I did something really stupid at an art class

It was life drawing, I'm not very good at it, especially producing 5 to 10 minute sketches.
The host gave me a sketch pad which had drawings in from previous weeks. At one point he said "Right everyone, let's put our drawings in a line on the floor here."
I panicked at the thought of anyone seeing my terrible drawing, so for some reason I pretended one of the previous weeks' ones was mine.
I didn't think he'd go through everyone's drawing one by one but he did. I tried to go go the toilet to escape having to discuss 'mine' but I didn't time it well.

It got to my drawing and he asked me how I'd produced it. I came up with some nonsense and he just smiled and said, well done. Left early as I felt embarrassed.

Can't believe I did that, don't know what I was thinking..anyone else done something daft like this?

The other drawings were highly skilled and detailed from clearly very experienced artists, mine was laughable.

No point being too precious - surely the whole reason for going to a class is to get better, and the tutor's advice will be part of that? Everyone there will have been a beginner at some point!
Maybe nobble the tutor after class and explain?

FionnulaTheCooler · 08/02/2025 16:24

Wouldn't it have been obvious that it wasn't the same model/pose?

bridgetreilly · 08/02/2025 16:24

Life drawing classes are always very mixed, because even professional artists use them to share the cost of hiring models. You have every right to be there.

SnoopySantaPaws · 08/02/2025 16:25

Ya, idiot 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Daft thing to do 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Do you have his phone number so you can text him?? Just explain that you did such a stupid thing because you were embarrassed by yours but you didn't intend to take credit for the much better drawing just not have yours ridiculed. If you can't text him, go early next week and explain yourself.

Meanwhile, thank you for the giggle!!

Cantwaitforaholiday33 · 08/02/2025 16:27

The model is a regular and he seems to be at most of them so the drawing looked like him., too embarrassed to go back to that one, I'll just be truthful next time !

You'll look back and laugh about it one day!
I know that feeling of abject humiliation - feeling that you're the absolute worst in an art class. It helped me to remember that the others in the class don't really give a shit how bad you are and they always found something positive to say!
I was a teaching assistant at the time and for the first time I understood that's how a lot of my students felt every day of their lives - didn't seem so important then.

Really? 🤔

Really? 🤔

Definitely not

Anonymous2003 · 08/02/2025 16:36

This is like something off miranda 🤣

chollysawcutt · 08/02/2025 16:38

Genuine question. Have you ever actually been to a life drawing class?

Cantwaitforaholiday33 · 08/02/2025 16:50

Not sure why people think I've made this up !
I've only been to a couple but I've been put off now tbh..
I used to go to a casual evening class where we drew our own subjects based on a particular theme. The teacher would go around the room giving everybody very specific compliments about shading, technique etc.
When she got to mine she'd say "Aww, that's cute!"...

I thought this was going to be worse, I thought you were going to say you drew a big juvenile cartoon Willy on someone’s painting or something.

I would either admit it to everyone next week and have a good old laugh about it. You can say ‘I’ve got a confession to make…’ It’s quite an endearing story really.

Or just never mention it again. But if you do that, won’t the same thing happen every week? Everyone’s will be good and yours a bit ropey?

GuestSpeakers · 08/02/2025 17:00

Someone I worked with misunderstood how much time they'd have and was dreading drawing the penis so decided to start with that. As you can guess, when they called time, that was all she'd finished. We had a great laugh about it at work but at the time she was mortified. She still went back.

ForeverPombear · 08/02/2025 17:02

The other people weren't always good or highly skilled, it takes practice. We all have to start somewhere so don't be too embarrassed.

IAmDefyingGravel · 08/02/2025 17:19

He likely already knew that wasn't your work having previously seen it at an earlier period, if he was the same host of course. It's done now, accept it's a little embarrassing and move on.

verityveritas · 08/02/2025 18:11

Why didn't you take your own sketch book? Wouldn't that be a pre-requisite of the class? Was the host the same as the teacher?
Isn't the idea of lessons to learn techniques and to have a useful critique of your work?
So many questions, but most importantly did you enjoy and will you go again?

This is like something off miranda 🤣

Yeah, and then walk out of the class with her skirt tucked in her drawers 😂

crankytoes · 08/02/2025 19:18

This is hilarious. Like something from Brigit Jones.

noctilucentcloud · 08/02/2025 19:43

I think try and forget about it. You obviously enjoy art and were interested in signing up for the class, so don't let your fear of what others might (or might not) think of you stop you going. The quick sketches at the beginning are to warm up, it doesn't matter if they're good or not, that's not their purpose. I've been to a few classes and there's always one or two people who are self conscious of what they've produced. There will be a wide range of skills at life drawing in particular - from people who've done degrees, to professional artists, to people who've done lots, to people who want to give it ago. I'd say try and see it differently, if you enjoy the process / class, what's it matter what the end drawing looks like? But if you're not enjoying it, then don't go back. I like art but not particularly life drawing, and some tutors are great, others less so.
