How to spend a few hours in Norwich?

HellaElla · 14/02/2025 22:00

I have a rare opportunity for up to four hours without the kids alone in the centre of Norwich during the day. I’d love ideas of what to do. I’ve also just been paid and have a bit of spare cash I could spend (up to £200). I’m up for shopping, culture, and maybe a great coffee/cake pitstop. I love bookshops, independent clothes/homeware shops, and I could do with some nice new makeup. And on the culture side, I enjoy modern art, and history - especially medieval! So I’d be open to anything that ticks any of those boxes!

The lanes have independent shops and cafes, and then also Jarrolds on the corner of the marketplace is a department store which has makeup etc.

The castle is right there for history although there isn't much left of the original. You can also get a diy walking tour of the history sights from the Norwich tourist website.

Shopping wise Jarrolds is a good bet. Basically a big department store so has a bit of everything. The lanes and the Royal Arcade for independent shops.
Coffee and cake head to Bread Source in the cathedral. The vanilla glazed doughnut is amazing. Tombland is lovely to walk through and the cathedral grounds have just unveiled a Paddington statue which is adorable.

Yes to Jarrolds (like a mini Selfridges crossed with John Lewis crossed with Fortnums in the basement - good spot for a solo lunch at the champagne bar too). The Lanes behind it and also to the left are lovely too.

The Cathedral Close and Carhedral for culture. 10 min walk from Jarrolds / The Lanes and beautiful.

Norwich castle - they have an art gallery there with some very good exhibitions, they currently have a Turner exhibition which is very good. The Cathedral is also worth a visit. (You could sit on the new bench with the Paddington statue 😂😁).

For more independent type foodie places visit the market, lots of really good food stalls with all sorts of different things.

Definitely the cathedral, lovely cafe. The castle has various art galleries as well as museum stuff. (Sainsbury Centre is amazing for modern art but it’s on the university campus not in the city centre). Strangers Hall is interesting and the Bridewell museum but if you’ve only got one day, I’d go to the castle.

It’s Norwich Science Festival all week so the area by the Forum has events going on, lots of which are free. Other than that, I’d check out the Castle and get some lunch, there’s an excellent Japanese restaurant (Shiki) near the Cathedral. Followed by coffee and a bun at Bread Source, that’d make me very happy!

You should also go to CafeGelato. It's cold I know, but it's the best Gelato around for sure.

The castle. The Mustard Museum.

  1. Have a wander round the market and choose some delicious street food for lunch
  2. If you haven’t been to the cathedral definitely check out that plus the close around it and elm hill opposite
  3. Fir home wear check out the home-wear floor of Jarrolds, the granary, elm, pascale stores, awtwin, the garment stores and maybe sostrene grene if you don’t mind a chain
  4. The Book Hive is a great independent bookshop
  5. Have a wander around Country and Eastern. Even if what they stock isn’t your thing the building is pretty cool.
  6. Walk up to Upper St Giles for good cafes and more homewear

If you go to Jarrolds. Go to the market. If you come out of the store turn right, top stall on the market on right is ice cream stall (also do cocktails). The butcher family run it ... go say hello!

If it's a nice day, I can recommend Plantation Gardens. It's such a peaceful spot. It's also a stone's throw from the Roman Catholic cathedral which is a lovely Gothic Edwardian edifice.

BigTroubleinSmallBoots · 14/02/2025 23:08

The Bookhive is a fantastic bookshop, and it’s round the corner from Atwin - indie selling clothes, jewellery and home ware, as well as Jarrolds, Bread Source and Cafe Gelato. The Giggling Goat is a lovely art and craft shop with Strangers coffee nearby - best in Norwich IMO.
if you have more time to spare than a few hours, I’d recommend going slightly out of the city to the UEA campus and visiting the Sainsbury Centre which is a wonderful gallery and private collection. Well worth a visit.

It’s a super pretty cathedral

RubberyChicken · 16/02/2025 16:12

Longstanton Spice Museum?

Jarolds is very good. A quirky department store with a chocolate section headed as a library. Castle is good as is the cathedral. Refrectory is nice. Ber St Kitchen on Ber St also good. Out at the University the Sainsbury centre is good for.art exhibitions.
