AIBU to find people think it’s alien to hand wash your own car?

So yesterday, I had a bit of spare time and with the weather being what it has been, my car was in need of a wash. Now, when I am busy, I will go to my local car wash and get it hand washed there. But, generally I have always liked washing my own car. I really don’t see it as a big deal. But, recently I am starting to get fed up of people walking past having to say something ‘jokey’ or about a woman washing her own car. I even went on to wash my husbands car after mine because it was convenient and I just thought I might as well since I’m here with all the stuff.
Normally, I usually have the laugh and can respond in a jokey way back. But, I just wasn’t in the mood for it and wish I could just do it without the comments.🙄

I've also been known, when it's particularly bad, to be found in pouring rain with my raincoat on and a soft brush in my hand giving it a sort of a wash...with neighbours driving in and just giving me a "you're mad" look 🤣

Oh im one of those people but would only comment on neighbours or people I know 😂

it’s freezing cold, freezing cold water all over your hands and arms to wash a massive car that someone else will do for little money, I just don’t get it. I’ve never washed a car.

You don't mind paying someone else "little money" to have cold hands, then?

"Can you do mine next?" Never stops being funny. Ever. Apparently 🙄

Yeah, only blokes think this is amusing, I've never had a woman say this to me.

That was me today. But a white car needs a wash whatever the weather.

more likely that she’s just ocd about her car than she has a high end one. Dealers are used to dealing with nut cases

I’ve got a friend who thinks her BMW is a high end car 😂

and for all the hot water comments for gods sake it seems fairly obvious it gets cold

I’m a “he” but yes, very concerned about my paintwork. I’ve actually got 10 cars and all from least to most valuable get properly looked after.

As for dealers dealing with nut cases. When a dealer writes DO NOT WASH on the work order and attaches a big label to the keys which also says DO NOT WASH then their staff are so incompetent that they can’t follow basic instructions and wash it anyway they deserve it with both barrels. I avoid main dealers for work as much as possible, they’re generally useless.

I don't find washing your own car by hand alien. However, actually washing a car at all is somewhat alien to me though.

My dear departed father love washing cars and would offer to clean the cars of people who'd just popped by. He'd even collect my car from the station car park sometimes, valet it and pop it back for my return. I think it made me blind to the need.

Although there is a lot to be said for going through the IMO with thrash metal on extra loud once a year.

ParsnipPuree · 15/02/2025 16:49

I would just be impressed.

ParsnipPuree · 15/02/2025 16:50

If I saw you washing your car

Maddy70 · 15/02/2025 16:51

I've never washed my own car. In fact I'm the country I live in it's illegal to wash your car in a street

Ponderingwindow · 15/02/2025 16:55

I grew up washing my car by hand. Then I moved to a place where soap ending up in the storm drains was a crime. So washing your car at home was effectively illegal because there was no way to prevent run off in that situation.

I moved again and it’s legal to hand wash here. while I prefer a good hand wash, I never went back because I can’t stop thinking about the soap now. It had just never occurred to me before.

2 young lads knocked the door & wanted £20 to wash the car

No I will wash it myself !

I would love to wash mine. I love the feel of the jumbo sponge and soap suds, I don't have a hose though. Does anyone use a watering can?

I did mine with a bucket of soapy water & a watering can (several refills) to rinse the suds off this week, as I couldn't be bothered to get the hose out.

And a watering can is definitely better than another bucket for the rinsing.

Not sure whether I used more or less water though!

Fizbosshoes · 15/02/2025 18:45

I very occassionally wash my car using a bucket, a brush and a sponge. We were persuaded to buy a "care pack" with our car when we bought it new 18 years ago....I've still got plenty of the sachets of stuff from there! There was about 4 different types of cleaner, and something for alloy wheels, im sure it would take about a day if I faffed about with all the different potions used them all! Anyway they've lasted years. I have to take a step out to do the roof properly!

Squidtentacles · 15/02/2025 18:59

Our neighbour seems to do his every weekend! I find that a bit OTT. But each to their own! I don't mind doing mine by hand but not in February.

Well done them though being proactive and trying to earn a bit of pocket money!

I used to use a couple of buckets when I lived in a flat. Just chuck a bucket of water over the car to start, then wash the car. Bucket of water to rinse. Job done.

I always wash my own car. Why pay good money to a car wash company when I can do it myself.
No-one has ever said a bloke should be doing it for me - they wouldn't dare! - but I always get the jovial "You can do mine while you're about it". To which I always cheerfully answer, "Of course, but I charge high rates and I doubt you could afford it". Shuts them up. I'm always terribly smiley and nice when I say it....

My other half washes mine, his van and both our sons cars weekly
He loves it
( plus it keeps him outside all Sunday which is glorious)
