Boss told me off for exclaiming Jesus Christ

GloMum · 08/02/2025 14:55

The other day my boss told me off for exclaiming Jesus Christ when I was surprised during a work meeting. Boss told me it’s rude towards people from different religions and asked me if I’d done my DEI training. I have, and I enjoy friendships with colleagues from varied backgrounds. I feel really stressed now in case I slip again, and embarrassed I should be told off.

YABU - This is an inappropriate exclamation at work
YANBU - It’s just an exclamation and you shouldn’t be told off for that.

Imagine getting offended by blasphemy in this day and age 🤣

Does that apply to all religions or judt Christianity?

Whippetlovely · 08/02/2025 17:10

Drfosters · 08/02/2025 17:08

No why would it? Why would I police their opinion of my mum.

You're not a real Christian.

That’s a much more offensive statement than OP’s was.

Do the objecters to "Jesus Christ" also not like "Jeeze" or "Jeeze Louise" etc?

They're not really that different in reality - everybody knows what you're getting at.

Supposing somebody decided to start shouting or exclaiming your Mum's name as a negative expression when something negative happened - would it make much difference to you if they changed it to (e.g.) 'Moany Joany Perkins!' or 'Joan Perkins on a bike!' ?

Think of this this way, my mum no effect on your life, no influence at all.

But as an atheist, I happily celebrate the two months of birthday celebrations for Jesus, eat chocolate and hot cross buns at Easter. I had prayers in school, Nativity is still there. Bishops in the Lords. Head of the country is head of the CoE and on and on. Atheists are told we should be OK with this because we are 'culturally Christian'. OK so I should get to culturally use words associated with that religion? After all, they are part of my culture but not my religion, so I'm not blaspheming. No? Why?

Quite possibly…

MrsTerryPratchett · 08/02/2025 17:12

BTW the 'cultural Christianity' aspect is also why the false equivalency with Islam is stupid.

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 08/02/2025 17:14

It's not swearing, but it's that type of phrase not suitable for the workplace really. Not sure why, particularly as I don't believe. Probably just hear my granny telling me off for using the Lords name in vain. Gish, I miss those days.

SerendipityJane · 08/02/2025 17:14

Really the boss here isn't that bright.

The correct way forwards would have been to simply note that generally loud exclamations aren't encouraged. No matter what they are. That's my suggestion in an open shared office.

And a "loud exclamation" would be one that could be heard by persons uninvolved in the conversation. Especially if it's a conversation of one person.

That would avoid the need for a discussion about religion, language, culture, and history that would be well beyond the expectations of the company and a serious dent in the working day.

Boredlass · 08/02/2025 17:15

Ridiculous. I’d have rolled my eyes but I despise religion

Ilovetowander · 08/02/2025 17:15

It doesn't matter about who is is blaspheming surely. If you had used a jewish phrase that was blasphemous then it would be seen as being wrong so why is it different if it is a christian phrase.

Never ever bring logic anywhere near religion. They don't play nicely together and logic always loses out.

OneLilacGuide · 08/02/2025 17:16

Like many posters have said, an exclamation like that isn’t very suitable for a workplace meeting.

I wonder if your boss has been pulled up for something DEI related and is extra worried now.

DalzielOrNoDalzielAndDontPascoe · 08/02/2025 17:17

Of course, Jesus didn't exists in Old Testament times, so wasn't "the Lord" then, That's be rather backfilled.

Of course, you don't believe any of it at all, which you're perfectly entitled not to do; but the Bible does indeed clearly state that Jesus, as part of the Godhead, existed in Old Testament times - so that isn't quite the gotcha that you may have thought it would be to a Bible-believing Christian.

OK. So we are back to executing homosexuals then ?

I'm actually dyslexic, so now your being an arsehole! Lol

Jennifershuffles · 08/02/2025 17:19

Maybe say something like fuckado or cuntyplops next time

YourHappyJadeEagle · 08/02/2025 17:19

Always swear/ exclaim in a foreign language. I’ve done it for years so dgc are unaware.

Words · 08/02/2025 17:19

@SerendipityJane : D

I quite like Oh heck. ( and it is where the sausages come from too.). My Dad ( born 1915) never ever swore. He would say things like ' By Jupiter!' Or ' by the centre!'

'Oh my gosh' is just unfathomably prissy.

LynetteScavo · 08/02/2025 17:20

It's inappropriate at work, as would be "fucking hell".

I'm really surprised grown adults don't know this.

CrazyCatLady42 · 08/02/2025 17:22

Your boss is right.

You wouldn’t last long in my office! We need a swear jar! If you work in finance, you get used to bad language!

KimberleyClark · 08/02/2025 17:22

SerendipityJane · 08/02/2025 16:51

Personally I'd find it far more offensive how much evil has been done under that cross myself.

Do you hold Jesus Christ personally to blame for that evil? Do you think he advocated it?

LynetteScavo · 08/02/2025 17:22

Although I'm sure it depends where you work, and someone will come along and tell me it's perfectly acceptable to call their boss cunty chops to their face.

Wordsmithery · 08/02/2025 17:22

I have no religion and I use the f word with abandon in my private time. But I'm very cautious around language at work, whether blasphemy or swearing in general. It's unprofessional and could offend so best to avoid.
