Boss told me off for exclaiming Jesus Christ

The other day my boss told me off for exclaiming Jesus Christ when I was surprised during a work meeting. Boss told me it’s rude towards people from different religions and asked me if I’d done my DEI training. I have, and I enjoy friendships with colleagues from varied backgrounds. I feel really stressed now in case I slip again, and embarrassed I should be told off.

YABU - This is an inappropriate exclamation at work
YANBU - It’s just an exclamation and you shouldn’t be told off for that.

Boss is probably a Christian, but I think it's quite pathetic to be so sensitive.

90yomakeuproom · 08/02/2025 14:58

It is blasphemous and is offensive

GloMum · 08/02/2025 14:58

Boss is not Christian, I am.

Imagine getting offended by blasphemy in this day and age 🤣

FindusMakesPancakes · 08/02/2025 15:00

I work with a lot of conservative US based colleagues. An exclamation like that would make them deeply uncomfortable and I would probably be asked to consider how I was presenting myself if I did this in meetings.

All of us should have the self control to not exclaim loudly, blaspheme or swear in a work environment.

MudpiesinEssex · 08/02/2025 15:00

Why shouldn't you invoke your own deity?

Panicmode1 · 08/02/2025 15:00

I don't think it is very professional to use such an exclamation at work, and some Christians would take offence, yes.

(I am Christian and don't like it when my husband/children use it)

Pigsinblankets13 · 08/02/2025 15:02

Ridiculous - people are going to stop saying anything at all in the workplace soon for fear of offending...can't say anything these days!!

LittleRedRidingHoody · 08/02/2025 15:02

I just don't think it's professional. Same way you wouldn't go 'what the f**k' in a work meeting ~ it's going to be offensive to some people, the way swearing is.

Foxgloverr · 08/02/2025 15:03

It's weird how the rules are different for Christians vs other religions. You wouldn't be asking this if you'd shouted the Islamic God's name.

MudpiesinEssex · 08/02/2025 15:03

It's not even as if you shouted "Jesus fucking Christ and all the cunts of Hell!" is it?

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 08/02/2025 15:03

Imagine getting offended by blasphemy in this day and age 🤣

Well , there’s going to be a law about it soon ( but not for Christians, Hindus, Sikhs….)

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 08/02/2025 15:03

Get ready for more of this as Christianity becomes more openly talked about and part of our everyday lives, as well as influencing our way of lives

Pigsinblankets13 · 08/02/2025 15:04

Try 'Christ on a Bike' instead next time, but then you'll probably get told off for suggesting a bike was his preferred mode of transport

DutchCowgirl · 08/02/2025 15:04

I was raised in a Christian environment. And even though i don’t believe in any god anymore, i still don’t like it when people swear. It is just not a very professional reaction, it sounds aggressive and like you’re out of control. I wouldn’t like it if my colleagues would swear.

I’m a Christian and I find it pathetic to be this sensitive. People use it as a phrase when they are shocked or whatever, I do it too.

it would be different if you were screaming I hate allah or something

Locutus2000 · 08/02/2025 15:05

Another DEI bashing thread. How anyone looks at the US and thinks 'that's the way' is beyond me.

DEI is about the LGB as well as the T. It's a slippery fucking slope.

Row23 · 08/02/2025 15:05

I don’t think it deserved being told off, maybe just a gentle reminder that some people may find it offensive. Your boss was probably just trying to cover themself in making sure their staff are following general guidelines re religion etc etc.
Wouldn’t worry too much about it unless your boss came to you to say that someone had actually been offended.
I think it’s perhaps slightly unprofessional to make an exclamation in a meeting maybe. But I wouldn’t be shocked or offended I was in a meeting with someone who swore out loud or whatever.

Pollyanna87 · 08/02/2025 15:05

Blasphemous language is the most offensive language you can use around colleagues.

warmheartcoldfeet · 08/02/2025 15:06

It's really hard when certain phrases are so ingrained.

Good lord
Oh lordy
Good god
Oh my god

My mum used to say 'Jesus H Christ' when something like the wind slammed a door shut.

I do try to say 'cheesus' now and pretend it was a cheese reference.

mamakoukla · 08/02/2025 15:06

Like swearing, blasphemy doesn’t belong in professional or workplace settings. Personally, you can swear at me all day long but I will very politely ask you to stop if you’re blaspheming. I find it more offensive (appreciate this is my personal viewpoint)

HipMax · 08/02/2025 15:06

90yomakeuproom · 08/02/2025 14:58

It is blasphemous and is offensive

To you, perhaps. Not objectively.

Collette78 · 08/02/2025 15:06

I don't think it’s professional or appropriate.
I wouldn’t expect anyone I work with to exclaim in that manner or use swearing etc either if they are working in a professional environment.

fluffiphlox · 08/02/2025 15:06

I am not a believer I do think that it’s inappropriate for the workplace, as is swearing generally. (I swear but not in a work context).

FoxtonFoxton · 08/02/2025 15:06

I had that once and immediately followed with oh god, I'm so sorry. Wasn't my finest hour. I was so embarrassed that I didn't make the mistake again -you'll probably find you are the same.
You didn't intend to offend anyone, you presumably apologised, so forget it and move on.
