He won't just get it because he's deaf. Like all other disabilities you only get things like DLA if it has a significant impact on his life. Things like needing assistance to do things and go places.

If you contact them they might be able to tell you how far along his application is. Mine certainly took nothing like 20 weeks for my first application

RoastDinnerSmellsNice · 19/02/2025 01:02

I think you're confused OP, as they don't do DLA anymore, has he applied for some other benefit. I'm also wondering why you think that being deaf in only one ear would entitle him to any benefits, as my DD is deaf in both ears, wears hearing aids, and works full time??

Spring2Action · 19/02/2025 01:07

I'd be surprised if being deaf in one ear would count for disability benefit.

Internetwanderer · 19/02/2025 01:10

I'd also be surprised if just being deaf in one ear led to qualifying for DLA....but just to correct the previous post, DLA still exists for under 16 year old.

DLA is still active for under 16s. Only 16+ has it changed to PIP.

ChaosAndToast · 19/02/2025 01:15

DLA definitely does exist and it's taking around 20-25 weeks for new claims to be looked at - some are being looked at sooner.

The disability is almost irrelevant when it comes to DLA as it's all based around care needs so it would be how being deaf in one ear would affect your child and how much more looking after hed need than a child his age without disabilities.

I of course haven't read your application and don't know how your son is affected however on the face of it I'm not sure how being deaf in one ear would quality DLA really but you'll just have to wait until they make a decision.

fedup1212 · 19/02/2025 01:22

It's not to do with a particular diagnosis as such more about the extra care they need and whether it's above what is required for your typical child the same age.

They are looking at October claims currently so you should hear very soon.

DLA has not been stopped and is still available for those under 16.

HoobleDooble · 19/02/2025 01:24

It took about 4 months for them to get back to me about my DS. If your application is successful you'll receive a back payment from the time you applied.

Conxis · 19/02/2025 02:13

Your DS needs to have care needs due to his deafness.
What normal daily activities can he not do/need help with due to his deafness?
You also really need to provide evidence from health professionals, school etc of what his additional needs are to be successful in a claim

Zanatdy · 19/02/2025 03:50

DLA still exists for children under 16. I would be surprised if he qualified for being deaf. As others have said, it’s not the condition per se, but the way it impacts on his life.

Phillipa12 · 19/02/2025 05:25

Depending on how old your son is and how it impacts his life will depend on if he qualifies. My son has bilateral moderate deafness and he did qualify for DLA up untill he was 5, after that his deafness although it impacts his life, it's not significant enough, as in hearing aids are not pulled out frequently, or a chew toy etc. This was over 10 years ago now so criteria could have changed.

Disability benefits are not out-of-work benefits. You can work and still qualify for them because you have extra care needs.

SpanThatWorld · 19/02/2025 06:59

Children do get DLA for deafness but it is usually for bilateral deafness rather than single sided.

DoAWheelie · 19/02/2025 07:07

I had DLA for being deaf as a child but it was bilateral rather than one sided.

It's quite hard to get though and I wouldn't expect to receive anything unless you had someone helping you fill out the form.

The actual diagnosis doesn't really matter for disability benefits, only how it actually affects your day to day life. For me I had severely delayed speech (first words at 3.5) and needed extra supervision when outside as I had no awareness of dangers of cars etc. Unfortunately this resulted in me being hit causing a permanent spinal injury so that formed part of the DLA claim once I was 8 years and onwards so I only had the "deaf only" claim active between 2 and 8 years old. I'm unsure if it would have been enough once I'd started to gain language and was able to move into mainstream school.

Children under 16 still get DLA but yes being deaf in one ear is unlikely to get an award unless it has significant impact on the child.

trainermush · 19/02/2025 07:16

DLA exists and your dc might be eligible

Showerflowers · 19/02/2025 07:57

I don't believe this is a genuine post. It smacks of being a post that will encourage benefit bashing.

I'm not sure I'm on various DLA Facebook groups and people put in claims for the most tenuous of reasons sometimes
