For not taking kids outside

We are staying, in a very hot country won’t say which for confidentiality reasons, with our baby who is under 1 and toddler who is nearly 3.

So far it’s been a great time and we’ve been waking up at 5 and going out early so that we are able to do everything before it gets in the 30s which is around midday. It’s very cool in the morning, perfect temperature for the kids who are used to UK weather. They have not experienced 30 degree heat before so I take precautions to prevent heat stroke such as keeping them in air conditioning. Our accommodation has a shaded area so they aren’t in direct sunlight and can go whenever during the day (we go out everyday and have water fights.)

Family member made me feel bad for not letting them out in the sun past midday but the temperature is usually 33/34 at this time. They said they are missing out but my fear is as they are such young children they will overheat and be unable to regulate their body temperature. Not to mention they can become dehydrated. My system now works for us, they have gotten to do many things like feed the elephants, go on a boat ride, see monkeys, visit the zoo, go to the beach all while staying healthy and hydrated. They are also able to go in shaded areas and indoor play centres just not in direct sunlight. Anything more and I think we are just risking their health and making them uncomfortable.

You are not being unreasonable, but no no idea how mentioning the country in this case could have any confidentiality implications

Sorry should’ve said for anonymity reasons.

Still don't see how mentioning the country could have any impact... I'm guessing you are not the only parent there with young children in that entire country!
But anyway, your plan is not unreasonable

That sounds perfectly reasonable and an amazing experience for your children.

Tell your relative that you're really happy with how your holiday is going and you'll let them know if you need advice from them. Ignore their opinion.

Your children, your choice.

I wonder if there is another factor at play here. Is your relative there with you, and being disturbed by 5am wakings or missing out on seeing grandchildren by basically operating in a different time zone?

Isn't it normal in hot countries for people to have a siesta in the afternoon and for young children to stay up later? I think it's sensible to keep them out of the hottest sun in the early afternoon. You're making the most of your mornings and as long as the children are happy, I'd keep doing that and not worry what others think.
