Not matching time left with REAL time?
Currently sitting and wondering how did I check at 25 past that it's 37min left and yet now at 11past it's still 2 min left?
Not the first time this happened. Quite a few times. I notice mainly because sometimes I check and plan to do something after.

Is Netflix time thing run by the same guys who did washing machines? 😂

Yabu - you are imagining it
Yanbu - you are not imagining it, or I am also losing grip on reality

I've not noticed it on Netflix, but my kindle definitely has a wonky opinion on time. It often tells me I have 30mins left, yet an hour of solid reading later I've still got 15 mins left.

Not sure if it's because I read a lot of ARCs or because my kindle is old. Or if kindles are just rubbish at telling the time.

The Kindle is different from Netflix, though, because your Kindle is constantly taking note of your reading speed as you go, and adjusting your ‘time left in book’ accordingly.

So it might tell you have an hour left to read, but then you’ll read a few pages more quickly or more slowly than expected, and it will adjust your time left to that speed.

Whereas Netflix presumably knows exactly how long each piece of content is when played at the correct speed before it’s uploaded, so it’s weird for the time watched/time left not to be consistent. It’s like the programme/film is changing speed while you watch.

Devilsmommy · 10/02/2025 00:37

Completely agree. I've noticed this. Always used to piss me off when the washing machine said 3 minutes left and I was still waiting 10 minutes later😒

I know the kindle adjusts reading speed, but it's so far out that it's not what's happening.

It's definitely weirder on NF though, as you say it should know how long a programme is!

dorathexplorer · 10/02/2025 00:40

YES!!! The washing machine thing 😂

Whatnowthenfordone · 10/02/2025 00:44

Is it because of the Netflix adverts?

Globusmedia · 10/02/2025 00:48

The kindle can waver massively, especially if you've just read all few pages really quickly - it overadjusts to a super speedy reading time and then puts it hours back as soon as you don't match it again.

I've not noticed it on netflix, sorry OP. I do often find their shows dragging though.

Mine doesn't put it hours back though, it will just say "15 mins left" for an hour.

Garlicworth · 10/02/2025 01:26

This does happen to me all the time ... It's because I pause it to wander off for a bit, or I google something from the show and then realise I was too busy reading to pay attention, so have to rewind some!

If you're sitting all the way through like a good little viewer, you've got a ghost in your machine 😂 The timer doesn't count adverts, but that's only five minutes or so.

YesItsMe44 · 10/02/2025 05:21

If you have Netflix with commercials/advertisements, they don'tinclude the commercial time in the time left. If there's 30 minutes left, it's 30 minutes of the program left. The commercials can add another 2+ minutes depending. Mind you my 9yo granddaughter explained this to me. 🙄

TheElvesLongSleeves · 10/02/2025 06:28

No adverts
I will time an episode with a timer on a phone today😂 It's honestly unbelievably bugging me now. Just finding myself sitting wondering wtf.
So tonight is crunch time to Netflix is doing some black mirror crap or I lost sense of real time 😂

My microwave seems like this too. I’ve never known two minutes to go by so slowly.

jellyfishperiwinkle · 10/02/2025 06:54

Waahing machines definitely change timings according to the load.

Yeah but that should be adapted at the beginning? So it weights, then pops 1:11. Then 1:35 it's still going😂

Netflix is always accurate for me.

Siouxtse1 · 10/02/2025 07:37

With washing machines though, many of them need the contents to be weight balanced before the machine can perform tasks such as vigorous spinning.

So if the weight of the clothing was evenly distributed just before your final spin, it will take the time indicated. Clothes get moved about a fair bit inside the drum though, and if they're not made of similar materials, they may absorb more or less water, making parts of the load heavier or lighter than others. The sensor in the machine recognised the weight isn't evenly spread and so the machine has to adjust the weight of the washing by performing extra actions to redistribute the weight evenly so that the final spin can be executed.

GRex · 10/02/2025 07:43

Netflix is mostly accurate, but a couple of times recently the show ended with over 7 minutes on the clock for credits. It may be correct that it has 7 minutes of credits, but I'm not going to watch to find out. I'm trying to remember which programme it was... maybe Culinary Class Wars?

But it then realises you haven't cleaned the system in years, so it's draining very very slowly and needs to adjust that. Varying Wasing timers is almost always because of drainage issues.
