To think it’s unprofessional for an employer to give me a work laptop without a case?

I started a new job this week and I was issued a work laptop, but it didn’t come with a case or sleeve for protection. AIBU to think that’s a bit improper or unprofessional? Surely, if they expect me to take care of it, they should provide something to keep it safe?

Have you asked for one? Lots of people don't use them these days.

HoskinsChoice · 08/02/2025 20:22

Seems a tiny bit of an OTT reaction. I have never had a laptop case in my life!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 08/02/2025 20:23

Maybe they assume that most, if not all people will have some sort of work bag/lap top bag/suitable backpack already, and it would be a waste of money providing them with another one, @BusyEagle?

FredaFox · 08/02/2025 20:23

Yes you are bring unreasonable 😂
I have been given them before and they were ugly and cumbersome which stopped them fitting in my bag
Most people I know don't bother with them just store in bags or rucksacks

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 08/02/2025 20:24

My work used to give laptop bags but no one ever used them and brought their own bag instead so I think they’ve stopped giving them as standard now. You can get one if you ask

RosesAndHellebores · 08/02/2025 20:24

Mine just goes into my rucksack but when I worried about it, I bought one for a tenner. Because, you know, they'd given me an expensive piece of kit and an i-phone, to facilitate me working from home two days a week.

I really have no words about the growing sense of entitlement.

Hoppinggreen · 08/02/2025 20:25

Bloody Hell, calm down

Sprig1 · 08/02/2025 20:25

Can you not just buy one and put it on expenses?

lnks · 08/02/2025 20:25

It's pretty standard

Housebuy1 · 08/02/2025 20:26

Have you asked?? Usually they have them or wait for someone to ask and then order it under the dept you are in for costing.

Madamecholetsbonnet · 08/02/2025 20:26

Is this a reverse?

Ponderingwindow · 08/02/2025 20:26

My work stopped issuing laptop cases about 20 years ago. None of us ever used the work provided cases. We all have our own preferred bags that also carry our personal items. It was a waste of money and bad for the environment.

professional people used to be expected to buy a briefcase to carry to work. This is no different. Get a bag with a laptop sleeve that is appropriate for your commute and whatever else you happen to need to carry with you.

there was a brief period of time when laptop bags were expensive. That is when employers provided them with computers. Now you can get one at any big box store.

Are you required to take it home, or is it just for use when at work? If just at work, can you just leave it there?

Ours used to give these really awkward laptop bags, no one used them, they just used there rucksacks, so was a bit of a waste.

Sorry for quoting original post

Icanttakethisanymore · 08/02/2025 20:28

Just ask for one or ask to expense one, Jesus, it’s not hard.

I8toys · 08/02/2025 20:29

Get a bag - open the bag - put the laptop in it.

ChangingHistory · 08/02/2025 20:29

We can order one if we want one but they dont give them as standard because most people don't want them and its just additional cost and environmental waste.

championsu · 08/02/2025 20:31

No, it's not unprofessional. Ask for one. They'll order it or ask you to expense.

Purplecatshopaholic · 08/02/2025 20:32

We don’t provide them any more. When I started I just used one I already had that fitted..

pimplebum · 08/02/2025 20:33

Yes unprofessional you should log a complaint in writing to your boss so there is a paper trail
make sure you Cc in all the management and union rep and mention it in the staff room a few times for good measure

… or you could pop along to flying tiger / tkmaxx / use a bit of bubble wrap ?

RickiRaccoon · 08/02/2025 20:35

Ask if they have any. My work sometimes issues sleeves, sometimes doesn't, depending which IT person gives it to you. I have one. Lots of my colleagues don't.

Don't worry about it too much. My colleague talks about how you can only take so much responsibility when they expect you to carry it to and from work each day in variable weather which I think is valid. A colleague dropped theirs and they just replaced it.

Peaceandquietandacuppa · 08/02/2025 20:37

Have you not asked for one? Lots of people don’t use one so they probably don’t issue them as standard. If you don’t have a suitable bag, ask if you can get one on expenses.

beencaughttrollin · 08/02/2025 20:37

Nope; it's totally normal and typical.
