To be shocked watching back kids movies from my childhood with DD

Picklepower · 17/02/2025 17:10

DD is 6 and we watch quite a few films together, mixture of old and new. Last Halloween I was so excited to watch a film from my childhood, decided against hocus pocus but went with Casper. Well, turns out not once but TWICE Eric idle's character shouts BITCH at Carrigan. (She's is tbf but a bit much for a Pg film).

Just sat down to watch Charlie and the chocolate factory (from 2005!) and mike teevee says 'even a retard could figure it out'. What the hell!

Any other corkers you've come across watching back your childhood films?

It’s a PG and still is.

the 12 classification didn’t even exist till 1989 and has never applied to Grease

You are right PG did not exist.
The ratings were U, A, AA and X.

Grease was given an A category which meant children from 5 years old could legally see the film, but it was not recommended viewing for anyone under 14 years of age.

That was a product of its time though. It's one of my favourite ever films. I think the message in it goes over most people's heads, they just assume it's some disco dancing movie when it's so much more than that - it's about escapism from the dead end life and fucked up place New York was in the 70s, with its racism, sexism, homophobia, violence etc. It was always meant to be a dark movie, and definitely not for kids.

Yeah, I'm not sure how that translates into it hasn't "aged well". It's a quite nice film about a dark subject that it treats realistically.

Reading threads like this my impression is a lot of people don't want bad things to happen in films unless the villain is cartoonishly 100% a baddie, and is punished by getting struck by lightening or something.

Chesticov · 19/02/2025 07:18

@Washinghanginginthesun thank you yes that's a good point!

Grease prompted me to ask my mum what a virgin was when I was about 5

Why were you watching it at 5 years old?

They were of their time. Things have moved on. 😊

This country is regressing into Victorian times.
How uptight some are. Should we be allowing women to work in case they are exposed to swearing? Should we allow men to see our ankles?
It's rather pathetically sad

wizzbitt · 19/02/2025 07:52

My DS and friend watched the original Ghostbusters while friend was playing over. They were about 7. I did check with the mum and she said there was a suspect scene with Sigourney Weaver but on the whole she was happy for him to watch it. There was a bit of swearing here and there but the scene the mum was referring to was when Weaver's character gets possessed and is writhing about in a black negligee demanding that Bill Murray's character is "in" her! 🤦🏿‍♀️😂 Thankfully it went right over the boys' head!
My DP is desperate to get DS to see films that he enjoyed as a child. I think they also started on Trains, Planes and Automobiles but the swearing was a bit much. He also tried The Woman in Black when DS was about 8/9 and the poor boy was traumatised! He also wanted him to watch Trading Places - I think I watched this when I was in junior school 😳 - my mum wasn't that fussed with ratings but I put my foot down with that one. I haven't seen it for years, I wonder if it's aged well - I doubt it! Now we tend to stick with anime - although some are highly sexualised!
My DP has also suggested Grease but he's not allowed to suggest films anymore 😂

wizzbitt · 19/02/2025 08:15

Also, I remember I sent my little brother (around 11 I think) to go and rent The Lost Boys for me from the local video shop (was called Marchesi). They called the house to check with me if it was ok. Of course I said yes! 😂 The answer would have been very different had my parents answered!

Made the mistake of trying to watch Weird Science with 11yo the other week.

I'd forgotten how rude it was!

Yes. I watched this around 11 and loved it!
Tried to watch it with my class of Year 8s a few years ago and had to turn if off! 😳

YDBear · 19/02/2025 08:27

We have been sneering at Dr Bowdler for well over a century. I expect that 50 years hence the "new prudishness" will face a similar fate.

Chesticov · 19/02/2025 08:30

It's funny how we forget how much things have moved on until we watch an old tv programme or film.

I guess in the past things also changed but a lot is just forgotten with each passing generation. Whereas we can see for ourselves!

I was considering Ferris Bueller's Day off for my teen daughter as I loved this film when I was her age. I think I might need to do a bit of research before we sit down to watch though. 😂

Lazycatlover · 19/02/2025 09:03

My generation's swamp scene (which dw its traumatised those of is who have seen it too) is the ant dying in honey i shrunk the kids 😂

Lazycatlover · 19/02/2025 09:07

I hate grease with a passion not only is it not apprpraite the storyline and plotholes make absolutely no sense

My youngest is now a teenager (13) and it’s a minefield sitting down to watch some of the old classics with him.
I went for a safe option the other night, trains planes and automobiles - all fine pretty much until Steve Martin goes off on a rampage and uses the word fucking about 20 times in a minute 😂
to be fair I don’t mind the odd bit of swearing in stuff and it was a 15 so my own fault!
But I do agree, and if anyone has any recommendations for any old classics to watch with nothing too hardcore I’m all ears.

I'm sure your 13 year old hears worse in the playground every school day.

Mama2many73 · 19/02/2025 09:17

Hhostbuster where Dan ackroyd is lying on a bed and the ghost pulls out his belt , cue Dan's 'orgasm' face. My son watched that loads of times and I couldn't remember it.

I hated Grease AND Dirty Dancing although Dirty dancing has an amazing soundtrack, but they both made me feel uncomfortable watching them and that's when I was a teenager.

Edited to add . The attempted rape in robin Hood Prince of Thieves was awful and pretty much destroyed the film for me. I don't think I've watched it since (now in my 50s) just really uncomfortable and felt a bit weird to be watching it, I don't think it was needed, did nothing for the film, we knew he was a shit!

JudgeJ · 19/02/2025 09:29

We have all turned out alright after watching all of these films haven’t we... so what makes you now think our kids won’t?

Exactly! I honestly think that many on here rewatch what they watched years ago, finding every tiny 'fault' to complain about, seeking to boost their perfect mummy credentials.

Goonies not goodies.

I saw this film for the first time when i was about 13 with my 6 year old cousin, he was asking me what it said between me crying with laughter (the only thing i actually did laugh at that movie is boring) as i understood. I told him that he was telling her where the socks and pants go.

It's still a great film. Mine first watched it in early teens and loved it.

Try Watership Down op, you'll realise how tame your previous watches have been then 😂

*Still shudder at WSD, decades later. Anyone else?

Was my fave film when young(not sure what that says about me!)
I watched the plague dogs and now THAT traumatised me

I watched Snow White (the original animated Disney version) with my 3yo. How did I not remember the bit about the Queen requesting her heart in a box as evidence of her death or when she's cakling about Snow White being buried alive 🤔

Oh my goodness yes this movie is dark! 😂 I haven’t checked but my money is on it having been made for adults to watch, rather than children . Cartoons were so new then

Washinghanginginthesun · 19/02/2025 11:44

Most old fairytales are very dark. They were stories for adults. The Grimm’s original of Snow White had the wicked stepmother made to wear red-hot iron shoes and dance until she died. Cinderella’s beautiful but wicked stepsisters cut off their toes and heel and had their eyes pecked out by crows (I think that bit was in ‘Into the Woods’).

He put in a lot of effort training for track and getting his letter in it . He actually put in way more sustained effort to change than Sandy . Probably ecause he he was the one that needed to! Sandy just needed to relax a bit

It might have been because his whole personality involved being a dick. But the change only last for 2.5 seconds so we'll never know.

Edited

DD and her friend used to recite Misery word for word.
DD did a brilliant Kathy Bates impression 😂
They were about 13

One of my favourite films. There are only really 2 nasty scenes, even though it's an 18. The whole tone of the film is quite menacing though. I watched it with dd1 when she was around 14 though we both hid our eyes at the ankle scene! She wanted to watch it, along with The Others when she found out it was a 12, and she was...12. I did warn her it was a bit disturbing in parts

I'm still working on watching Misery with dd2 (16), she's a little more sensitive & declared "it's an 18 so I won't watch it until I'm 18!"
