To think this is going to look so bad and I will be viewed poorly by new employer

DemiS2000 · 15/02/2025 21:21

I start a new job Monday and they had first aid training at work booked for today so I was added on to it. We watched the presentations and did the practical and then we had a 24 question assessment at the end on what we had learnt. We had to get 80 percent or more. We had 2 x tries to pass, so if we didn't get 80 percent the first we could go again I failed both times. Will I be viewed poorly by my new employer. She was there on the day aswell

Is first aid a key part of your new job?

If not, I really wouldn’t worry about it.

It is nursery practitioner role

Why did you fail?

SneakyLilNameChange · 15/02/2025 21:27

I mean it’s not great and I expect you will need to redo the training asap and pass it. All the information should be fairly straightforward and available online so I’d do plenty of revision and practice at home. Knowing first aid correctly is vital in a nursery so it will be a big priority for you to pass it.

loropianalover · 15/02/2025 21:28

Were you anywhere close to the 80%?

Why did you fail?

On the 24 assessment questions at the end, I just didn't get the required 80 percent or higher

What percentage did you get?

DemiS2000 · 15/02/2025 21:29

I got 70 and then 70 something

TokyoSushi · 15/02/2025 21:30

Why do you think you didn't pass? Was it too difficult or you weren't concentrating, or something else?

It's not ideal, do you think you'd pass with another try?

IntermittentStream · 15/02/2025 21:30

Well, you presumably need to pass before you can start your job? Can you take the materials home to revise?

Travelodge · 15/02/2025 21:32

Do they tell you which ones you got wrong? You could try telling your line manager that you're keen to go over those particular topics so you can improve. They might be impressed with your keenness.

Thirteenblackcat · 15/02/2025 21:32

Did anyone else not get the pass mark? Was the teaching of the course adequate?

Yes I understood that. I've just left a job working in education and we had lots of compulsory cpd to do each year. Similar pass rates required. With online training you often get feedback as to which questions you got wrong? I just wondered if you hadn't understood the questions or had difficulty with the format (eg new technical words, learning needs, too short a time to answer etc). But pps are correct this is important training for you.

TinyTornado · 15/02/2025 21:35

Could you ask for a more practical course? I’ve done paediatric first aid and never had to do an assessment like that.
Are you normally ok with exams? I have a friend - very smart - but has a neuro- diversity which includes face blindness and means she really struggles with exams and has to be assessed by course work.
Being as being good in an exam situation is not really what first aid is about, I would have thought a practical assessment and questions would be a better format.

steff13 · 15/02/2025 21:41

If there's a required pass rate, there most be something that happens when you don't pass. I would assume that you have to take a more intensive course or something?

DemiS2000 · 15/02/2025 21:46

I have to call the training provider on Monday regarding it, not sure what will happen after. I don't think anyone else failed. I am just not good with tests. We were visually assessed doing the CPR/recovery position/choking and that was all OK. It was the multiple choice questions that went wrong

OP posts:
BlueSilverCats · 15/02/2025 21:51

Was it the tiger lilly one?

How long was the actual training? Did you have a theory part and a practical part? Were they split/how long for?Was the test on the theory ( that takes you through all kinds of different injuries and scenarios) ?

I would ask if there is an alternative to do the learning online , at home , and then take the test again.

Itiswhatitis80 · 15/02/2025 22:09

I work on a nursery,I would say less than half have the first aid training qualification.

TheM55 · 15/02/2025 22:16

Look, don't worry. They may make you re-do it until you pass, but I'd like to think they are not going to kick you out of your job (if you were earlier stages of employment, then maybe, but they have taken you on now). Some of the questions can be tricky and it is easy to press the wrong answers. I would literally worry about this no more, start your new job and be enthusiastic about doing a resit. Whatever made you fail the first time will not re-emerge the second time. x

Well that’s disgusting. Even worse if you have the training and don’t pass though

Yes legally only 1 first aid trained needs to be on site at any time but the nursery likes to make sure everyone is

Well, if you don’t know it you don’t know it. You didn’t meet the level that determines you as safe to look after children. You need to try to learn the material and hope they let you try again. It’s quite an important aspect of your job I’d imagine.

Barleysugar86 · 15/02/2025 22:23

I've taken similar courses for work and I've not seen anyone not pass before to be fair, but truthfully a lot of the stuff on the test probably fell out of my head in a week or two anyway. Your employer might be a bit harsh about it, hard to tell (I've found some industries like care work are sometimes quite critical of anything they see as causing them extra work) but you've gotten very close to the pass mark, I wouldn't worry too much. They will be able to see you were trying and not just messing around.

That's very concerning! All staff should have it. I've worked I'm a few nurseries and first aid was compulsory and updated every year.

Diningtableornot · 15/02/2025 22:45

I would mention when you see your new boss that you were shocked that you didn't pass that course. You always struggle with multiple choice tests but felt you were taking the information in OK at the time and did well in the practicals. Then get hold of some training material and get someone to test you until you get it all off pat, and resit the test.
