WWYD? Loud music

Every night between 9pm and 10.30pm (usually closer to 9pm most nights) there is loud music outside my house. Originally I thought it was a car driving past with windows down and stereo blaring although I was confused at how long I could hear it for as a car isn't that slow.
I was outside about a fortnight ago and discovered its actually a man walking down the street with a large stereo on a strap on his shoulder! Which goes a long way to understanding why I can hear the music for around a minute faintly then louder, loud, quieter, then faintly.
I'm baffled tbh, I didn't even realise stereos like this still existed and for the love of God why would you not use headphones?!
It's only a minute or so and I'm more bemused than annoyed (only because as yet he hasn't woken the DC!) When I first saw it I wanted to shout over to him but stopped myself because well I'm a woman living alone with 2 DC and I'm on my doorstep so he would clearly know where I live if he didn't take me calling him out on his antisocial behaviour very well

WWYD??

AIBU it's only a minute or so, enjoy the music

AINBU you should say something to him

Well you’ve said it yourself why you didn’t say anything. So my vote is don’t say anything!

Isittimeformynapyet · 14/02/2025 22:31

What about the third option - getting someone else to say something?

Youcanttakeanelephantonthebus · 14/02/2025 22:33

So it lasts for a minute or so?

I'd imagine he plays it loud to create a reaction. He will get bored if no one comments. Maybe request a song?

XenoBitch · 14/02/2025 22:35

YABU - He is just walking past your house. He is walking past at a time that you can't really complain about noise anyway.

But YANBU for being curious about him. There is a guy in my town who walks up and down with a speaker in his bag.

mrsfollowill · 14/02/2025 22:35

For the sake of a minute I would just ignore it!

Exactly.
Don’t create needless drama with him.
Otherwise he might sit outside your house !

Lambington · 14/02/2025 22:40

There is nothing you can do so just learn to live with it.

MuddyPawsIndoors · 14/02/2025 22:43

I'd ignore it too for the sake of a minute.

It's possible he has mental health issues as that's such an odd thing to do.

Have a look at your local FB groups, someone's bound to have posted about him.

Turmerictolly · 14/02/2025 23:34

This was a thing in the 70's/80's - boom boxes. Maybe it's a revival. Annoying but if it's just for a minute or so then you can ignore.

HundredMilesAnHour · 14/02/2025 23:39

I know his twin except he’s a cyclist. Really annoying (particularly when he blasts the entire park on a sunny weekend) but at least it’s over quickly. It seems to be their version of shouting “LOOK AT ME! I WANT ATTENTION!”

DelilahBucket · 14/02/2025 23:49

My next door neighbour is STILL going strong with their shitty music. A regular occurrence. Been at it since 7:30 ish as well as the constant door slamming because you know, who wants to be quiet? I wouldn't even bat an eyelid at what you're experiencing.

Deadbeatex · 15/02/2025 18:54

@DelilahBucket I'm sorry that sucks but is not really a comparable situation tbf. I hope they move out soon and you can enjoy some new lovely considerate neighbours. Is it worth exploring a noise complaint with the council?

@Isittimeformynapyet yes I think I'll speak to my neighbour who has a young baby as he may well want to say something!

My initial instinct was to shout over something along the lines of "are you for real?!" And suggest he uses headphones obvs lol

It's just so bizarre, it's a large stereo/boom box thing and it's LOUD usually dance music you'd hear in a nightclub, he doesn't even bop his head along to it he just walks along like anybody else would going about their business! It's a normal residential street and I'd say he's early 30s maybe? Obviously I've no idea if he has any issues but surely 99.9% of people wouldn't carry about a large stereo on a shoulder strap and whack the volume on full blast just to walk down a street on their way to/from somewhere 🤷🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️

As I've said I'm more bemused than annoyed and whilst the chances are he probably wouldn't cause me any issues I'll continue not saying anything directly and have a chat with my neighbours. Maybe next time I see him I'll have a dance 💃 or just give him a WTF?! look 😂
