Decorating during exam season

I am willing to listen to all views on this, I genuinely don't think I know which side of the fence I am sitting on right now. Sorry it's a bit long....
I am wanting to decorate my bedroom. I anticipate it will take roughly 9 days - I need to take apart our current furniture, bed and take up the carpet for which I've allowed 2 days over a weekend. 3 days mon-wed for painting (I would get decorators in). A day for the paint to dry properly Thursday. Friday get the carpet fitted. Saturday get my very handy friend round to build our wardrobes and fit 2x acoustic panels, Sunday put our bed together. Done
Now to the aibu......ds has his gcse exams in May/June and we are considering doing this over Easter break. We cannot get it done any sooner due to decorator availability plus I've just started a new job and feel a bit weird about asking for a weeks holiday so soon. Doing it later would be tricky due to actual exams, then we have a kitchen renovation planned for July/August. In an ideal world I want all the 'work' done on the house by the end of summer so that I can get my driveway sorted in September while the weather is still reasonable (I don't want to put skips / have painting equipment etc being put on a newly laid driveway in case of damage).
Aibu for considering this? Part of me thinks the noise won't be that great anyway, painting doesn't make any noise, Thursday Friday it's only the carpet fitters who would be here for around an hour or two. Saturday could be some noise, but ds works on a Saturday anyway. Ds won't be inconvenienced in any other way so it feels an overreaction to delay. The other side of me thinks I should just push back my time frame as he only gets this one shot at gcse's.

Yabu - give the boy some peace and quiet!
Yanbu - he's barely going to notice some decorating in a room he doesn't even use

As a side note, I wanted to do this during Easter so I could also see the kids while on annual leave from work, but could potentially do it the week before so ds is at school for most of the actual work??

The Easter holidays are really important for exam revision, far more important than painting a bedroom.

TickingAlongNicely · 16/02/2025 09:16

Is there any reason you can't do it as same time as kitchen?

destiel00 · 16/02/2025 09:22

No I wouldn't

SilverBlueRabbit · 16/02/2025 09:25

Personally I wouldn't.

I wouldn’t go away over Easter if you want to give your son the best chance at his GCSE’s. He needs to stay in study mode as much as possible until it’s over.

The OP Doesn't mention going away at all

My parents had similar done during my GSCE revision and it drove me mad. I had to leave the house. It wasn’t just the noise but the general disruption. Having work done isn’t conducive to a good study atmosphere - if you take a break there will still be works going on and there is the general ‘on edge’ feeling of someone else being in the home. I ended up taking myself off to the library which was quiet but I still didn’t feel as comfortable as I would have done in my own home.

If works have to be done during that time I would try and make a plan up front for your son to have time and space to study elsewhere.

I'd wait. You want DS to be as calm and stable as possible ie minimise unnecessary disruption

user2848502016 · 16/02/2025 12:48

Wait and do it after the kitchen renovation. My parents got new windows fitted when I was doing gcse revision and it was disruptive, yes only for a few days but still....
