To have a really lazy weekend

agathatrunch · 14/02/2025 22:45

Our weekends are usually taken up with ds hobby which involves lots of travel. He has a free weekend which is rare and I'm feeling like we should make the most of it by doing something fun as a family. But equally the weather the shit, I'm starting with a horrid head cold and I would love to stay cosy at home. The danger here being that when we do this both kids gravitate towards screen and I end up feeling guilty.

Aibu to let it slide for one weekend? We may pop out for haircuts and a hot chocolate. Or a dog walk. But otherwise I just can't be arsed. Why do I always feel so guilty?

The whole "lazy guilt" thing isn't something I've ever noticed in real life. I know loads of people who love a lazy weekend and positively indulge in it - I'm one of them!

I do think it's a bit strange to feel guilty about wanting to do nothing much for a couple of days, but then I was raised having lazy days every couple of weeks so it's always been very normal for me.

We grew up with outings being the exception, not the rule.

It's good for kids' brain development to have to entertain themselves, read, do creative activities, rather than be constantly schlepped around.

Never felt guilty for having a lazy day in my life. A couple of days with extra screen time won’t harm kids.

If I had loads of wholesome stuff planned I wouldn't feel so bad. But the reality will be all of us sat in different rooms on screens of some kind. It's almost easier to go out sometimes. But it's cold and I feel crap and it always costs me money 😂

It’s fine OP. Everyone needs a weekend like this sometimes. It’s cold wet and miserable, totally fine to hibernate at home

Wigtopia · 15/02/2025 10:37

I sometimes specifically plan for a lazy weekend and do some extra chores on a Thurs and Friday evening so that I can be fully lazy for two whole days 🙂

it’s not an every weekend thing but that’s what makes it so nice when i have scheduled a lazy one!

I love a lazy weekend and don't feel guilty . I only have a cinema trip planned this weekend , today , so tomorrow I'm going to cook a lovely roast and watch Netflix all day . Even the dogs don't mind . They had a long walk yesterday and are a breed happy to relax .

Why feel guilty? Sounds like they have a busy life and a day of vegetating in front of a screen will not kill them.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 15/02/2025 10:48

I think it's fine to have a quiet weekend however I wouldn't let my dd have 8 hours on a screen, even now she's an older teen.

I don't think it's particularly relaxing or good for your brain.

A quiet weekend for me looks like taking the dog for a walk, baking a cake, watching a film, reading a book, getting a board game out and maybe a couple of hours on the phone/ipad.

Same here! Got an early finish at work yesterday, came home, did all the house work.
currently laid on the sofa, browsing new clothes with friends on in the background.
DS upstairs playing on his pc, DH in bed as works nights. Not moving until lunchtime 😂

I know what you mean OP, I always feel like I should be doing something at the weekend and it annoys me! I wish I could not feel guilty for having a chilled one!

Ontherocksthisyear · 15/02/2025 11:06

Oh dear God, have a lazy weekend. Do you really need to come to MN for this.

agathatrunch · 15/02/2025 11:27

Well I've had a lovely long lie in. Cooked some breakfast. Did a bit of de cluttering with ds in his bedroom and did a yoga workout online. Now curled up under a blanket reading my book. Ds is going to watch football later with a friend so he'll get out today. It's so grey and miserable though I just can't be bothered with much else.

I'm not sure what the need is for so much hostility and sniping. I'm not 'humblebragging' and I don't think it's strange to feel a bit guilty when you simply can't be arsed to do something with your dc on your day off.

Had I created a post saying that my kids were on their iPads for 8 hours a day you can bet I'd have my arse handed to me then as well. Cant win on here sometimes.

By people that don't matter though?! Seriously, in the 80s, 90s, 00s the likes of Going Live, Live & Kicking, SMTV/CDUK went on from early morning all the way up to lunch and we sat glued. We also watched the A Team, Dukes of Hazard, The Muppet Show, Blankety Blank, Blind Date etc in the afternoon and into the evening. It was FINE

‘Lovely long’ lie in

cooked breakfast

decluttered

yoga workout

now reading a book

DS watching football later

OP, you posted that at half eleven. That’s not a lazy day!

agathatrunch · 15/02/2025 21:03

@ThisIsMyYearToFindMyself by half 11 most days I feel like I've lived a thousand lives 😂

It was very lovely being lazy until about 2pm then I got bored and restless lol. Youngest has been in all day but the eldest went out to watch footy with his friends.

It's been nice for a change but I think I'll have to leave the house tomorrow. No plans so we'll see where the wind takes us.

Relaxing and enjoying relaxing is not being lazy.

Sparklebelle1024 · 15/02/2025 21:16

We do this every so often! No matter what the weather because we really need it. It’s bliss! Embrace it

AcquadiP · 15/02/2025 21:19

The only one who'll be happy to go out in this weather is the dog! Exercise your dog early then the rest of the day is yours to laze about.

Goofy03 · 15/02/2025 21:27

I know what you mean OP - generally it’s deemed a ‘good thing’ to get out and get fresh air, walk, exercise, tidy, cook, eat well, be productive etc! We’re conditioned to think this is the RIGHT or even moral way to be. I like to be intentional about lazy days so it feels like I’m choosing to do it, rather than just drifting into it and wasting time. So I’m very deliberate about making it an indulgence and telling myself it’s healthy to rest and revive.
