Is this commute realistic?

I am on mat leave currently. We moved house a while ago and I’m now further from my workplace than before. I have two bases. 40 min drive (15 miles) if no traffic. It can be 1hr and 10 if traffic is really heavy. The other base is a 10 min drive to train station, 20 minute train and 5 minute walk away. Realistically 1hr from work to office by the time I’ve waited for the train. It’s safest to assume an hour each way, on all the days I’m out the house.

I am considering going back 3 days, with one of those days WFH. If they approve of my request it will likely be one day each at the other base. Two bases aren’t particularly near each other so I can’t pick childcare closer to work, and I will hopefully be remote one of the days.

Is it realistic long term or will it wear me down? DH works nearer to home but works long shifts so ordinarily I would always be the first contact and one to pick up from childcare if needed.

Grateful for any insight or pointers that I might not have thought about.

Thank you

That’s a pretty standard commute for a lot of people and in the south east that’d be considered short. How doable the train is depends on how often the trains run and how late you’d be if you miss it.

Twice an hour here and temperamental. I could get a bus but that’d be 1.5hrs

And two buses I think

I think it would be ok - is there any flexibility with start and finish times?

Hopefully it will be flexible but I’ll have to start at 9 pretty much

That was my standard 5 day a week commute until Covid with two young children. Easily done. Now I only do two days in the office an hour each way. Again easily done. An hour each way is a standard commute around here

Sunnydiary · 15/02/2025 15:42

Standard commute.

ToKittyornottoKitty · 15/02/2025 15:45

It’s a a fairly normal commute and it’s only 2 days a week, I think you’ll be fine! Obviously your DH has to accept he will be picking DC up if you are delayed getting home though.

DappledThings · 15/02/2025 15:46

I think it sounds really normal too.

FuzzyPuffling · 15/02/2025 16:09

I used to do 1hr 45mins each way for 5 days a week. Yours sounds bliss!
I'm sure it will be fine.

Itsjustnotthevibe · 15/02/2025 16:16

Sounds like my commute (bit shorter now that one of the roads I travel on has been sorted out) but I think you need to factor in who might be able to collect your DC if the trains are screwed or there is a delay on the roads. Would DH be able to do it if that were the case?

ShapedLikeAPastry · 15/02/2025 16:49

Totally standard commute. I did your public transport one 5 days a week pre-covid and never thought twice about it.
