Hi all
Hopefully I'll get some answers.
Anyways..
My wife and I are looking to buy a new house. We've found a house we really love that ticks all the boxes apart from one. The back garden is north east facing. I know that south facing gives the most sunlight so I'm guessing north facing will mean mostly shade?? Can anyone give any information on how much sunlight we will receive in the summer with a north east facing garden? I'm not sure exactly how big the garden is but it's pretty big. Maybe 60ft long and backs on to allotments so no buildings behind. We love the sun and family BBQs in the summer and would love our kids to be able to enjoy paddling pools etc.
Everything else about the house is perfect. It would be a shame to turn down this house just because the garden doesn't get enough sun but it is something that is quite important to us.
So I guess... Yabu the garden will get sun. It'll be fine. Go for the house!
Or yanbu.. it won't get much sun. Look for another house.

It's 60ft long, not 6, the house will be a speck in the horizon a d won't be blocking the light!

I'm sure some small part of your 60ft garden will get the sun, you should manage

Will you put an outdoor kitchen at the points where you will be BBQing and using the pizza oven etc?

It will be a bit of a faff going back and forth if there’s no water supply/power etc.

I have a thin courtyard north facing "garden" and it's absolutely of no use in comparison with yours.

Clothes never dry on the line from November to March. They just hang there looking thoroughly miserable.
The closest 20' is permanently moist and grows a strange fungus that looks like seaweed. Fuck knows what it is but it looks like it has sentience.
I try not to annoy it.
Cats, Buddlia and Stinky Robert adore my damp and dark area. Who knew.
The top end is a suntrap in summer, great for tomatoes, cats and sunburn

Yay.

You'll have shade right up by your house, pretty much all the time. The other end of the garden will get plenty sun. People with gardens with this aspect tend to put a patio with dining sets at the sunny end and expect to have to cart everything down the garden - it's obviously much easier if the patio area is right next to your house, but that is really the only downside.

As the garden is a reasonable length there will be sunny areas. I had a mid terrace with north facing yard behind and even that got some sun at the far end. Plus mine had buildings and tall trees around which yours doesn't.

The main thing is you will get sun, just not towards the house. So if it ticks all the boxes otherwise, I would go for it.
