Going on holiday with in-laws without kids

So I can't tell if this is weird or not, my sister is off on a ten day holiday with her husband and her in-laws for a couples holiday.

Don't get me wrong I can understand family holidays but her DH has several siblings and it's only the pair of them going, none of his siblings. Also understand holidays with grandparents but they were only married last year and no kids yet!

Has anyone else done this? I can't understand why she wouldn't just go on holiday with her DH.

YABU - Couples holidays with your in-laws sounds amazing
YANBU - It's not a holiday if your in-laws are there

Me and my DH went on loads of holidays with my parents before we had kids. Didn’t think it was weird at all. I have two siblings who never came.

We go on holidays with the in laws, our kids are adults now but would have gone before too. They are good company and I enjoy spending time with them.

We’ve been on holiday with the in laws but with and without the kids. They unfortunately didn’t pay for us either.

The main reason for us. Is they won’t go abroad alone so we sometimes invite them along with us. I didn’t realise this was weird.

I’ve been on holidays several times with adult DC and their partners. No grandchildren.

Really enjoyable.

Hubs and I have been on multiple holidays with my parents and my sister/her hubs. We're both childfree and love these holidays.

We've done some short breaks with my in laws, both before and after SIL had our neice. We enjoy those too. I really love my in-laws laws and the main reason we haven't done proper holidays with them is not wanting to pay school holiday prices! Plus they like to so AI and we don't, so it's a waste of money for us.

When neice gets older, hopefully we can do longer trips with them.

None of this is weird if you like the people you're going away with.

Depends how well they get on and how much time they intend to spend together on the trip, surely?

I wouldn’t go away with anyone for 10 days, personally, even my best friends. But I don’t think it’s weird if other people do.

DP and I have twice been away for four or five days with my parents - my parents were staying in an apartment for two weeks and we flew out for five days and stayed with them. We didn’t have to pay anything for the accommodation and they were happy for us to use their hire car. We did different things during the day and just saw each other in the evenings. DP still talks about what a lovely time he had! But he’s always liked my parents and they’re not clingy or intrusive types.

I invite my mother in law on hols with us, but not her husband (grumpy old man syndrome). We have a great time.

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 18/02/2025 16:21

You’re looking for problems where they’re aren’t any. 4 adults who enjoy each others company go on holiday- not much of a headline!

RaspberryBeretxx · 18/02/2025 16:22

I thought you meant they were leaving kids at home which seemed strange. But I think, given they don't have any kids yet, it's nice if they all get on and why not holiday together? I get on well with my parents and would do this if I didn't have kids (although not sure DP would be on board!).

Jom222 · 18/02/2025 16:27

not everyone's in law are like my late FIL's 2nd wife, the devil incarnate. Its refreshing to hear of someone actually wanting to spend time away with their in laws.

Also as someone already commented, in laws almost certainly paid for the trip.

Samung · 18/02/2025 16:30

Nice that they all appear to enjoy each other's company enough to do that. It's cynical to think that this automatically means the PIL's are paying. Maybe everyone just thinks it will be fun.

muchadoaboutnuttin · 18/02/2025 19:47

I've done this with in laws - we had a great time!
