To think there is no actual point to head lice?

Why do they even exist?

To torture parents

Frowningprovidence · 11/02/2025 17:27

I think they give your life meaning.

Without headlice we are just wandering about, empty, searching for God.

But with headlice we are a whole habitat for a species.

TempestTost · 11/02/2025 17:29

You need to think about it from their point of view.

BiggerBoat1 · 11/02/2025 17:29

There is very little in life more satisfying than hunting for the little buggers with a nitty gritty.

Totally agree with this. I'm almost sad mine are too old to be catching headlice now!

shortoedtreecreeper · 11/02/2025 17:32

I agree with you.I really hate them and am now short sighted so if I get them it has been a problem getting rid of them.As an adult I work with children and am always worried I might catch them.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 11/02/2025 17:34

Maybe as parasites they help develop your immune like threadworms do?

Or - this is a very exciting theory of which I am rather proud- they are in the process of evolving to be useful, they just haven’t got there yet. So for now they are merely annoying but for future generations they will help us detect predators, or clean our blood, or something mutually beneficial.

Why do any of us exist?

Profound.

Isn’t it something about testing us to see if we can maintain a saintly countenance, and be worthy to either have a lovely time in heaven’s afterlife, or a more affluent life on the wheel?

goodnightgrumble · 11/02/2025 18:22

Ooh the satisfaction when there are loads on the nit comb. It's slightly exciting, yet slightly disturbing.

They definitely fulfil a purpose. Mammals strengthen bonds through mutual grooming (and the little bits of free protein for those who haven't discovered the existence of electrical bug zapping combs and neurotoxin infused shampoos). Those increased bonds led to the eventual evolution of human-like primates and eventually Homo sapiens. Without those intimate bonds formed between relatives, offspring, sexual partners and non related members of groups, it wouldn't have been possible for humanity to get where it is today.

Nits are therefore responsible for everything up to and including Elon Musk and Trump's fake tan.

Hankunamatata · 11/02/2025 18:30

Parasites like thread worms or other more exotic ones like tape worms

Brilliant post, but now I feel a bit sick.

Elsvieta · 11/02/2025 18:59

What's the point of us? Most of the living things on earth would be better off if we'd just disappear (although admittedly not the lice).

snookiesnax · 11/02/2025 19:16

There are people on YouTube who allow their primates to groom them and it looks super relaxing. Perhaps we're all stressed and neurotic now because we don't have little fluffy fingers gently going through our hair in search of snacks.

BiggerBoat1 · 11/02/2025 19:34

Sounds lovely having a monkey riffling through your hair.
you wouldn’t have the worry about whether you should make small talk the way you do with a human masseuse

Thepossibility · 11/02/2025 19:40

They just wander about sucking the life out of their natural habitat and breeding. Much like humans.
