To use my second language to gain an advantage in the Lidl queue?

I live in a town on the Welsh border. So much on the border that parts of my town are actually in England, but the Lidl is in Wales.

It's not a Welsh speaking area at all. Welsh is taught in schools but you don't hear it being spoken out and about - I honestly can't remember the last time I heard anyone speaking Welsh outside an educational setting.

But because it's in Wales, Lidl do all their store announcements in Welsh first, including the announcement that another till is opening and the number of the till.

I speak enough Welsh to know which till is about to open before it's announced in English so I just zoom straight over there when I hear it in Welsh. This gets me dirty looks from people who were ahead of me in one of the queues, but didn't twig which till was opening until it was announced in English. Lidl tends to have mega queues so getting in first at a newly opened till is a major win round here 😁

AIBU to take no notice and carry on being first at Till 5? Or should I wait until everyone has understood what's going on, or should I even give the people ahead of me a heads up?

We do this in Scotland with the ferries when the announcements are in Gaelic first (native speaker). Very handy during the busy summer months!

MaloryJones · 07/02/2025 23:53

YANBU

ACynicalDad · 07/02/2025 23:56

I spy bullshit, the numbers are so similar I expect a lot of people know them at least.

I also do the same! I also live very near the Wales/England border but originally from West Wales. I wonder if you live near me!

BeardieWeirdie · 07/02/2025 23:58

Chwarae teg! I’d do the same but my local is in Gwynedd so it doesn’t give as much of an advantage here. I’ve had free ketchup when ordering in Welsh in the chip shop before - find those perks where you can!

Scorchio84 · 07/02/2025 23:59

Absolutely go for it! Anyway queing at one till doesn't automatically give you the right to the same order in a different one fgs...

S0upertrooper · 08/02/2025 00:00

Does your Lidl ever make announcements in Welsh about microwaves in the middle isle?

I love the Welsh word for meecro wavay!

Starlightstarbright4 · 08/02/2025 00:01

yanbu … however I Shop at Aldi and often notice that if you jump on a till just opening you end up waiting on staff

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 08/02/2025 00:05

No you definitely crack on!

As others have said they could just learn the numbers in Welsh 😂

I use it as an affectionate name for the kids sometimes 😂

(I don’t think it’s the official word for microwave though?)

If they live in the English part then I don't see why they need to learn Welsh.

well they don't need to, do they?
Did you read a different OP to everyone else, in which the announcement isn't repeated in english at all and non-welsh speakers just stand around bewildered with no idea where to go?

OP, yn fy marn i, mae'n chwarae teg.
I'm just surprised they are so strict with it even in a not particularly welsh area, I was in Lidl in Cardiff today and don't remember them doing the announcements bilingually, although tbh I might have just not noticed.

It's also useful on train platforms

Stravaig · 08/02/2025 00:12

You're not using your second language to gain an unfair advantage; rather, taking the time and trouble to speak two, three, four languages gives the speaker manifold advantages, throughout life. Something English leid monoglots really ought to learn. Especially when they're living (or simply shopping) in another country. Bleeps.

what, popty-ping?
nah, the 'real' word is microdon
Popty is oven, so it's just a bit of a silly term. I don't actually know anyone that calls it a popty-ping, but it would be understood if you used it in context. I suppose a bit like someone calling the tv remote the 'buzzer' or the 'zipper' or whatever.

Of course the other benefit is how trustworthy the Welsh accent is 😉

S0upertrooper · 08/02/2025 00:24

@latetothefisting I'm not being funny like, but i was sure poppity-ping was proper Wesh. Gutted I am!

Moveoverdarlin · 08/02/2025 00:25

I’d do a little dance and give the other shoppers a little wave as you make your way to the opening checkout.

dothedanceofjoy · 08/02/2025 00:28

Language is a red herring, as it can only be a matter of seconds. But it's not in the spirit of the queue to sprint over ahead of queuers who've been waiting longer 😉. But there's always one, and they always look as if they think they've done something really clever, so crack on, I guess, if that's what makes you happy.

LOL. It’s Lidl, not the Equestrian event at Ambridge hall. Spirit of the queue is most likely the vodka in the middle aisle
Crack the fuck on and jump the queue using any advantage you’ve got

Clingfilm · 07/02/2025 23:16

Da iawn ti. Go for it. Same principle applies at Cardiff Central when they're announcing platforms 😀

For some time in Machynlleth they had the platform numbers (there are only two!) the wrong way round in the Welsh announcements. No one seemed to care; presumably because everyone knew which which was the up line and which the down.

Berlinlover · 08/02/2025 00:48

I wish Lidl made announcements in Irish here in Ireland.

CheekyPombear · 08/02/2025 00:54

Frozenalchemist · 07/02/2025 22:55

I wish I understood Welsh

Me too. But I do find using German is way more effective.

HeddaGarbled · 08/02/2025 01:04

The rule is that the first person in the queue adjacent to the newly opened till who hasn’t already put their shopping on the belt goes first unless they choose to stay where they are. Then it’s the next person back and so on, with some moving over and some staying put so that there are two equal length queues. Anyone at the back of the queue who nips in front is a CF, regardless of language, announcements or any other factor.

NattyTurtle59 · 08/02/2025 01:46

Go for it. It's not your problem that the others don't understand.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 08/02/2025 03:04

Common courtesy, but times have changed and less people follow social norms. The clerk has to invite people over in order otherwise it's a free for all unless confronted, I think.

curtaintwitcher78 · 08/02/2025 04:27

JudgeBread · 07/02/2025 22:26

Let's ruin it for OP by all learning our numbers today so we can beat her. After me everyone.

Un (een)
Dau (die)
Tri (tree)
Pedwar (Ped-waar)
Pump (pimp)
Chwech (good luck)

That'll do, no Aldi has more than six right? Listen out for them and get to the front, go go go!

Edited

I only know pedwar because of S4C 🤣
You could get episodes of Brookside a day before England on S4C when I was a kid.
