And giving cards to family members is just weird?

I'm giving my 7 year old girls handmade cards and some little chocolate hearts.
I've never 'done' Valentine's Day within a r'ship, so just doing a daft reinterpretation of it because, well, I want to.
I don't give a shiny shit what anyone else does or thinks.
😁

I'm going out for an Indian meal on Valentines Day with dh and ds.Its only another day but it's nice to celebrate love in general.

I used to love getting valentines chocolates from my dad, in a heart shaped box with velvet and ribbons and fake roses on it when I was a child!
I used to get teased a bit by my pals, but I think they were probably jealous!

Same here. I was really young and it made me feel so grown up and special. Just a lovely memory (my father has been gone for many years now).

Overtheatlantic · 10/02/2025 18:21

Is Kimberley feeling a bit insecure about what she might, or might not, get for VD?

GOODforyourhealth · 10/02/2025 18:21

I give my young children chocolate heart lollies or similar, did cuddly bears for their first ones. When they're older and have partners, I'll def stop, as that would be a bit creepy, 😂
Before I had a bf, dm gave me a heart chocolate one year, and I always remember liking it because I felt a bit shit that I had no valentines!! It sort of cheered me up.

I do think valentines cards to everybody in the family including pets is crazy though!

snoopyfanaccountant · 10/02/2025 18:22

I had a year at school in the USA and Valentine cards were handed out like Christmas cards. You gave them to everyone in the class. It was still a Hallmark sponsored event but it was much more about friendship rather than romance.

When I was a kid in the 80s and 90s Valentine's Day seemed to be about sending anonymous cards to a secret crush. No idea when that stopped and it became a commercial free for all, or maybe it always was and I just wasn't aware of that aspect.

I was a kid in the 80s and 90s too and my mum always got us a balloon and a teddy on valentines.

It's awkward that Valentine's Day has the same acronym as Venereal Disease. I hope nobody gets VD for VD.

Thepeopleversuswork · 10/02/2025 18:29

That’s a bit like saying “Christmas is about Jesus”. Valentines Day, like most of these other days, is a pagan holiday originally appropriated by Christians and then by capitalism.

I don’t bother with it myself because I think it’s naff but people should celebrate it however they choose. And most people love their kids so why shouldn’t they send them cards or gifts?

Iamallowedtodisagreewithyou · 10/02/2025 18:30

I always buy a Valentines Day Meal Deal for me and my mum.

Coz I love my mum!

Bring back Jesus Day I say!

Well I think Valentines Day and all that goes with it is weird in general but I'm not everyone so it's irrelevant what we think!

ginasevern · 10/02/2025 18:33

I've never heard of giving your kids or other relatives Valentine's Day cards. Maybe this has become a more recent thing? A mum friend of mine once posted an anonymous card to her son to give him a bit of a boost. Not sure if it worked or whether that was the right thing to do.

Jk987 · 10/02/2025 18:34

Love is love, why put restrictions on how it's celebrated? The world needs more love not less! ❤️

Within reason 😂

PinkBuffalo · 10/02/2025 18:42

I always give out little heart chocolates to my friends for valentines. So far all good I hope! Definitely makes peoples smile

TheatreTraveller · 10/02/2025 18:42

I don't think it's a recent thing...I'm 47 and remember my mam putting special chocolate lollies or treats in my lunchbox (heart shaped for Valentines Day, spooky for Halloween etc etc)

I've got loads of heart decorations, balloons, and will be doing a special meal for me, DH, DD4 and DS7. We've got them a card and a heart shaped mallow lolly each plus a token gift (lip gloss and pack of pokemon cards). My kids have got my mam a card and some heart shaped chocolates because my dad died at Christmas and they always celebrated.

How can anyone be negative about being nice to other people and making them feel loved (and yes - we're nice to each other all year round yada yada)

I think Valentine's Day is about making money.

PinkArt · 10/02/2025 18:43

St Valentine is the patron saint of beekeepers. Let's all celebrate the beekeepers on Friday, if you really want to get into the technicalities of his saint's day 🐝
It's been about love in all forms in our family since I was little. I asked my parents what it was, was told it was a day you send cards to people you love and so I took myself off and made them a card. It's carried on in that spirit for nearly 40 years now.

Snoopdoggydog123 · 10/02/2025 18:45

For Valentines day DH takes out DD's
And I take out DS. It's become a really nice tradition where we all get time.

We'll get the kids a little gift and all dress up.

They just know Valentines is about Love.

Well two thirds agree with me going by the vote so…..

So two thirds of MN are miserable and controlling. Shocker.

When I was younger, I swear valentine's day wasn't even about already established couples....it was about sending anonymous cards to those you fancied

It was exactly that x

Lavenderandbrown · 10/02/2025 19:00

Funny I just said to my DH…can we forgo valentines cards this year? Do we need to pay hallmark to say we love each other? With that tho…I decorate at work and give my young adult dc candy and a card. I have always gifted valentines and easter. It’s a mailbox surprise for them and to say…I love you everyday. My parents did this growing up and I loved it. My DH and I have been on 2 trips since Jan 1 and eat out often. We don’t need candy or anything else.

MissyB1 · 10/02/2025 19:06

I will get my ds a chocolate heart or heart shaped biscuit same as I do every year - he's 16 now!
