Resigning/sick leave- what would the best course of action be?

I'm in the Civil Service, passed probation but been here under 2 years. Was an AO until end of Oct and have been an EO since in another dept.

Suffering from work related stress and received a 2 week GP sick note this morning, haven't sent it yet.

Have been job hunting and today was made a formal job offer. Notice period is 4 weeks but I'm very sure it can be reduced because I do not need to be replaced as such (i was part of a large training cohort) I technically haven't started the work, I am still training, don't need to do any sort of handover etc. So it would be pointless of me doing 4 weeks of e learning and so on for a job I'm going to leave.

Just wondering what to do here. Can I hand in my sick note and resignation at the same time? I feel I would really benefit from some time off to rest and work on my anxiety and insomnia.
Trying to look online but not sure what the procedure is? Would I still receive sick pay if I'm in my notice?

The procedure is in your work policies. Betting on them reducing your notice period is unrealistic. They don't have to reduce it no matter how logical you think it might be. You have a sick note so go off sick, resign at the same time or a day later. At this point I am not sure how much difference it is likely to make unless you need references for your new job.

Your sick time can be part of your notice period yes but that's only 2 weeks so you'll need two more or to work your current job. You can't start your new job while off sick somewhere else.

Thank you both. Yes definitely not intending to start work elsewhere whilst on sick leave. I'm hoping they can reduce it but I know i can't 100% bank on it. I'll ask tomorrow..

I'm not sure why but posting this has just made me feel even worse, maybe it's just the anxiety. As I've said I'm hoping they can reduce it, I'm not assuming they will. And I'm not planning to start another job whilst on leave, nowhere did I say that.

It sounds like you'd be entitled to be signed off for your full four weeks notice period, just going by how anxious it is making you. That might be the better option. Wishing you good luck for your new job, this is a crappy time but it will end and you will feel better.

Hand in sick note. Get contract signed for the new job. Tell old job that you resigning and see if you can negotiate down your notice period. Confirm start date with new job - give yourself a week's grace between the two.

Then get another sick note to cover the remaining time you're legally employed in job 1 if you feel you need it.

Exactly right. I hope you have better luck in your new role op.

It is perfectly legal in the UK to work in another job while off sick, no need to tell them anything.
There may be conditions in your 1st job contract of employment; however, if you're leaving it's fairly immaterial as the worst they can do is dismiss you (and you're going anyway) so they're not likely to bother.
Hand in your sick note. Hand in your resignation. Arrange with new job a starting date to suit you. Ensure your doctor issues another sick note to cover the rest of your notice period.
I have done it myself in the past when I was still working.
