I've just been ID'd

When purchasing a 0% beer.

Alcohol content clearly listed on the side as 0.0%. So it's not 0.5%.

AIBU to think you should not be ID'd when buying 0% beer?

You win @igivein ! I have a similar story about a cuddly toy snake in an aircraft cabin.

Rest assured I didn't question the sales assistant, as they're just doing their job.

My frustration is as @DragonfliesAboveYourBed says. The supermarkets are going beyond the law here. They're wasting their staffs time and everyone who has to wait for the non checks.

I used to drink Becks Blue in pregnancy by and always got ID’d despite looking about 62yo thanks to major fatigue

Theunamedcat · 10/02/2025 23:01

It's a waste of time checking U rated films and flavours why not save it for actual age rated films and actual alcohol

Whotenanny · 10/02/2025 23:03

I get so annoyed when I'm ID'd. I'm more than double the legal drinking age, I have three kids, and I have an incredible amount of wrinkles.

A lady in Waitrose wouldn't accept my driving licence the other day because the photo is now B&W and she hadn't seen that before. She rubbed the dates with her fingers, eyed me up a few times, and proceeded to ask me if I had another form of photo ID.

Edited to add: I agree with you, it's really silly. I might as well be drinking orange juice - that's 0.0%, too!

The supermarkets don't want to be seen to promoting alcohol branded goods to children, irrespective of the actual alcohol content.

They don't want to be seen doing it because it's against licencing aims, and without a licence no one gets served.

Every item in the shop goes into the computer system under a category - grocery, produce, dairy... Etc. Beer & Wine is a category, alcohol removed wine and beer are still under the "beer & wine" category, so they still trigger the automatic response from the computer system to check ID when they are scanned..

I was once ID'd for a porridge to go bar. Yes it was self checkout but I'm still baffled...

Yes, I had it once with an alcohol flavoured item that actually did not actually contain alcohol. It was Christmas Eve. I felt so sorry for the lady who was serving me as she said so many people got angry at her when she asked for id and she was so grateful that I showed her my id without any issue. She was just doing her job. I tend just to carry id on me when I go shopping just in case.

When I was IDed twice at 42, the staff were quite amused by my happy dance.

Presumably you've never had the pleasure of being age-checked when buying a mini Xmas pudding?

Yep- a mini Xmas pudding, gluten free, was flagged up when I was self checking out.

Got nothing to do with how old you look, it's bar code/ ingredients on the item.

See my post about buying a mini Xmas pudding.

And I'm your age.

Years ago, when self checkout was a new thing, my brother kept getting the ID check meaning an assistant was needed, no alcohol, or other restricted items. He finally worked out it was his newspaper... The Guardian to be exact.
