Why do some posters NOT read the full thread.

A few threads now where people don't read the full thread and come back with a completely different take on the problem.

Are they lazy, stupid or can't read/understand the written words.

OP posts:

@lnks you have lost your bet as I have come back.

It's really sad, that on a website that I ordinarily find to be one on which women support other women, you are laughing at my disability.

I genuinely feel pretty crap about myself already. I know some people think I am stupid or thick, and maybe I am. I just wish people would stop and think about the fact that there are real people behind the user names, with real feelings

Because some of us have neurodiversity's that impact our ability to read really long threads quickly enough to keep up.

You could always just read OP’s posts?

It’s the posters who don’t even read them that get on my nerves, they reply to the original post that was written 2 days ago.

Nobody keeps track of all of the specific usernames that write separate replies on the same thread. Of course I’m not going to notice that ‘Inks’ has responded 3 different times saying 3 different things, and link them all together to somehow understand that I shouldn’t laugh react to a funny quip about OP’s never returning to shit show threads?!

You can’t police what emojis people want to use either. Stop taking everything so personally.

A lot of people don’t even read the original post, never mind the whole thread.

Right.

I will read the original post a few times before posting.

I’m often baffled by some of the responses and will re-read the OP’s first post and the next ones wondering where some posters got their information from. It’s often obvious which ones are major projections.

I wouldn’t read every posts though depending on the length of thread. Plus, often many posters only read the original
post and not the later ones, asking questions that were already answered or adding things that the OP never stated.

My post was literally the 5th on the thread. If you can't keep up after just 5 posts then maybe I am not the only one who struggles. You have left laughing emojis to a couple of my posts.

And it is personal when you are laughing at my posts

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 12/02/2025 16:02

I remember I got rounded on once.

WHERE DOES IT SAY THE CHILD IS 14? IT DOESN'T SAY THAT IN THE OP

It was in the thread title, so some people don't even read that properly Grin

I can keep up with the responses just fine. I personally don’t keep up with what usernames are posting what - does anyone?! If I see one post from Inks that I perceive as funny am I truly supposed to scroll back up and see if Inks has posted anything else which might change my mind? Is it really that serious? 😅 I didn’t even look at your username when I read it and laugh reacted. Because it was not personal.

Anyway I have now gone back and checked, and I only laugh reacted to your ‘OP won’t return’ post and put a laugh emoji in my reply to you. That is it.

That's happened today. Straight at the top, the child was y3.
How old/ what year are they in?
And repeat.

If the thread is quite long (and especially growing fast, I'll tend to read the first couple of pages, the last couple of pages and "see all" OP's posts. That way you can see which way it's gone, pertinent updates, if OP is still engaging (or lost the will to live) or if it's just descended into a bunfight between two posters on a random sidenote.

lnks · 12/02/2025 16:11

My adhd and dyslexia has resulted in me being labelled as stupid at school, leaving school with no GCSE's and struggling in work. Consequently, I suffer with crippling anxiety, low mood and just generally just feel pretty crap about myself.

I actually just successfully completed a part-time degree with the OU so I clearly am not stupid, but the fact that people view me as such still hasn't negated any of the above.

It would have been fine to discuss this subject in a more respectful way without resorting saying that people like me are lazy or stupid. I suspect the OP wrote such an inflammatory OP to directly insult people like me, it's just a shame how many people agree with her comments

Who’s laughing at your disability? Confused

Ace56 · 12/02/2025 16:12

I do think there are a lot of non-IT literate people on Mumsnet, as there are often comments from people who can’t work out how to vote, how to edit, how to quote threads etc. So I’m not surprised they can’t work out how to filter the OP’s responses.

If there’s a super long thread that’s all you really need to do, as often the OP gives vital updates or drip feeds so the responses at the beginning are sometimes irrelevant!

lnks · 12/02/2025 16:13

Anyway, I'll leave you to it. It's clear nobody is willing to consider anything other than their own points of view so it's really not worth me posting

Redpeach · 12/02/2025 16:17

I don't know why it pisses people off so much, its not like they're the thread police

DalzielOrNoDalzielAndDontPascoe · 12/02/2025 16:29

I know threads can sometimes move very quickly, and that people want to respond to particular posts as they come across them...

However, when people are replying directly to the OP - especially when they haven't even read all the OP's posts - with what they must surely realise is going to be an obvious and far from original response, I do wonder what they think they're achieving.

Even when I have read the thread, if somebody has said what I would have said, I accept that it's been said and I don't duplicate it.

When questioned, people will cite the fact that they consider the thread too long for them to read, but they apparently don't realise that, by adding their (much duplicated) comment, they're making it even longer for everybody else to read. Maybe they just assume that their time is much more important than everybody else's?

I do wonder how many of the people who wade right in obliviously would do this in real life too: turn up halfway through a discussion and just chime in with their thoughts and wisdom on what they assume it must be all about?

I'm reminded of the Gavin & Stacey thread at Christmas, where somebody said they'd watched a compilation of '20 best G&S moments' - obviously intended as a highlight/summing up nostalgia trip for people who are familiar with the programme - and found it rubbish as they didn't know any of the background or any of the in-jokes that had developed over the years!

By the way, even if your device doesn't allow 'see all', doesn't it still highlight the OP's posts on a different colour, so you can fast-scroll through until you get to a green/pink or whatever post?

Meandhimtogether · 12/02/2025 16:33

@lnks why do you not understand that people don't know that you have a disability.

Plenty of conversations go like that in real life, humans are messy imperfect creatures, as are their communications sometimes

Justleaveitblankthen · 12/02/2025 16:39

You can't read the OP'S updates on the App and I only use the App. It's frustrating TBH.

True, but don't you usually ask for a precis if you turn up late to it?

You wouldn't ask "Why is Laura crying?" and then let the people who've been there all along give you one basic introductory sentence before cutting them dead and saying "No, no, I'm keen to guess!" like the customer in Monty Python's cheese shop... or would you?

Hankunamatata · 12/02/2025 16:45

I can't find a see next on the app which makes skimming a thread awkward

Are they lazy, stupid or can't read/understand the written words.

Not for any of those reasons. I read the OP and leave a comment based on that, plus any updates they might give. But it's irrelevant to me what others post.

JohnTheRevelator · 12/02/2025 16:57

Well when the thread goes on for several pages, maybe they don't have the time?

Redpeach · 12/02/2025 17:01

I always associate the use of the laughing emoji with low intelligence

Not all phones allow you to see all the updates from the op..and if your reading through pages of stuff you comment as you go or would never find it again.

I'm pretty sure they do if you use MN through your web browser, rather than the app.

Plenty of people say the app is very limited in what you can do, so I have no idea why they'd rather use that than desktop.
