in a different continent absolutely fascinating.

ilovesooty · 19/02/2025 13:38

"I'm not xenophobic but..." 🤣

yakamoza · 19/02/2025 13:38

Why do people need to shout when talking on the phone full stop? On my train commute to and from work, I hear plenty of locals letting the entire train know what they are planning to have for dinner, what was discussed in their work meetings or when they want to be picked up from the station.

UpMyself · 19/02/2025 13:59

I'm not xenophobic @ilovesooty , so I don't understand why you needed to comment in such a piss-taking manner.

curiouscat1987 · 19/02/2025 14:04

Some languages are naturally 'shouty' and angry sounding. Cantonese can sound like this for example. And arabic!

JacquesHarlow · 19/02/2025 14:30

Mokel · 19/02/2025 13:04

You need to move to a rural corner of Wales, @Mokel

All White British people there, sounds idyllic for you....

...

... until October 2025 when you'll need to post to discuss large pockets of Welsh speakers shouting on their phones talking in a different language :-)

UpMyself · 19/02/2025 14:55

@JacquesHarlow , but they'll be shouting in Welsh, and not facetiming because the signal will be crap.
