Airbnb host letting herself in

AIBU to be a bit angry our host has just let herself in. Basically, we’re on an extended holiday for two weeks and staying at an AirBNB. The host is very kind just to put it out there very friendly.

I have 2 young kids. As much as I clean I am never as efficient as my toddler is at making a mess. For everything item I put away she will bring out 5 more. That’s kids for you so I don’t mind. My youngest is starting to get that way as well, his very messy. Needless to say, I am a bit subconscious anyone entering my house while it’s messy as it reflects badly if you don’t have young ones yourself. I also am a bit of a clean freak ( I stay awake to 2 am sometimes cleaning as I don’t like my home being a mess but it always ends up one anyways.)

Anyways, we just had a grocery shop for the week as well plus have clothes lying around from travelling so the whole place is chaotic. The host keeps asking when is a suitable time for her to come in and mop our floors and we keep saying well let her know because we’re trying to unpack.

I understand it’s her home, we’ll never leave it in a state and it’s definitely not as bad as I’m making out but I kind of expect privacy when I book an AirBnB. I was absolutely horrified to see she had been in anyways and mopped said floors. It’s very kind of her don’t get me wrong but AIBU to think that if you are an AirBNB host you shouldn’t just let yourself in when you have guests?

What did the listing say? Did it say daily cleaning or something? And do you have a do not disturb option?

All you can do is speak to her, or complain through Airbnb

Why is she mopping floors during your visit? Were they not done before you arrived?

Unless I’d prearranged it, I wouldn’t expect host to come into the property at all while I was staying there. YANBU.

Normally for a stay that length you'd have a cleaner pop in wouldn't you? I've had that and not even been told it was happening - I think she was trying to be kind figuring out when it worked for you, and then saw an opportunity and took it!

Nope. I think she was doing it as a friendly gesture but it rubbed me wrong.

More so in hotels. I guess Airbnb is a bit different as I’ve stayed places for a month and have never had a cleaner.

Is she wanted to mop the floors, did she have cleaning as part of the letting? I wouldn't get upset at this, it's no different to a cleanr going into your room.anywhere else.

tygertygers · 08/02/2025 11:40

An Airbnb is very different to a hotel! And even at a hotel you have the option to decline cleaning. This is not normal and really intrusive. Tell her thanks for mopping but you'd like your privacy now.

Why did you not tell her you didn't want her to mop the floors and you'd do it yourself if needed?
