To ask for for archive TV documentary sources?

So I’ve recently discovered BBC Archives on YouTube which is a wealth of historical and oh my god did they really do that then - and in my lifetime!

Highlights - department store at Christmas 1964 (think Fenwicks) with creepy Father Christmas, a fashion meeting for a blow out on flammable wigs, and also in 1974 a (standout) telly interview with a very young, incredibly foxy and good looking Sir David Attenborough.

Can anyone recommend any other historical documentary places to watch before I milk the BBC Archives dry??

Have you looked at the archives section on BBC iPlayer?
Apologies if it's the exact same thing as that which you found on YouTube, however, I stumbled upon the archives section one day by chance and have a list as long as my arm of things I'd like to watch.

Snooks1971 · 17/02/2025 20:05

Ooh no @lashy I haven’t! How stupid of me! Doh - thank you I will look now!

Talking Pictures TV. If you go to the channel and press the red button, you can find their documentaries. The Look at Life series is really good.
I also love The Footage Detectives on that channel. They unearth some really interesting footage.

ITN has an archive on Youtube.

That’s great thankyou! I love this stuff but think I had hit a wall with where to search. There’s a harrowing (compared to how we parent these days) documentary on YouTube about boarding schools in the 80s. It piqued my interest.

Are you ok with longer documentaries or do you prefer shorter clips?

Both actually thank you. Longer at weekends but shorter during the week after work when I’m knackered.

There's some fascinating stuff here:

Nitgel · 17/02/2025 21:24

Was going to say bfi player too. I wish the bbc archive was bigger on the iplayer.

Ok this is going to sound snarky but it isn’t, I promise.

If you put old documentaries or vintage documentaries into Youtube you’ll find playlists of them, some with literally hundreds of them. It’s worth looking through the playlists.

I’ll link to a few here.

There are some good archive documentaries on this channel.

Also check out Thames Tv You may have to scroll past a lot of old stock footage clips but they have a lot of good clips in there too. It might be worth looking at their playlists to make it easier.

If you haven’t seen this documentary, from 1994, apparently it’s a must watch. It’s about hairdressers in Blackpool.

I haven’t seen it yet but it was very popular on MN

notnorman · 17/02/2025 22:23

I love watching pathe reels

Snooks1971 · 18/02/2025 18:08
