What the hell is this?

Had an Indian takeaway Saturday night. Felt ok the next morning but by afternoon my stomach had started gurgling a bit. No diarrhea or pain so I had my Sunday lunch and by evening I had intense cramping and diarrhoea.

The next morning I woke up with a grumbly feeling in my stomach and a lot of trapped wind. This has basically been the case up until now with the odd sporadic episode of really intense diarrhea thrown in too. I go from feeling ok to having this awful stomach pain. Could it be food poisoning? Or perhaps something that didn't agree with me?

I must admit I've had this before when eating Indian food and I don't know if I'm intolerant to some of the spices or if there are hygiene issues or what.

I'm stuck at work with very limited toilet facilities feeling utterly dreadful. Does this sound like a bug?

It sounds like you need to avoid Indians if you’ve suffered the same effects before.

Gloriainextremis · 11/02/2025 16:39

Sounds like your body trying to get rid of something it doesn't like rather than a bug.

pictoosh · 11/02/2025 16:39

Could be a bug, could be mild food poisoning. You'll never know. The symptoms and duration are much the same.

minipie · 11/02/2025 16:40

Sounds quite likely you have an intolerance to an ingredient. (my dad can’t have turmeric for example). But there can be multiple spices and flavours in Indian dishes so it’s going to be hard to figure out what.

unlikely to be hygiene issues unless you always order from the same place? If so maybe try a different one and see if the same thing happens.

Theunamedcat · 11/02/2025 16:43

Get some buscapan to make your stomach less gassy and let it run it's course

eosmum · 11/02/2025 16:46

I'm just at the end of a bug that was like this. Thought it was a food issue but a few people in the family have had it. No matter what I eat now I get cramps, but the intensity is lessening every day.

JudgeBread · 11/02/2025 16:46

This is how my friend discovered she's allergic to fenugreek.

CatsWhiskerz · 11/02/2025 16:48

Did you save some rice and eat it later? It can carry a bacteria, Bascillus cereus that can cause stomach pains and D/V which often comes from reheated rice

Lollzi86 · 11/02/2025 17:03

had a friend who couldn’t have ghee as it caused symptoms like this

No rice. Well I did have some on the night but didn't reheat it or anything.

Ugh it's put me off massively.

If you've had it with Indian food before, it's likely to be an intolerance rather than food poisoning. I struggle with some spicy food as well, but I have no idea which particular spice sets it off!

Rawnotblended · 11/02/2025 17:34

I vote intolerance too. Chick pea/gram flour is a big culprit.

ItGhoul · 11/02/2025 17:59

If you've had this problem before, specifically with Indian food, then it's highly likely to be an ingredient that doesn't agree with you.

HotPotatoesies · 11/02/2025 18:18

As others say, it could be an intolerance. Indian food often contains a lot of onion which can have this effect

Teamcullen23 · 11/02/2025 20:44

I only ever have an unadventurous tikka masala! Nothing hot. I think it could be the fat content/ghee or maybe some spice. It doesn't happen every time.
