I’m trying to sort a family holiday for next year, either summer or October half term. I’ve got two primary aged children who are very adventurous/active. We’ve done lots of Europe, doing Africa next year and I’ve done enough Caribbean/Bahamas to know it’s somewhere I’d want to go without them 😝 so spam me with your favourite family holidays. What was a massive hit? I’d prefer not to travel too far (nothing over 8 hours if possible) but happy to drive/ship/plane

We've done the Austrian alps the last two years which was brilliant. Loads to do- especially outdoors. Lots of places have regional cards that save you so much money on activities so worth doing your research.

UK wise, we love the lake district and go regularly. Bowness/Grasmere/Keswick are all good bases to explore from. Again, lots to do, especially if you enjoy the outdoors.

Completely agree, look at the Austrian Alps. Activities at the top of every mountain and the lifts are included in most places and then you just walk down, stopping off on the way at the many log cabins for a beer and a pizza etc. heaven!

@Kindnesscostsnothingtryit how do you go about booking this kind of holiday? I’ve got too used to package holiday easy booking but would love to visit the alps.

We self drive and go on the Eurotunnel and book the hotel direct with the owner, been doing it for years. Or, you could book through Ingham's and fly. We always take our dog as she loves the walks and all restaurants take dogs. Look at Hinterglemm, it's an amazing place for a family.

Cape Town with a car, lots of days out and then an hour or two in the hotel pool before going out to dinner.

Rio de Janeiro and Iguassa Falls staying at an eco place in Argentina.

Twin Center in St Lucia, lots of days out and eating out locally for the first half and then chilling at an all inclusive hotel for the second half.

Cuba, Havana and a beach resort, similar to St Lucia but the other way around.

A few days in LA visiting Disney etc and then a cruise to the Pacific side of Mexico. We all loved this trip as it felt so far away and the excursions we did were very good.

Disney cruise around the Med, amazing as we saw so many sights plus we loved the ship.

An Adriatic cruise followed by a week in Turkey in an all inclusive hotel with good animation. We also went out every other day on boat trips, to a beach club, snorkelling etc.

Baltic cruise, very cool to see so many different countries especially St Petersburg.

Egypt, lovely mix of chilling and fabulous days out see Pyramids, camels, boat trips.

Atlantis the Palm in Dubai, we loved the hotel and the water part and also the days out were really interesting. I actually went back again with just my DH as I enjoyed it so much.

Florida isn’t in my top 10 or even 20, I’m not really sure why.

I have also taken my DC on lots of other cruises and to lots of all inclusive resorts and honestly have never had a bad trip. I do like twin Center holidays so for example staying at a simple Spanish hotel and then an all singing all dancing cruise from Barcelona.

Thanks everyone! I really like the idea of Egypt but I’d want to see the pyramids etc. is that possible to travel from the more beachy parts? I’ve heard it can be a bit dangerous in the past?

@whycantibeselfishforonce we actually did the virtuosa to Norway last year. I was very seasick, but I’ve cruised before and not been ill so I’m blaming the storm we sailed through! I like cruising in general, I’ve been looking at the Disney crusies that are being released today, but they’re so expensive!

You can fly from the beach resorts to Cairo to see the Pyramids. It’s a long day and one of my family’s best days ever.

Iceland - so beautiful and with plenty of activities
Kinderhotels (locations in German, Italian and Austrian Alps) - great kids activities so you can get time on your own, plus so much stuff to do as a family.

My kids love Singapore, but longer than 8 hours. They would choose to go back there over most other destinations.

Can you share what you did in Sing with kids? Would be great to get some suggestions!

We’ve taken our dc on a lot of holidays, some pretty fancy, and the one they enjoyed the most was the year we went to Alderney with some of their friends. It’s such a safe place, they went off unsupervised like the Famous Five in their little pack to buy sweets, ice creams, mooch around on the beach and explore. They loved the freedom. Then we did lots of body boarding and SUPing with them, and it was all so much fun.

The beaches are stunning there - and quiet, even in peak season. If you go for Alderney Week there are loads of fun activities, including a candle lit procession through the streets followed by a bonfire and fireworks. Kid heaven.

Egypt was my DDs absolutely favourite place to be. We did the Jungle Aqua Park (now Neverland) in Hurghada 3 times just for her! I think we've been to different hotels something like 10 times now. She's an adult now and is lamenting not joining us this Easter!

Waterparks, funfairs, the beaches, snorkelling and diving, trips to paradise Island and Orange Bay. October is a great time to go as it's not too hot (that and Easter).

It's easy to book trips to the Pyramids and to Valley of the Kings. Both are long days, but worth it. I'd fly if going to Cairo - it's about £100. It's a minibus journey to Luxor.

Sicily, villa with a pool near mount Etna. pool time, beaches short drive away, adventure park nearby, trips to volcano.

They loved all the usual tourist things like gardens by the bay and the different districts. Then we did universal studios which they loved, and the queue jump pass is really cheap so we didn’t wait in any lines. We rented a cabana at SEA aquarium and also did a dolphin swim… the zoo, river zoo and night safari were fab. It was just a lovely clean, friendly place. They even just liked walking around the airport!
