Bus fare costs

RedDeer · 17/02/2025 21:21

AIBU in that the cost of bus fares are to high.

For context I took my 2 DDs to the cinema today as its half term here. And it cost me £18 return to do a 20 min round trip.
The bust cost more than the cinema tickets themselves.

My husband had the car for work so it wasn't an option to use it, I'm shocked as it wouldn't cost anywhere near that price in the car.

I thought bus fares were capped, but had gone up to £3 every journey, however far you're going?
Edited to say, yes, so that would be right! £6 each there and back!

Needmorelego · 17/02/2025 21:59

Definitely check the bus companies website before you travel next time.
If you bought 3 x singles there, and 3 x singles back that's £6 each (unusual for children to be the same price - but some bus companies do that) - but return tickets or "day riders" usually work out cheaper.
I travel on lots of different buses all over the country and prices vary but to be honest £6 per person (there and back) sounds normal and not overly expensive.

RedDeer · 17/02/2025 21:59

I've just looked up the cost of a day rider ticket and it would have been £24 for the 3 of us.

Edited

That's what the OP paid. £3 (×3) there, £3 (×3) back. So £18 total.
(sorry....posted before your edit)

OP, you obviously don't you the bus very often! As a result you didn't as so you didn't get. In this case you didn't ask for a day ticket which would have been cheaper than two singles (just like the trains) or better still a family day ticket.

Dayriders are sometimes more expensive depending on how far geography they cover.

That's London only.

I pay £2 for any journey in Greater Manchester.

I believe she means total. Not each.

London is cheaper.
It's always been cheaper than the £2/£3 cap and London children go free.

Even for all 3 of them that's unusually high for one adult and two children. Especially in half term when many bus companies do even cheaper rates for families.

£8 each.
If the Dayrider covers a large area (ie the whole of a town plus several surrounding villages and the next town over) £8 sounds fairly normal.

Yes £10 for me and £7 each for DD.

Don't they have a family group ticket?

It’s free for kids in London! I’m completely shocked at those prices. It wouldn’t even cost me nearly as much to get the tube across to the other side of London with two kids.

scanni · 17/02/2025 22:09

@ProudDada

That's London only.

It was never London. Buses are not even £2 there.

Bloom15 · 17/02/2025 22:09

It's £2 per adult here (Liverpool) and £1.30 per child

Needmorelego · 17/02/2025 22:10

TwentyTwentyFive · 17/02/2025 22:07

Not all bus companies do.

Bloom15 · 17/02/2025 22:10

TartanMammy · 17/02/2025 21:33

Children travel for free don't they?

Only under 5 here (Liverpool)

100PercentFaithful · 17/02/2025 22:11

Fares here are capped at £3 a trip which is great value. They used to be £6 previously.

TwentyTwentyFive · 17/02/2025 22:12

Needmorelego · 17/02/2025 22:10

Not all bus companies do.

I appreciate that but most do some form of family ticket especially in holidays.

BobnLen · 17/02/2025 22:17

OK price for adult but expensive for DC fares.

RedDeer · 17/02/2025 22:19

It looks like I happen to live in one of the more expensive bus company areas. (Stagecoach) no discounts for children or school holidays either or return tickets not available either. From what I can tell from their website. I put in my journey to see my ticket options.

Of all the bus journeys I have done over the years (gazillions) I've not come across any that do specific family tickets in school holidays.
Many do family or group tickets but they run all the time. Not just school holidays. School holiday dates vary so much between different counties and towns (even schools in the same town...) that logistically that would be a nightmare to do.

EleanorReally · 17/02/2025 22:20

here you can get a day rider which is cheaper
and often in the holidays children travel free
